Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 Issues Kofax has tested Ascent Capture 6.1 and Ascent Capture Internet Server 6.1 with Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, and reports the following issues. The default settings on the Windows firewall may interfere with certain Ascent Capture operations by blocking access to several ports required by either Ascent Capture or Ascent Capture Internet Server. Follow the appropriate instructions that pertain to your Ascent Capture operation. Note that Windows firewall is not enabled by default. For Ascent Capture Standalone, Ascent Capture Client, Remote Site Ascent Capture Client, or Ascent Capture Internet Server Remote Sites on a Standalone Workstation It is not necessary to add Windows firewall exceptions to the Ascent Capture standalone, Ascent Capture client, Remote Site Ascent Capture client, or Ascent Capture Internet Server installed on a standalone workstation. For Ascent Capture Server Installations The following instructions apply to the Ascent Capture Server installation at the central site or the remote site. To add firewall exceptions in the Windows firewall 1 From the Windows taskbar, select Start Run. 2 In the text box, enter Regedit and click OK. The Registry Editor dialog box will display. 3 If you have an Ascent Capture Server installation, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\AscentCapture\MSSQLServer\SuperSocketNetLib\Tcp\TcpPort 4 Make a note of the TCP port number for later use. Close the Registry Editor. 5 From the Windows Control Panel select Windows Firewall. The Windows Firewall dialog box will display. 6 From the Windows Firewall dialog box, select the Exceptions tab. 7 Click Add Port. The Add a Port dialog box will display. 8 Enter the following parameters for the TCP port 2424: Name: Ascent Capture Service Port Number: 2424 Note If desired, you can change the port name to another name that is meaningful to you. 9 Select the TCP option. 10 Click OK to add the port to your exceptions list and close the dialog box. 11 Enter the following parameters for the UDP port 1434: Name: Ascent Capture Database Port Number: 1434 Kofax Image Products, Inc 3

Note You can use any name that is meaningful to you. 12 Repeat this procedure for the dynamic TCP port that you located in the Registry Editor, and select the TCP option (suggested name is Ascent Capture Dynamic ). 13 Select the Exceptions tab. 14 Select the File and Printer Sharing check box and click OK. For Ascent Capture Internet Web Server It is only necessary to open a TCP port for each IP addresses used to access the Ascent Capture Internet Web server. Typically, the default TCP number for a Web server is 80. To open a port in the Windows firewall 1 From the Windows Control Panel select Windows Firewall. The Windows Firewall dialog box will display. 2 From the Windows Firewall dialog box, select the Exceptions tab. 3 Click Add Port. The Windows Firewall dialog box will display. 2 From the Windows Firewall dialog box, select the Exceptions tab. 3 Click Add Port. The Add a Port dialog box will display. 4 From the Add a Port dialog box, enter the following parameters for the TCP port 2424: Name: Ascent Capture Service Port Number: 2424 Note If desired, you can change the port name to another name that is meaningful to you. 5 Select TCP and then click OK. For Microsoft SQL Server For specific Windows Firewall exceptions for the Microsoft SQL Server, refer to the Microsoft Web site. Windows XP Service Pack 2 Issues Kofax has tested Ascent Capture 6.1 and Ascent Capture Internet Server 6.1 with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2, and reports the following issues. There are no other known issues at this time. Online Help In Service Pack 2, security for Internet Explorer (the SP2 updated version) has been enhanced so that users are warned when the browser attempts to open local files with active content. A message bar appears at the top of the browser s content window alerting the user to the presence of the active content. The user can click on the message bar to display several options, one of which is to allow the content. Because the Ascent Capture 6.1 Help system is stored locally, this message bar will display each time a user opens Help in a new instance of the browser. You can safely choose to allow the content each time you are prompted by Internet Explorer. Alternatively, you can disable this message by running Internet Explorer 6 and selecting Tools Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab and scroll down to the security section. Click the box next to Allow active content to run in files on My Computer. This will allow all active content to run locally, including the Ascent Capture Help. Kofax Image Products, Inc 5

Figure 1. Internet Explorer Security Settings Windows XP Service Pack 2 Firewall The default settings on the Windows firewall may interfere with certain Ascent Capture operations by blocking access to several ports required by either Ascent Capture or Ascent Capture Internet Server. To open ports in the Windows firewall 1 Run Regedit. 2 If you have a standalone installation, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\AscentCapture\MSSQLServer\SuperSocketNetLib\Tcp\TcpPort Otherwise, if you have a client system, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\SuperSocket NetLib\LastConnect 3 Make a note of the dynamically assigned port for later use. 4 Open the Windows XP control panel. 5 Open the Security Center. 6 Select the Windows Firewall. The Windows Firewall dialog box displays. 7 Select the Exceptions tab. 8 Click Add Port. The Add a Port dialog box appears. 9 Click Change Scope. The Change Scope dialog box opens. 10 Specify a scope appropriate for your security policies. 11 Click OK to save your scope settings and close the dialog box. 12 In the Name field type Ascent Capture TCP 2424 (or some other name that is meaningful for you). 13 In the Port field type 2424. 14 Select TCP. 15 Click OK to add the port to your exceptions list and close the dialog box. 16 Open the Add a Port dialog box again, and repeat this process to add UDP port 1434 (suggested name: Ascent Capture UDP 1434 ), TCP port 1433 (suggested name: Ascent Capture TCP 1433 ), and TCP port 1434 (suggested name: Ascent Capture TCP 1434 ). You can use any name that is meaningful to you, if you want to use a different naming style. 17 Repeat for the dynamic TCP port you found in the registry (suggested name: Ascent Capture Dynamic TCP ). 18 When done, click OK to close the Windows Firewall dialog box and save your settings. 6 Kofax Image Products, Inc.

MDAC Installation Warning When installing Ascent Capture on computers that already have Service Pack 2, you may get a message similar to that shown below. Service Pack 2 installs a newer version of MDAC than Ascent Capture. If this happens, just cancel the warning message, and continue with the Ascent Capture installation. Ascent Capture works fine with SP2 s version of MDAC. Figure 2. MDAC Installation Warning Upgrading Ascent Capture This section contains important information for those upgrading from earlier versions of Ascent Capture. Batches in Ascent Capture You can upgrade from Ascent Capture 5.x or above to Ascent Capture 6.1 while there are batches in the Ascent Capture system. If you are upgrading from earlier versions, finish processing all batches, and release them from Ascent Capture before you attempt to upgrade Ascent Capture. Client/Server Installations When upgrading Ascent Capture in a client/server configuration, you must upgrade the server software and files from the Ascent Capture installation CD. Then, you can upgrade the client workstations from the server machine. For a server installation, the upgrade or update must be performed on the machine where the server software is installed. Client workstation and standalone installations must be upgraded on the machines where the current installation exists. You cannot upgrade an Ascent Capture server from a client workstation. Ascent Capture with SQL Server If you moved the Ascent Capture Batch Catalog (database) to SQL Server in Ascent Capture 5.5x, you must use the Ascent Capture BCMove Utility (provided with Ascent Capture 5.5x) to temporarily convert the database back to MSDE before upgrading to Ascent Capture 6.1. After Kofax Image Products, Inc 7

upgrading, if desired, you can use the Ascent Capture Database Utility (instead of BCMove) to move the Ascent Capture database from MSDE back to SQL Server. Note If you are upgrading from Ascent Capture 6.0 or 6.05 to Ascent Capture 6.1, there is no need to temporarily move your database back to MSDE if your are currently using SQL server. For more information on the Ascent Capture BCMove Utility, refer to the documentation that you received with your Ascent Capture 5.51 software. Upgrading ACI Server When upgrading Ascent Capture to version 6.1 at an ACI Server central site, you must stop the Web site first. The site must remain stopped until ACI Server 6.1 is installed. Note It is not possible for a remote site to synchronize batch classes after Ascent Capture 6.1 has been installed at the central site, but before ACI Server 6.1 has been installed. When upgrading at a remote site, you must stop the Remote Synchronization Agent (RSA) if prompted to do so by the Ascent Capture installation application. The installation application cannot continue if the RSA is running. This prompt may occur several times during the course of an upgrade, since the RSA will automatically start after each reboot. To stop the RSA, right-click the RSA icon in your system tray and select Close. Note For late breaking information on ACI Server, refer to your Ascent Capture Internet Server 6.1 Release Notes. Support for Kofax KF-Series Boards Discontinued Ascent Capture no longer supports KF-Series boards. These boards are not compatible with the newest drivers shipped with Ascent Capture, so KF-Series boards must be removed from your computer before you install or upgrade to Ascent Capture 6.1. There is no need to uninstall the KF-Series board drivers, as they will be removed when you install Ascent Capture 6.1. Compatibility This section contains information about the compatibly of other Kofax products with Ascent Capture 6.1 Ascent Capture Web Validation Server Compatibility Ascent Capture Web Validation Server 5.5 is not compatible with Ascent Capture 6.1. However, the next release of this product will be compatible. Ascent Ricochet Compatibility Ascent Ricochet v6.0 and earlier is not compatible with Ascent Capture 6.1. However, the next release of this product will be compatible. 8 Kofax Image Products, Inc.

VirtualReScan Compatibility Ascent Capture 6.1 is compatible with VirtualReScan (VRS) 3.x. If you are installing VRS with Ascent Capture 6.1, refer to the Installation Guide for Ascent Capture and Ascent Capture Internet Server for instructions. For more information about the released versions of Software VRS and instructions for upgrading the software, visit the Kofax Web site at www.kofax.com and go to the Technical Support pages. Additional Information about This Release This section contains important information about this release of Ascent Capture. Ascent Capture Database Release Script The database release script included with Ascent Capture uses DAO, which is supposed to be compatible with all OBDC level 3 data sources. However, this is not the case for some of the newer Microsoft ODBC designs that use ADO/ADO.NET. Select Form Type Dialog Box Behavior Changed When creating a document in the Scan module, the Select Form Type dialog box may not always appear. This is a change from the way Ascent Capture behaved prior to version 5.51. This dialog box will display if you are using any method of document separation other than page recognition, and have more than one form type. This dialog box will not display if you are using the Recognition Server module for automatic document separation. (SPR 30062) Kofax Image Products, Inc 9

Possible Custom Module Incompatibility Ascent Capture supports multiple form identification zones. Consequently, the XML representation of these elements in custom modules includes a collection element that is the parent for all form identification and registration zones. This differs from XML representations prior to Ascent Capture 6.0, where multiple registration zones were listed as siblings. Because of this change, there may be cases where older custom modules that use these zones are not compatible with this version of Ascent Capture. If you have a custom module that is no longer compatible with Ascent Capture for this reason, you may need to modify your source code. (SPR 29568) Possible Page Level Bar Code Issue When scanning in duplex, page level bar codes (type 2 of 5) may not work if Back Delete Blank Page Threshold is enabled and separation uses the Type II Kofax patch code. In such cases, the page level barcode value may not be displayed in the Validation or Verification modules. Workaround: Use barcode separation instead of patch code separation. (SPRs 26241, 27123) Cannot Disable Prompt Before Closing Batch When using the Validation module in unattended mode (with a Softbridge Basic Language script), a message asking whether the batch should be closed appears when the batch is processed through the Validation module for the second time, even though the End of Batch Behavior close batch prompt has been disabled. This interrupts the processing for the current and any subsequent batches until someone clicks OK on the dialog. Workaround: None (SPR 28689) Using Auto-Import with UNC Paths If auto-import is used with a UNC path (for example, scan - i:\\mig\acxmlaid\autoimport.txt), an error similar to the following may be generated: "Error loading User Profile COM object: PFCapture.dll. Your batch catalog server or network may be down. Please contact your system administrator. [4087] KdoLib:Error obtaining process name: -5" Workaround: Used mapped drives rather than UNC paths. (SPR 30879) Using a Proxy Server When a proxy server is specified in Microsoft Internet Explorer, Ascent Capture licensing communications may also be routed through the proxy, and therefore not reach the Ascent Capture Service. If communications with the Ascent Capture Service are unavailable, licensing information is cut off and Ascent Capture will not run. Workaround: Remove the proxy settings from Internet Explorer at all Ascent Capture workstations. Alternatively, configure the proxy server to route all traffic on port 2424 back to the internal network, instead of forwarding it to the external network. (SPR 31462) 10 Kofax Image Products, Inc.

SQL Database Names Cannot Begin with Numeral In the Database Utility, if you specify a name, for the SQL-Server database that begins with a numeral (for example, 1_MyData ), you will get the following error: Error 1004: A database error occurred while moving the database (80040FA6), [4006] KdoLib: Error executing SQL command: Line 1: Incorrect syntax near '1'. (170)) Workaround: The database name must begin with '_' or an alpha character. (SPR 31522) Database Names Cannot Exceed 123 Characters You will get the following error if you enter a database name that is too long: Error 1004: A database error occurred while moving the database (80040FC6, [4006] KdoLib: Error executing SQL command. The identifier that starts with 'abc...' is too long. Maximum length is 128. (103). Workaround: The maximum database name must be 123 characters or less, to allow for appending a suffix to the database log file name. (SPR 31523) Using Aciscfg.exe with the Domain Administrator Account In Windows Server 2003, if you first enable the Ascent Capture Service with the Local System account, and subsequently change it to the domain Administrator account, aciscfg.exe may return an error when run ( Object reference not set ). Workaround: If you get this error, change the Ascent Capture Service properties back to the Local System account. This can be done in the Log On tab of the Ascent Capture Service Properties dialog box (which you can open from the Windows Services utility). (SPR 31061) Batch Field Required Property is Set to True In the tutorial LESSON_4.cab file, the batch field "Required" property is incorrectly set to True. It should be False to match the other tutorial files, as well as the Learning Ascent Capture 6.1 printed guide. Workaround: In the Administration module, import the cab file and navigate to the Batch Class Properties Dialog Box. Select the Site ID batch field, and change the Required property to False. If desired, you can export to a new file or replace the existing LESSON_4.cab file. (SPR 31634) Kofax Image Products, Inc 11
