2012-2013 PACING GUIDE RATIONALE M/J COMPREHENSIVE SCIENCE 3 FCAT 2.0 Science was administered to students for the first time in the spring of 2012. The test and standards have been revised as big ideas that flow throughout all grade levels and build in rigor as students progress to higher grades. There are 18 big ideas that are organized into four Bodies of Knowledge (Nature of Science, Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science). The Nature of Science benchmarks are taught at the beginning of the year and integrated in all units and activities throughout the entire school year at every grade level. Lab safety and the use of scientific tools should be introduced at the beginning of the year and re-addressed continuously throughout the year. In middle school the FCAT 2.0 Science is only administered in 8 th grade. The NGSS benchmarks for science are considered fair game. This means that the benchmarks from previous grade levels can be tested, but they will not be tested in isolation. The Pacing Guide was developed by a team of middle grades science teachers using the Florida Science Standards, Test Item Specifications, 2011 & 2012 FCAT Content Focus Reports, and Pearson Interactive Science Textbooks as the primary resources. The intent was to provide 8 th grade teachers sufficient time to teach all of the 8 th grade FCAT 2.0 standards by January 18th, 2013 and provide a 7 week comprehensive review of all Annually Assessed Benchmarks and Fair Game before FCAT Testing Begins in April. RECOMMENDATIONS:
