Last mile challenges when building FTTH networks LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH, 7.12.2007 6
Regulatory Framework Regulation vs. Public policy A stable and predictable regulatory and public policy environment is key to enabling FTTH investment The current Regulatory Framework is being reviewed to conclude in Summer 2008? We are pleased to see that Next Generation Access (NGA) is a major component of the Review We believe a strong pro-investment NGA based on FTTH position needs to be further developed LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH, 7.12.2007 7
Outside plant challenges Civil costs are still prominent in most projects varying from 65 to 85% The costs for civil vary between the European countries from about 15/m to 125/m The rules regarding rights of ways are different between the European countries Speed of the roll-out defines the success of the business plan Space limitations within dense cities to build larger POPs Larger scale compressed roll-outs do result into disturbing the city live through traffic issues LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH, 7.12.2007 8
In-House challenges New MDU The Fiber cabling needs to be foreseen during the planning phase of the architecture and the landlords need to be convinced from day one The cabling system needs to be protected during the building of the in-house infrastructure The cabling system needs to become an easy to install solution enabling lower skilled labor to be used Existing MDU Customised solutions for the different buildings need to be engineered. Each building requires a site survey prior to installation The cabling solutions needs to be prepared both to connect the customer on day one and the future customers MDU - (Multi Dwelling Unit) LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH, 7.12.2007 9

Alternative FTTH roll-out concepts Reutilisation of existing ducts Utilisation of the Sewer Drainage networks Microtrenching Areal cable ultisation where possible Technologies for extraction of the copper elements in copper legacy cables and exchange them with ducts for FO cable LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH, 7.12.2007 15
NGA network concept 1 2 n.. ODF Closure with splitter n 1.... Multi Tube for Mini Cables Single Tube with 96 fibers Mini Cable Single Tube with 96 fibers pre-installed cable 2 to 96 fibers No splice point at the building inlet Possibility to cut the outer sheath an change the material to LSOH LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH, 7.12.2007 16
Next Generation Access Cabling System Next Generation Access Cabling Benefits: Reduction of the required skilled human resources New development of blowing process higher pressure longer distances No splice point at the building inlet reduction of the number of splices (-40%) Direct buried (no blowing process needed) Homes past with pre-installed or empty tubes possible (possibility to blow in the cables) Possibility to change the material of the tube in the in-house area (to LSOH) Bending insensitive through cable construction supported with G657 fiber LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH, 7.12.2007 17
