BACHELOR OF BUSINESS Qualification code: OP7001 Levels: 5 7 QUALIFICATION As the business world becomes increasingly demanding and complex, a Bachelor of Business will give you a competitive advantage. The Bachelor of Business can be studied as a single or double major. Alternatively, you can study for a diploma or NZIM qualifi cation. GRADUATE PROFILE Graduates of the Bachelor of Business: have strong interpersonal communication and infl uencing skills understand a variety of business concepts, processes and procedures relevant to public and private organisations will be able to identify opportunities, solve problems and achieve business objectives by the use of suitable techniques with reference to ethical frameworks will be able to critically evaluate the international, cross-cultural, economic, social and legal environments within business functions will be able to anticipate, adapt to and promote changes important to a business have a more developed understanding of their major area of specialisation, including the ability to select and apply appropriate qualitative and quantitative techniques. BACHELOR OF BUSINESS WITH A SINGLE MAJOR To study for a Bachelor of Business with a single major you need to complete 18 courses, each worth 20 credits. This makes a total of 360 credits, of which: a maximum of 160 credits (8 courses) are at Level 5 a minimum of 80 credits (4 courses) are at Level 7. Single majors are: Accounting Human Resource Management Management Unspecifi ed. REQUIREMENTS 78101 FINANCE FOR MANAGERS If you are studying the human resource management or management major, we recommend you select 78101 Finance for Managers. If you are studying the unspecifi ed major, unless you intend to complete Level 6 and 7 accounting courses, we recommend you select 78101 Finance for Managers. 3

ACCOUNTING MAJOR Accountants are employed in public practice, industry, government and educational organisations. They may specialise in auditing, fi nancial accounting, management accounting, taxation, fi nancial management, insolvency, consultancy, or a mix of these specialisations. Our accounting major is accredited by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand for their Chartered Accountants (CA) college and Associated Chartered Accountants (ACA) college and by Certifi ed Practicing Accountants (CPA) Australia. Appendices 6 and 7 have more information on meeting Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and CPA requirements. Students may also be eligible for exemptions for subjects in the UK Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) qualifi cations and the Association of Certifi ed Chartered Accountants (ACCA) qualifi cations. HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT MAJOR The Human Resource Management major includes both theoretical and practical (applied) papers. These range from knowledge of legal responsibilities to interviewing skills, and from recruitment strategies to the effective management of change within an organisation. MANAGEMENT MAJOR Bachelor of Business graduates with a Management major will have a mix of theoretical and practical management knowledge and skills that will enable them to work as professional managers. BACHELOR OF BUSINESS WITH A DOUBLE MAJOR You can complete a double major in Accounting and Management. A degree qualifi cation with a double major is made up of 20 courses of 20 credits each (a total of 400 credits), of which: 140 credits (7 courses) are at Level 5 140 credits (7 courses) are at Level 6 120 credits (6 courses) are at Level 7. CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS Open Polytechnic certificates An Open Polytechnic certifi cate is made up of at least two courses and can be used as a stepping stone to a diploma or degree. OPEN POLYTECHNIC DIPLOMAS An Open Polytechnic diploma is the equivalent of one year s full-time study or can be completed in 2 3 years of part-time study. Diplomas can be used as stepping stones to Open Polytechnic degrees, and courses completed for one diploma may be credited towards another diploma. A diploma is made up of six courses. At least four of those courses must be at or above the level at which the diploma is rated. So for a Level 6 diploma, you must complete at least four courses at Level 6 or above. We suggest you plan your study so that, where applicable, the fi rst qualifi cation you gain is a diploma. Please note that some courses have prerequisites, so you might not be able to complete a diploma in two trimesters. Note: All certifi cate and diploma courses are 20 credits. You can study courses within the disciplines of accountancy, fi nance, management, business, marketing, and quality, including those specifi ed for chartered accountants or associate chartered accountants certifi cation. GENERAL INFORMATION Assessment We measure your progress and determine whether you have achieved the learning outcomes of your course through assessments such as essays, reports, projects, and examinations. There are two types of assessment: Formative assessment involves activities and feedback designed to improve learning. This is not used to decide your fi nal result. Summative assessment counts towards your fi nal result. Some courses also have a 3-hour fi nal examination. To be eligible to sit the fi nal examination you must fi nish all the summative in-course assessments by their due date. For some courses you will need to attend contact sessions or assessment workshops while other courses have voluntary contact sessions (depending upon demand). Check our website for details. To pass each course, you must: Submit all your summative in-course assessments by their due date. Score at least 40% in the fi nal examination (if the course has a fi nal examination). Receive a fi nal mark of at least 50% of the total possible marks for the course. Assessment varies for each course. Full details will be in the course information, which is sent to you when you enrol. EXAMINATIONS We have examination venues throughout New Zealand. You will be allocated a venue closest to your home address. Before you choose the courses that you want to enrol in, check that you can attend the examination, because examination times and dates cannot be changed. Examination dates and times are listed on our website. SITTING EXAMS OUTSIDE NEW ZEALAND If you are, or will be, living overseas at the time of the examination, you will need to arrange a suitable examination venue and an appropriate supervisor. We will contact you eight weeks before the examination to help you make these arrangements. Any costs relating to the overseas venue and supervision will be your responsibility, including the costs associated with your supervisor returning your completed examination paper to us by courier. Note: A fee may apply if you need to sit your examination overseas and did not pay the international handling fee at the time of enrolment. SPECIAL ASSISTANCE FOR EXAMINATIONS If you need special arrangements to enable you to sit an examination, we may be able to help. LOCATION CHARGE PER TRIMESTER Australia $50 South Pacific region $70 East Asia and North America $95 Europe $105 Rest of the world $120 CROSS CREDITS AND CREDIT TRANSFER If you have already passed some courses (either through us or another tertiary provider) that you think will exempt you from having to do some parts of a qualifi cation, you can apply for cross-credit or credit transfer. You will need to provide evidence that you have already met the learning outcomes of the course you want credit for. You can apply for cross-credit and credit transfer after you have enrolled. Cross-credits may be specifi ed or unspecifi ed. A specifi ed credit means the content, level and learning outcomes of the course or qualifi cation you have already completed closely matches one of our courses. An unspecifi ed credit is where you have an unrelated course or qualifi cation from another recognised tertiary institution and want to apply for unspecifi ed credit towards our qualifi cation. We will decide how many credits will be awarded, and at what level. Unspecifi ed credits may only be used to replace elective courses within a qualifi cation. The number of unspecifi ed credits will depend on the degree and major you are studying. Please contact us for advice. See the last page of this brochure for contact details. The most cross-credits allowed is up to two-thirds of a degree (12 20-credit courses), up to half of a diploma (3 20-credit courses), and one course per certifi cate. You cannot gain partial cross-credit for a course, and you cannot cross-credit to Level 7 courses. You may receive some informal advice about which courses might cross-credit. APPENDIX 1: COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS To study the Bachelor of Business degree at Open Polytechnic, you need to be able to do the following: send and receive emails access and contribute to the Online Campus discussion forums download documents research online submit your work to us online in the formats specifi ed in your course. Note: The software you use must allow you to save your work in these specifi ed formats. For some courses you may also need specialised software (e.g. MYOB, MS Access), a DVD drive and a printer. See individual course descriptions for details. Note: We use Microsoft software and the resources we provide for your study are in this format. If you need to buy software, you can buy it at a special academic price from most software retailers (generally about a third of the normal retail cost). You will need proof you have been accepted into a course. Your letter confi rming your enrolment will provide this. APPENDIX 2: DEFINITIONS Certificate: A qualifi cation of study made up of courses, with a minimum credit value of 40 credits. Programme leader: Responsible for the content maintenance of the courses and for teaching and supporting students. Degree qualification: A programme of study made up of courses, with a minimum credit value of 360 credits. Core course: A compulsory course within a qualifi cation. Degree course: A course of study that is worth 20 or 60 credits at Level 5, 6 or 7 of the NZQA Framework and is part of an Open Polytechnic degree qualifi cation. APPENDICES Double major: A degree qualifi cation consisting of 400 credits, and which constitutes two defi ned areas of specialisation. Elective course: A non-compulsory course. You choose from a list of elective courses to make up credits to fi nish your qualifi cation. In most degree programmes you choose these courses from any Open Polytechnic degree qualifi cation. You may also use degree-level courses from other recognised tertiary institutions, subject to cross-credit approval. Major course: A course that constitutes a defi ned area of specialisation within a specifi c degree qualifi cation. Single major: A degree qualifi cation consisting of 360 credits, and constituting a defi ned area of specialisation. Unspecified major: A single major available within the Bachelor of Business qualifi cation without a specifi c major. Diploma: A 120-credit qualifi cation that constitutes a defi ned area of specialisation. Lecturer: Teaches students, provides study support, advice and feedback and marks assessments. NZQA Framework: NZQA Level 5 is equivalent to a stage 1 university course at 100 Level. NZQA Level 6 is equivalent to a stage 2 university course at 200 Level. NZQA Level 7 is equivalent to a stage 3 university course at 300 Level. Prerequisite: A course that needs to be passed or a set of skills and knowledge that needs to be demonstrated before you can enrol in a course. Trimester: A period in which a 20-credit course is studied, including the examination cycle. Note that some courses are taught over periods longer than one trimester. 31
