DSL Rings Enhance your network capacity with the multi award winning and patented DSL Rings from Genesis Technical Systems Twenty times your current bandwidth to the customer, up to 400 Mb/s, over existing copper networks

A new solution to an escalating challenge 400 Mb/s over copper DSL Rings, from Genesis Technical Systems, creates new revenue opportunities for telecommunications companies (Telcos) by enabling delivery of up to 400 Mb/s bandwidth over the existing copper network in both rural and urban areas. DSL Rings addresses the infrastructure investment challenge telecom operators are facing, whilst maintaining Quality of Service (QoS) and the capacity of service delivery to match ever increasing customer needs. Patented and future proofed DSL Rings is the multi award winning and patented revolutionary technology that enables Telcos to deliver superfast broadband speed at a fraction of the cost of Fibre to the Home (FTTH), whilst delivering more than enough capacity to bring very low cost triple play offers to both urban and rural areas. Low-cost, simple deployment DSL Rings is designed and developed to comply with a Telco s existing copper line infrastructure. It is very easy to deploy since it doesn t require new technical skills, right-of-way, or road works. DSL Rings benefits Telcos, their customers and users, by delivering affordable superfast broadband over copper telephone wires at a fraction of the cost of fibre. Prompt return on investment Affordable and highly profitable for Telcos, DSL Rings avoids the huge up-front costs of providing fibre infrastructure to people's homes and business premises, and the years necessary to realise a return on investment. With DSL Rings return on investment is typically realised within 24 months with a low cost, single day installation. Multiple applications and opportunities DSL Rings can be deployed in response to demand in rural, suburban and urban situations. DSL Rings works with both conventional backhaul copper, using standardsbased bonded DSL technology, and FTTCab, or fibre to the neighbourhood (FTTNode). It is a great alternative for FTTH or FTTP. DSL Rings can also be deployed and used as backhaul for femtocells and picocells, to off-load congested mobile networks. Copper to the Home DSL Rings delivers superfast broadband to the home over twisted pair copper from the exchange. DSL Rings as a last mile application (Fibre to the Cabinet/Copper to the Home) DSL Rings offers a last mile solution for when FTTH is not financially or environmentally viable. DSL Rings enables Telcos to immediately deliver cost effective value added services and to realise a return on their investment without delay. Rural DSL Rings has the ability to retain high bandwidths over long distances making it the ideal solution for rural environments. For the rural application the pairs terminate at the first Distribution Point and are rebonded towards the next Distribution Point going down stream. DSL Rings can deliver up to 400 Mb/s for up to 15 kilometres. Multi-dwelling Units (Fibre to the Basement/Copper to the Unit) For multi-dwelling units, usually found in urban environments, DSL Rings can be used to deliver superfast broadband to all floors and units when there are technical, financial or logistical reasons why fibre cannot be deployed throughout the building. 1.

Solution components The DSL Rings solution is composed of two components. On the physical network a Convergence Node (CN) is deployed at the distribution point to manage from 2 to 15 houses or premises. Each house is equipped with a Home Gateway (HGW). At the local exchange location, Genesis installs exchange gateway software developed to monitor all the rings deployed across the network. A full set of tools are embedded in the exchange gateway software, these include network management systems, provisioning, and auto-healing functions. Services legacy compliance DSL Rings is non-disruptive to existing traditional POTS services and allows the continuity of mandatory and emergency services (E999/E911). These can be maintained even in the case of power loss in the home. The solution is seamlessly deployed alongside both existing analogue and digital services. Enabling a full range of Internet Protocol and next generation services DSL Rings is secure and supports Wi-Fi, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), high definition Internet Protocol television (HD IPTV), video on demand (VoD) and femtocell backhaul. DSL Rings has been designed to enable encryption as well as QoS management and prioritisation of traffic on a per end user basis. A comprehensive eco-friendly solution DSL Rings is extremely environmentally friendly. Reusing copper cabling negates the need to lay new cable and thus avoids operational disruption, damage to buildings, and delays associated with regulatory and statutory requirements (e.g. right-of-way authorisation). Reusing copper saves time, money and energy. Indeed, DSL Rings requires much less mains power in the network than fibre, significantly reducing a Telcos carbon footprint. 2.

DSL Rings architecture Below is a graphical description of the architecture. Note that the links between the houses are implemented via a passive connection at the Convergence Node (CN). In this way, a single CN design can efficiently manage 2-15 houses in a given ring. Bonded pairs are used to obtain maximum bandwidth from the CO to the distribution point (DP). The CN is environmentally hardened and powered via the copper wire from the CO. It both terminates the bonded signals and acts as the gateway node for the subscriber ring. Each node can add, drop and pass through traffic. The VDSL2 based transmission curve restarts at each node. Studies have shown that in most cases the distances, or copper path length, from the distribution point to the house or premise are less than 250 meters (<750ft). VDSL2 bandwidth at this distance is up to 200 Mb/s (depending on VDSL2 chipset manufacturer s specifications and the quality of the cable), as illustrated over the page. Components of DSL Rings architecture 3.

How we achieve 400 Mb/s With DSL Rings there are two paths, one into and one out of each house, each with the potential of carrying up to 200 Mb/s. Therefore the bandwidth potential for this scenario is up to 400 Mb/s (200 Mb/s Eastbound and 200 Mb/s Westbound) depending on the number of bonded pairs and the actual distance from the DSLAM to the Distribution Point. The greater the number of subscribers on the ring, the greater the bandwidth pool available due to the greater number of pairs available for bonding from the Distribution Point to the Central Office or Exchange. DSL Rings vs. fibre Just like fibre, DSL Rings enables support for services such as VoIP, Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, M2M, CCTV and CATV, automated meter reading, mobile network offload, femtocell, picocell, HD IPTV, video conferencing, video streaming and VOD. Unlike fibre, the cost of deploying DSL Rings can be recovered within two years. See the table below for other important differences. DSL Rings Fibre Estimated period for ROI realisation (years) less than 2 5 to 30 Time required for installation One day Several months Requirement for upfront cabling and infrastructure investment No (demand led) Yes (speculative) Uses POTS exchange / central office to the premise Yes No 4.

Join the copper Broadband, revolution Superfast! Re-enter a world of innovation and profitability with DSL Rings Next generation superfast broadband at a fraction of the cost of providing FTTH or FTTP. Affordable superfast broadband connections and improved mobile coverage in rural and suburban, as well as urban locations. No preliminary infrastructure investment required. DSL Rings is a service solution with costs that can be recovered within two years, significantly improving returns from rapid, demand-led roll-out. Telco customer acquisition, win-back and retention facilitated by offering far better, faster deployment, higher bandwidth and low unit cost (per Mb/s) than current methods of delivering broadband services over copper. Installed with negligible regulatory, architectural and environmental impact. DSL Rings has the potential to help Telcos claim carbon credits for large deployments and requires no new skills, techniques, tools, or equipment for installation. The solution consumes less power, in the network, than fibre.
