We can work with you to create a long term plan to build the lab you need while respecting your budget and timelines. Your lab starts with the Rotary Servo Base Unit (SRV02) that helps teach control fundamentals to students in virtually every engineering discipline, including electrical, computer, mechanical, aerospace, civil, robotics and mechatronics. A Solution for Every Lab. Whether you re trying to enhance an existing lab on a small budget, building a new program within a somewhat larger budget, or sharing a larger controls lab with other engineering departments, you can now create a high-functioning Rotary Servo Control Lab that satisfies your control teaching needs. You can teach classic control concepts or create multi-servo experiments. Nine experimental modules can be added on to the Rotary Servo Base Units. So your control lab can consist of up to 10 different workstations, each featuring a different module to help students learn introductory, intermediate and advanced control concepts. Modular and Budget-friendly. With its different modules, the Rotary Servo Control Lab allows students to be exposed to different types of servo-based systems, each with their own types of sensors, system dynamics and control challenges. For example, the Flexible Link module includes a strain gage sensor to measure the deflection of the beam. You can also combine two Servo Base Units together with the 2 DOF Robot module to teach fundamental robotics concepts such as kinematics. All of the workstation components are also modular. Amplifiers, software and data acquisition devices are both flexible and interchangeable. Add-on modules work with the Servo Base Unit and all other components seamlessly. Perhaps best of all, the modular design allows you to build a lab incrementally, making the Rotary Servo Control Lab as budget-friendly as it is complete. SERVO BASE UNIT (SRV02) The Rotary Servo Base Unit (SRV02) is the fundamental unit for Quanser Rotary Control experiments. It is ideally suited to introduce basic control concepts and theories on an easy-to-use and intuitive platform. Use it on its own to perform several experiments, or expand the scope of this unit by adding on other modules to teach an even wider range of experiments. Instructors can thus expose students to a variety of rotary control challenges for a minimal investment. Real-world applications include the autofocus feature in modern cameras, cruise control in automobiles, and speed control in CD players. Courseware for the Rotary Servo Base Unit covers three main labs: Modelling, Position Control, and Speed control. For each of these topics, the workbooks guide students through rigorous background derivations, provide some pre-lab questions and take the students through the in-lab exercises with the hardware. Students will compare their theoretically modelled results to those of the real device. This marriage of theoretical and practical controls will give your students an understanding of the controls concepts you are teaching that is not possible with standard approaches. HOW IT WORKS The Servo Base Unit is a geared servo-mechanism system. The plant consists of a DC motor in a solid aluminum frame. This DC motor drives the smaller pinion gear through an internal gear box. The pinion gear is fixed to a larger middle gear that rotates on the load shaft. The position of the load shaft can be measured using a high resolution encoder. NI Part No. 782502-01 Quanser s turn-key solution allowed us to get started very quickly. And now I want to add on different modules. Dr. Kelly Cohen, Associate Professor, Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, University of Cincinnati, USA The Rotary Servo Base Unit experiment acquaints students with the concept of rotary displacement control, which is integral to such high-precision applications as a CD-ROM drive. The Servo Base Unit is equipped with an optical encoder and a potentiometer to measure the output shaft position, and a tachometer to measure the speed of the motor. 6 WWW.CLOSEDLOOPCONTROLSDEMO.COM

INVERTED PENDULUM WORKSTATION The Rotary Inverted Pendulum module offers the student a hands-on opportunity to grasp the classic pendulum problem learning to balance a vertical rod by rotating or changing the angle at the base. When combined with the Rotary Servo Base Unit (SRV02), the Inverted Pendulum experiment exposes students to two different control challenges: Inverted Pendulum (i.e., the Furuta Pendulum) and Self-erecting Inverted Pendulum. Students will use this module to learn practical problemsolving skills for mechanical and aerospace engineering while designing a controller that swings the pendulum up and maintains it in the upright position. A classic application is the two-wheeled Segway self-balancing electric vehicle. A widely used teaching tool, the Inverted Pendulum experiment is extremely versatile and offers you an excellent opportunity to stretch your budget. HOW IT WORKS The Rotary Inverted Pendulum consists of a flat arm with a pivot at one end and a metal shaft on the other end. The pivot-end is mounted on top of the Rotary Servo Base Unit load gear shaft. The pendulum link is fastened onto the metal shaft and the shaft is instrumented with a high resolution encoder to measure its angle. The result is a horizontally rotating arm with a pendulum at the end. NI Part No. 782499-01 The dynamics of the Segway self-balancing electric vehicle are similar to the classic control problem of the inverted pendulum. We decided to go with Quanser because Quanser equipment was modular and flexible. You can add different modules to each Servo Base Unit (SRV02) and create new experiments out of it. FLEXIBLE LINK WORKSTATION The Rotary Flexible Link module is designed to help students perform flexible link control experiments. The module is designed to be mounted on the Rotary Servo Base Unit (SRV02). This is an ideal experiment intended to model a flexible link on a robot or spacecraft. This experiment is also useful in the study of vibration analysis and resonance. You can use it to mimic real-life control problems encountered in large, lightweight structures that exhibit flexibilities and require feedback control for improved performance. HOW IT WORKS The Flexible Link consists of a strain gage which is held at the clamped end of a thin stainless steel flexible link. The DC motor on the Rotary Servo Base Unit is used to rotate the flexible link from one end in the horizontal plane. The motor end of the link is instrumented with a strain gage that can detect the deflection of the tip. The strain gage outputs an analog signal proportional to the deflection of the link. NI Part No. 782486-01 Quanser equipment gives students good insight into real control. Dr. Ben Cazzolato, Associate Professor, School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Adelaide, Australia The Rotary Flexible Link experiment will introduce students to such real world challenges as the flexibility in the Canadarm Shuttle Remote Manipulator System. In this experiment, students learn to find the stiffness experimentally and use Lagrange to develop the system model. This is then used to develop a feedback control using the linear-quadratic regulator, where the tip of a beam tracks a desired command while minimizing link deflection. 10 WWW.CLOSEDLOOPCONTROLSDEMO.COM

FLEXIBLE JOINT WORKSTATION The Rotary Flexible Joint module is ideal for modeling a flexible joint on a robot when mounted on the Rotary Servo Base Unit (SRV02). It is also useful in the study of vibration analysis and resonance. This experiment uses a sensor to measure joint deflection, to address the control problems encountered in large, geared robot joints where flexibility is exhibited in the gearbox. Students will learn how to model the system using state-space and design a feedback controller with pole-placement. HOW IT WORKS NI Part No. 782498-01 The Flexible Joint module consists of a free arm attached to two identical springs. The springs are mounted to an aluminum chassis which is fastened to the Rotary Servo Base Unit load gear. The module attaches to a DC motor on the Servo Base Unit that rotates a beam mounted on a flexible joint. The Flexible Joint module is supplied with three distinct pairs of springs, each with varying stiffness. It comes with three base and three arm anchors for the springs, and allows to obtain a wide variety of joint stiffness. The module is also supplied with a variable arm load that can be mounted at three distinct anchor positions to change the length of the load. Hands-on experiments seem to be particularly effective for teaching basic concepts in dynamics and control. The experiments show the students how theory and real world are interconnected. Dr. Shirley Dyke, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering, School of Civil Engineering Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA With the Rotary Flexible Joint experiment, students will learn to solve realworld control problems encountered in large-geared robot joints found in some industrial robotic equipment. 12 WWW.CLOSEDLOOPCONTROLSDEMO.COM

BALL AND BEAM WORKSTATION The Rotary Ball and Beam module experiment represents unstable systems similar to exothermic chemical processes that have to be stabilized to avoid overheating. Students will learn how to break down a problem and design a cascade control to stabilize the ball. When mounted on the Rotary Servo Base Unit (SRV02), this experiment effectively demonstrates a real-life application of PD Control and how it relates to stabilizing a ball on a track. It s useful in teaching basic control principles related to real-life challenges such as aircraft roll control. HOW IT WORKS The Ball and Beam module consists of a steel rod in parallel with a nickel-chromium, wire-wound resistor forming the track on which the metal ball is free to roll. The track is effectively a potentiometer, outputting a voltage that s proportional to the position of the ball. Thanks to the open-architecture design of Quanser equipment, we ve customized experiments, and added new ones. Quanser s open architecture is a great plus for us. Dr. Stephen Williams, Associate Professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, Milwaukee School of Engineering, USA NI Part No. 782482-01 Aircraft roll control is a key real-world application of the Rotary Ball and Beam experiment. When coupled to the Rotary Servo Base Unit, the tilt angle of the beam can be controlled by changing the servo gear angle. The Ball and Beam module can be operated in standalone mode, and the ball position can be controlled via the user interface. The Ball and Beam module can also be paired with an additional Remote Sensor module, in which case the system operates in a Master/Slave mode where the ball on the beam will follow the reference ball position of the second Ball and Beam module. 14 WWW.CLOSEDLOOPCONTROLSDEMO.COM

DOUBLE INVERTED PENDULUM WORKSTATION Based on the Two Degrees of Freedom (2 DOF) Robot workstation, the Rotary Double Inverted Pendulum module offers the student a simple way to understand the advanced pendulum problem. The student will learn to balance two vertical rods by manipulating the angle of the base. When the Double Inverted Pendulum is mounted on the Rotary Servo Base Unit (SRV02), this experiment takes the classic single inverted pendulum problem to the next level of complexity. Students will use this module to learn practical problem-solving skills for mechanical and aerospace engineering while designing a controller that maintains the pendulum in an upright position. Related applications include stabilizing the takeoff of a multistage rocket, as well as modeling the human posture system. HOW IT WORKS The experiment has two main components: the Rotary Servo Base Unit and the Rotary Double Pendulum. The Double Pendulum is composed of a rotary arm that attaches to the Rotary Servo Base Unit, a short 7-inch bottom blue rod, an encoder hinge, and the top 12-inch blue rod. The balance control computes a voltage based on the angle measurements from the encoders. This control voltage signal is amplified and applied to the Servo motor. The rotary arm moves accordingly to balance the two links and the process repeats itself. NI Part No. 782485-01 The Rotary Double Inverted Pendulum experiment is useful for real-world modeling of the human posture system. The robust, modular design of Quanser s rotary control experiments offers a very good solution to the challenge of balancing costs and having a system that can endure heavy student usage. GYRO/STABLE PLATFORM WORKSTATION A gyroscope is a device for measuring or maintaining orientation (providing stability or maintaining a reference direction), based on principles of conservation of angular momentum. The Rotary Gyro/Stable Platform module provides an excellent opportunity to study gyroscopic properties along with control experiments that resemble real-life applications of the gyro. It represents an ideal way to teach rotational dynamics principles. On this module, a sensor measures the gyro deflection angle about a horizontal axis to prepare students for control navigation challenges such as those encountered in instruments mounted on ships. Students will also learn concepts for real-world satellite navigation as they design a feedback controller that measures the gyro deflection and maintains the line of sight of the gyro frame. Gyroscopes are used in a wide variety of systems that control and guide the heading in sea vessels, and the orientation of space satellites, aircraft and submarines. HOW IT WORKS The Gyro/Stable Platform experiment consists of the Rotary Servo Base Unit (SRV02) plus the gyroscope module. The gyroscope module itself consists of a rotating disk mounted inside a frame. It is actuated about its center through a DC motor. An internal frame holds the rotating disk and is attached to an external frame through two shafts at both ends. A gear mechanism is connected between one of these end shafts and an encoder measures the angle of the blue frame as it rotates about the shafts, i.e., it measures the disc tilt angle. The Rotary Servo Base Unit is mounted on a 2-plate structure. This structure consists of two plates mounted on top of each other that are free to rotate. This allows the gyroscope structure to be manually rotated relative to a fixed surface in order to simulate external disturbance to the gyroscope system. The robustness and solid construction of the Quanser products has been excellent, with experiments still functioning perfectly after eight years without problems. Dr. Victor Becerra, Lecturer, School of Systems Engineering, University of Reading, United Kingdom NI Part No. 782488-01 Space satellite orientation is one of many real-world control challenges your students can experience with the Gyro/Stable Platform workstation. When the gyroscope controller is running, the Rotary Servo Base Unit keeps its heading as you rotate the bottom plate without any direct position measurement of the base plate. 18 WWW.CLOSEDLOOPCONTROLSDEMO.COM

2 DOF ROBOT WORKSTATION The Two Degrees of Freedom (2 DOF) Robot module helps students learn the fundamentals of robotics. When mounted on two Rotary Servo Base Units (SRV02), you obtain a fourbar link pantograph robot. Students can learn real-world robotic concepts such forward and inverse kinematics, and end effector planar position control. NI Part No. 782476-01 The 2 DOF Robot is particularly suitable for teaching intermediate robotic principles. It can be expanded to allow teaching of the 2 DOF Inverted Pendulum experiment. Applications of the 2 DOF Robot typically are pick-and-place robots used in manufacturing lines, such as PCB printing. HOW IT WORKS The 2 DOF Robot is connected to two Rotary Servo Base Units, which are mounted at a fixed distance that control two powered arms coupled through two non-powered arms. The goal of the 2 DOF Robot experiment is to manipulate the X-Y position of a four-bar linkage end effector. The system is planar and has two actuated and three unactuated revolute joints. Two servo motors on the Rotary Servo Base Unit are mounted at a fixed distance control a 4-bar linkage system. Such a system is similar to the kinematic problems encountered in the control of other parallel mechanisms that have singularities. My students use Quanser modules as a rapid prototype to choose and analyze different control scenarios. They start doing experiments very quickly. Dr. Roxana Saint-Nom, Electrical Engineering Department Chair, CAERCEM Researcher, Buenos Aires Institute of Technology, Argentina A popular application of the 2 DOF Robot experiment is the pick-and-place robot used in manufacturing lines. 20 WWW.CLOSEDLOOPCONTROLSDEMO.COM

2 DOF INVERTED PENDULUM WORKSTATION The Two Degrees of Freedom (2 DOF) Inverted Pendulum module allows students to experience the challenge of balancing an inverted pendulum. The student can build on fundamental robotic principles to control a two-dimensional pendulum. When mounted on the Rotary Servo Base Unit (SRV02), this experiment is reconfigurable for two experiments: the 2 DOF Inverted Pendulum and the 2 DOF Gantry. Students will learn concepts for aerospace engineering applications, such as rocket stabilization, while designing a controller that maintains the pendulum upright using the two servo motors. Balancing the 2 DOF Inverted Pendulum resembles the stabilization of a rocket during take-off. HOW IT WORKS The module consists of an instrumented 2 DOF Joint to which a 12-inch rod is mounted and free to swing about two orthogonal axes. The output shaft of the two Rotary Servo Base Units are coupled through a four-bar linkage, i.e., 2 DOF Robot module, resulting in a planar manipulator robot. The 2 DOF Joint is attached to the end effector of the robot arms. The goal of the 2 DOF Inverted Pendulum workstation is to command the position of the 2 DOF Robot end effector to balance the 2 DOF Inverted Pendulum module. By measuring the deviations of the vertical pendulum, a controller can be used to rotate the servos such that the position of the end effector balances the pendulum. NI Part No. 782474-01 With the 2 DOF Inverted Pendulum experiment, your students will experience the challenge of stabilizing a rocket during takeoff. Students like Quanser experiments very much. They start with solving the problems in the Quanser course material, which is provided with every experiment, and then gradually move from simple to more complicated and more exciting problems. MULTI-DOF TORSION WORKSTATION With the Rotary Multi-DOF Torsion module, you can teach principles of robotics and mechanical engineering with multi-dimensional analysis. Students will learn about modeling a torsional system and how to control it by minimizing the amount of vibration. NI Part No. 782504-01 When the Multi-DOF Torsion on module is mounted to the Rotary Serbo Base Unit (SRV02), this experiment is designed to teach torsional dynamics and controls with expandable complexity. Its multi-dimensional capability makes it easy to go from 1 DOF to 2 DOF or more by simply adding Torsion modules in the series. Applications that include high-gear ratio harmonic drives and lightweight transmission shafts may have joint flexibilities and torsional compliance, all of which can be emulated with this system. Courseware material and controllers for the 1 DOF experiment is supplied; making it convenient and ready to use out of the box. Sample 2 DOF Torsion controllers are also supplied. HOW IT WORKS The Torsion Module is a rotary torsional system that consists of an instrumented bearing block, which is mounted in a cubic aluminum frame. A shaft is free to spin inside the bearing block and is measured using an encoder. The shaft can be fitted with either a torsional load or a flexible coupling. The modularity of Quanser equipment was very useful for us. We could build a sophisticated lab from scratch incrementally. Dr. YangQuan Chen, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Utah State University, USA The Multi-DOF Torsion experiment will help your students learn about the effect of flexible coupling between the actuator and the load in complex industrial processes. The assembly made of one Rotary Torsion module coupled to a Rotary Servo Base Unit constitutes a one Degree of Freedom (1 DOF) torsional system. The Rotary Servo Base Unit lies on its side so that its DC motor and output shaft are horizontal and able to rotate a flexible coupling attached to a rotational load. The torsional load consists of two inertial disc masses, which can be located at different anchor points along their support bar. Up to seven torsion modules can be coupled in cascade to allow for multi-dimensional control problems. 24 WWW.CLOSEDLOOPCONTROLSDEMO.COM

CASE STUDY: UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HOW A MODERN CONTROL LAB IMPROVES CLASSROOM TEACHING AND RECRUITMENT Dr. Stephen Mascaro of the University of Utah modestly considers himself a roboticist and a jack of all trades. An Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering department, he divides his time between teaching and research. One of his most intriguing research activities is his Fingernail Sensing Project, which seeks to unobtrusively measure human touch forces at the fingertips. This would enable more natural studies of human grasping, and ultimately enable human-robot interaction that has robots intuitively understanding and responding to human needs. Dr. Mascaro s passion for research is matched only by his passion for teaching. He currently teaches courses in robotics, mechatronics and control at both the undergraduate and graduate level. His focus on instruction is what brought him together with Quanser. Image Courtesy of Dr. Stephen Mascaro, University of Utah CHALLENGE: Giving Students Sufficient, Hands-On Experience Dr. Mascaro wanted the students in his Robotic Control course to gain hands-on experience controlling a real robot. But his lab had only one very large, unreliable 2 DOF robot for the students to work with. Scheduling time for the students to use that single robot was a problem a problem made worse whenever the robot broke down and required repairs. I really wanted a different teaching model. Rather than using one large, expensive and mechanically unreliable robot, we needed several smaller, affordable and reliable robots, says Dr. Mascaro. These additional robotic teaching tools could be useful for other courses, because my Robotic Control course is just one of many that we teach here. Since they did not have the time or resources to properly build their own robots, Dr. Mascaro s challenge was to find a versatile, reasonably-sized hardware set that would allow all of his students to get hands-on experience in controlling real robot arms. Of course it had to be done in a cost-effective way. Funding was another challenge. A prime funding source was their internal B.E.E.F. (Base Engineering Equipment Fund) grants, which exist to help any engineering faculty at the University of Utah beef up the equipment in their laboratory. Grant-awarding criteria included the ability to share the newlyacquired equipment with other courses, and the agreement of the partner company, Quanser in this case, to match at least 50% of the grant in some way perhaps as an in-kind contribution. SOLUTION: Modularity, Flexibility and Collaboration A Quanser Academic Solutions Specialist had previously made a presentation at the University of Utah. No one else had a product line quite like yours, says Dr. Mascaro. I especially liked the idea that you could buy some basic rotary servo modules - SRV02 Base Units - that could then be reconfigured and have various modular add-ons attached. By investing in several Rotary Servo Base Units, Professor Mascaro was able to create a 2 DOF serial Robot (pictured above) to give students sufficient hands-on experience in control systems and in robotics. A high degree of modularity is welcome, from both the instructors and administrators point of view. If we invested in versatile, high quality hardware, we could then use it for a number of different courses in control systems and in robotics. They would serve more students and allow instructors to vary levels of complexity for different courses. Equally welcome was the modules build quality; they were quite capable of standing up to active use by enthusiastic students. 26 WWW.CLOSEDLOOPCONTROLSDEMO.COM

RESULTS: Delivering Superior Instruction and Recruitment Dr. Mascaro is proud of what the robot control lab can offer his students. We now have a modern robotics lab that can provide students plenty of hands-on time with the robots so they can better turn control theory into practice. They ll be better prepared to tackle real-world applications and research in the future. A single 2 DOF robot is learning to move the endeffector in a fast triangular trajectory. By repeating the same trajectory over and over, the robot iteratively learns how to compensate for the nonlinear dynamics and gradually reduce the tracking error. I really liked the diversity of Quanser s rotary control modules and add-ons, but the one thing I didn t see at that time was a small, reconfigurable, two-degree-of-freedom serial robot. I saw dedicated as well as module-driven parallel robots among Quanser s products, but not serial robots. And that was something I wanted for my robot control class to demonstrate certain dynamic principles. Thinking outside the box, Dr. Mascaro suggested Quanser s in-kind contribution to fulfill the B.E.E.F. grant requirements could be a new product a serial robot formed out of rotary SRV02 base units. I noticed that Quanser already had some add-ons that allowed you to combine two SRV02s in parallel, so I thought why not combine them in series? Dr. Mascaro collaborated with Quanser s engineers to design a new 2 DOF serial robot. It was successfully implemented in his course for the first time in the Spring of 2011. The new robot is used in half a dozen different robotics and control courses and gives hundreds of University of Utah mechanical engineering students more and better hands-on experience in designing and implementing controllers. Some of the students went even further and added to the collaborative process: after working with the new serial robot in class, they suggested improvements and Quanser s engineers were very receptive to their feedback. The lab is also a powerful recruitment tool. When new students come in and we talk to them about the great Robotic Track available at University of Utah, they can easily see the full potential of the program. Our lab is now capable of giving students serious hands-on experience with robots and controllers, and that s a great recruitment advantage. Dr. Mascaro found his experience with Quanser to be extremely positive and valuable. Working with Quanser has proven to be a remarkably rewarding collaborative experience for us. Your engineers did a good job of listening to my ideas and finding more efficient ways of incorporating them. The collaboration has led to creative solutions in the recent past and could very well lead to additional co-operative and creative teaching solutions in the future. Our lab is now capable of giving students serious hands-on experience with the robots and controllers, and that s a great recruitment advantage. Dr. Stephen. A Mascaro Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Utah, USA Dr. Stephen A. Mascaro has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah since 2005. His original work on fingernail sensing was published in the IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation in 2001 and 2004, and in Haptics-e: The Electronic Journal of Haptics Research in 2006. His current research interests include robotics and control, system dynamics, human-machine interaction, haptics, and bio-inspired actuation.
