Global Studies Summer School 2011 in Berlin from the 1 st to the 4 th of July, 2011 General Information We look very much forward to your participation in the EMGS summer school 2011 that will take place in Berlin. For the duration of the stay you will be staying in a youth hostel called Jugendherberge Berlin Am Wannsee, which is next to a nice lake (thus you should not forget to take your swimming suit with you!!!) The Youth hostel offers a variety of leisure and activity options (see below). The accommodation and facilities of the function rooms is simple and functional. Thus pleasee don t expect too much luxury. How to arrive at the venuee (Please note map 1) By train To Berlin Hauptbahnhof, the city train S 7 direction Potsdam until train station Bhf. Nikolassee, then about 8 minutes walk. By car Berliner Ring A10, exit Berlin-Zentrum, A115 until exit Spanische Allee, turn left Strandbad Wannsee. Kronprinzessinenweg left to Badeweg (about 300 m). Free parking for cars and buses are available. By plane Tegel Airport: Take bus 109 towards "S-U Zoologischer Garten " and get off at S Charlottenburg ". Then take the S-Bahn S 7 direction "Potsdam Hbf" to stop "S Nikolassee. Take the exit toward Wannsee beach, cross the pedestrian bridge and follow the path to Kronprinzessinnenweg, then turn left and after 200 m you reach Badeweg (about 8 min. walk). Schönefeld Airport: Take the S-Bahn S9 direction "S Spandau Bhf" to stop "S Westkreuz. Change here for the S-Bahn S7 direction "Potsdam Hbf" to stop "S Nikolassee. Take the exit toward Wannsee beach, cross the pedestrian bridge and follow the path to Kronprinzessinnenweg, then turn left and after 200m you reach Badeweg (about 8 min. walk). 1
Bus from Leipzig: A bus is arranged from Leipzig to Berlin. The bus will leave on Friday, July 1st at 1 pm (sharp!) in Goethestraße (opposite to Novotel) and will start in Berlin on July, 4th at 6 pm FROM Hannah-Arendt-Straße The ride will take approx. 2,5 hours. If you are interested to join the bus, please register until June 28th under: (next to the Holocaust-Memorial). http://www.doodle.com/zhsr6q6i2tydzcam#table by indicating your completee name, as well as ticking the appropriate boxes (July 1st for those who are interested to join the bus only for the trip to Berlin, July 4th for those only interested to join for trip from Berlin to Leipzig and both boxes for a return trip). For a one way trip 15 Euro and a return trip 30 Euro would be charged. The money will be collected in the bus! There will be a maximum of 37 seats available. Accommodation All rooms in the hostel are four-bedded and furnished with two bunk beds. Some rooms are equipped with shower and toilet. Should it not be the case, two rooms share one shower. The toilets are to be found on the corridor near the rooms. The reception is open 24 hours. On arrival the rooms are not available until 1 p.m. If you arrive earlier, luggage can be stored. It is also possible to use the washing machine and dryer of the hostel. Bed linen is provided by the hostel. Towels must be brought. Food and Drinks The following food and drinks will be offered for free during your stay in Berlin (for the timings please see the programme Summer school ). Buffet breakfast: breads and rolls, butter, margarine, two or three varieties of sweet spreads, coffee, tea, cocoa, milk, juice, cereals, flakes, two types of sausage and cheese, some fresh side dishes Lunch: hot main dish and water/lemonade Coffee break: coffee, tea, water and some cakes Dinner: hot dinner and water/lemonade BBQ Dinner (on July 1 st ): one piece of meat, one sausage, variety of salads, bread (for veggis: vegetarien sausage/ grilled vegetables) diverse and water/lemonade Please note that we will need to grill on our own thus your help will be much appreciated!!! We will be also responsible for cleaning up the place afterwards much attention should be paid to put the garbage in the appropriate container afterwards. Party (on July 2 nd ): A location close to the Youth hostel has been rented for an exclusive EMGS party. DJ Globalution, who some of you might remember from the Graduation Ceremony in Vienna will bring us hopefully into dance vibes All of you will receive one drink for free (a coupon will be distributedd beforehand), all furher drinks need to be covered by yourself. Cruise dinner (on July 3 rd ): A boat trip has been arranged for Sunday night exclusively for you! It will hopefully give you the chance to enjoy the last night of the summer school together with your fellows in a cosy atmosphere and at the same time to see some of Berlins major attractions during the cruise. During the trip you can enjoy a main dish and all of you will receive one drink for free (a coupon will be distributed beforehand). All further drinks need to be covered by yourself. 4
The Youth hostel has also a vending machine for soft drinks (0,5l bottle 1,50 Euro) and hot drinks or sweets. Starting with 4 pm also a bar will open, that offers also alcoholic drinks (beer 0,3l 1,50 Euro, wine 10 Euro/bottle).Nearr the train station Nikolassee there is a gas station and several smaller shopping opportunities. Free Time Activities Even though the tight schedule of the summer school does not offer much space for freetime activities, you might find a minute to use the community room with television, or the reading corner or to play some beachvolleyball, soccer, outdoor chess or kicker. In any case, do not forget to bring your swimming suit in order to efresh in Wannsee Lake!!!! WLAN Is arranged for July 2 nd and July 3 rd and will be accessible in the ground floor of the youth hostel. You will be provided with the password at the venue! 5
Excursion On Monday, 4 th of July, after check-out (at 9 am SHARP!!!), you will visit the Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas, so called Holocaust Memorial Berlin. You will get an introductionn to the memorial in English, then you will have some time to visit it on your own and afterwards there will be time to raise any questions occurred during the visit or just for a discussion. After the visit it is unfortunately time to say good bye but in case your return trip is arranged for the afternoon you might have still some time to explore the capital of Germany on your own. The information below will be hopefully helpful for it! For those joining the bus to Leipzig, please be back at 6 p.m (sharp!) at the Hannah- you can reach Arndt-Str. next to Holocaust Memorial Berlin - An Overview (Please note map 2) The Holocaust Memorial is located in the center of Berlin. From there by foot numerous attractions of the German capital. Of course you can also use public transportation like bus, metro and tram to reach more distant targets. Map 2 shows a section of the Berlin district "Mitte ", which is the heart of the historical Berlin. Some major attractions, museums and shops you will find where you are looking for the letters, which are explained in the legend of the map. The excerpt shown here covers an area of about 5 km, is so easily explorable by foot. Workshops: A) Workshop study places: Please do not forget to prepare the following questions for the workshops on the study places (for part 1): 1) What does the study programme look like (modules 1st and 2nd year, courses attended, scholars )? 2) What are the main methods and theories learned during your first year in the programme? 3) How would you define Global Studies from what you have learned so far at your first year s study place? 4) How would you define Globalization in general? 5) Study environment (institutional settings, faculties, research institutes, library )? 6) Social life and recommendations for new students 7) How does a normal study week look like (how many courses, self-study etc.)? As already informed this workshop consists of three sessions: 1)In the first part of this workshop you will be mixed up in five different groups with representatives of each study place in each group (besides LSE). Please check in the enclosed list to which group you do belong to. 2) In the second part only those students will come together who will study at the same university in their second year. Thus there will be again 5 different groups (London, Leipzig, Roskilde, Vienna and Wroclaw). During this second part you are requested to share and re-structurto prepare a plenary session. 3) In the final part you/your group is requested to present your second years studies the information received in the first part in order place on the basis of the information you have received from your fellows. 11
B) Workshop Master thesis: For the Master thesis workshop, please do not forget to prepare the following ques- tions for your PROPOSAL of your thesis: - Why did you choose this topic, what motivates you for this research work? - How does your topic fit in the research field of Global Studies? - How does this topic relates to the research interest at the university of your second year as expressed in the list of possible topics (not applicable for Vienna)? - Which (theoretical, practical, social) series of questions are the starting point of your work? - What is the concrete research question to which your work should provide a scien- tific answer? - Which method(s) are you planning to use? - What are important publications you will base your work on (name if possible some 3-6)? ----------------------------- Please note that you need to present the proposal orally only and that it is NOT re- point for the quested to prepare a Powerpoint presentation. Since it is just the starting Master thesis a presentationn of around 10 minutes will be sufficient. In order to easen the process of finding a topic for your thesis for you, London, Leipbe supervised at zig, Roskilde and Wroclaw have prepared a list of topics that can the respective study place. You are kindly advised to choose a topic that is to be found on the list. We are looking forward to spend some wonderful days with you in Berlin! 12
