1 Instructions D Memory Modules (For 6180 Industrial Computers with Pentium and Pentium II Processors) This document describes how to add Memory to the 6180 Computer processor board. Topics include: Available memory Guidelines for adding/removing memory modules How to add/remove memory modules to processor board Available Memory The 6180 Computer processor board has four 72 pin sockets supporting: 8 to 128 Megabytes (MB) of for Pentium processor boards 8 to 256 Megabytes (MB) of for Pentium II processor boards These sockets support the following single or double sided Standard In Line Memory Modules (SIMMs): Pentium (Use gold-plated SIMMs) Memory Module Catalog No. (SIMM) 4 MegaBytes EDO 8 MegaBytes EDO 16 MegaBytes EDO 32 MegaBytes EDO / Non Access Time SIMM4 SIMM8 SIMM16 SIMM32 Pentium II (Use tin-plated SIMMs) Memory Module (SIMM) Catalog No. / Non Access Time 32 MegaBytes EDO SIMM32T 64 MegaBytes EDO SIMM64T

2 D Memory Modules 2 The minimum memory size is 8MB (two 4MB SIMMs) for both boards. The maximum memory size is 256MB (four 64MB SIMMs) for Pentium II boards and 128MB (four 32MB SIMMs) for Pentium boards. Four SIMM sockets are arranged in two banks of two sockets. Processor Boards Bank 0 Bank 1 Bank 0 Bank 1 Pentium II Pentium Both parity and non parity SIMMs are supported. If exclusively parity SIMMs are installed in the system, the user can configure one of several memory error- modes within the CMOS setup utility. The options are Disabled (BIOS default),, and ECC. These modes are described in the table below. Setup Utility Mode Option Non-parity SIMMs SIMMs Disabled ECC No error No error N/A Single-bit error N/A Single-bit error correction Double-bit error NOTE: If any non parity SIMMs are added, system parity is disabled for all banks (even if one bank contains parity SIMMs). Guidelines for Adding/Removing Mem When adding memory to the 6180 Computer processor board, follow these guidelines:

3 D Memory Modules 3 Each bank must contain SIMMs of the same type (EDO parity or EDO non-parity), speed, and size. For example, you cannot install 8MB and 16MB in Bank 0. SIMMs must be installed in both sockets of a bank (Bank 0 only, Bank 1 only, or both banks). BIOS automatically detects memory size, type and parity. There are no jumper settings. Use only tin lead SIMMs on Pentium II boards and gold plated lead SIMMs on Pentium boards. Use 72 pin, 50ns or Extended Data Out (EDO) D.

4 D Memory Modules 4 Adding/Removing Memory Modules This section gives instructions on how to add memory modules to or remove memory modules from the 6180 Computer processor board. Internal 6180 Computer components may be damaged by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). Make sure you wear a grounding strap whenever handling circuit boards, memory modules or other internal components. ATTENTION: Wear a wrist strap (well grounded) and perform work in a static safe environment. Electrostatic discharge can damage the 6180 Computer and components. Also observe the following precautions: Always handle the memory cards by the ends not by the memory module contacts. Store memory in an anti static bag when it is not installed. Never install or remove memory with the power turned on. To add or remove memory: 1. Disconnect power from the 6180 Computer. ATTENTION: Disconnect all power from the 6180 Computer before adding/removing components. Failure to disconnect power could result in severe electrical shock or damage to the 6180 Computer. 2. Remove the back panel of the 6180 Computer. Refer to procedures in the 6180 Computer Industrial Computer User Manual for details on how to remove the back panel. 3. Remove the 5 screws securing the power supply (see illustration, next page). Carefully remove the power supply while noting how the cabling is dressed in the unit. Also note that air diverting flap(s) are attached to the power supply. Observe the position of the air diverting flap(s) for later re installation. Be careful not to damage them. Because of the limited length of the main supply cable harness to the motherboard, the power supply can be moved only to the point that it just clears the edge of the chassis. NOTE: You do not have to disconnect the power supply wiring. Carefully position the power supply out of the way.

Position the SIMM at about a 45 angle relative to the processor board. Make sure the small notch in the middle of the bottom edge of the SIMM aligns with the notch in the SIMM socket. 6. Insert the bottom edge of the SIMM into the SIMM socket and make sure it is firmly seated. 7. Push down on the ends towards the retaining clips until the SIMM snaps into place. 8. To remove memory, gently press down on the retaining clips, so that the SIMM can be removed. 9. After the SIMMs are installed, return the power supply to its mounting position in the chassis. Dress the cables to their original position and ensure that the air diverting flap(s) are installed near the processor heat sink, as originally positioned. 10. Secure the power supply and install back panel.
