Data Center High density High density Optical Distribution Racks (ODR) High density ODR s serve as a centralised administration point for all functional areas in the Data center. Used most effectively, the ODR acts as a «cross-connect» so that high fiber-count cable systems can be pre-installed to the different zones of the data center whilst patchcords within the ODR make the connections from one piece of equipment to another. Such a design reduces the amount of time it takes to link equipment and also prevents the cable chaos created by hundreds of individual fiber links from one rack to another. The LISA ODR from HUBER+SUHNER makes the perfect cross-connection rack, not only because of its unrivalled density but also because it allows one standard patchcord length to connect any of its 2000 ports. If this density is not enough, the LISA ODR can also be bayed side-by-side to create centralised cross-connects of 10'000 fibers+ due to its open c-shaped design. All LISA ODR s are based on a 300mm deep footprint which means that despite their high density, valuable floor space and airflow are not diversely affected. Based on a «building-block» design, the LISA ODR is completely modular and scalable. This offers our customers a «pay as you grow» concept as well as a «future-proofed» design capable of adapting to industry or technology changes. Reliability and performance are key to the success of a data center therefore we have ensured that the highest level of fiber protection and bend-radius limitation are standard across our ODR range. In addition to high density and optimised performance the LISA ODR is extremely easy to install and service. The open-rack design allows comprehensive access to all fibers from the front side, and accurate traceability is achieved through our module- based separation and dedicated fiber management. «Seamless Moves, Adds and Changes through exceptional high density fiber management» 7
Fiber management accessories Retrofittable fiber management At HUBER+SUHNER we pride ourselves in products which add value over the lifetime of a data center. Our portfolio of fiber management accessories ensure that moves, adds and changes are carried out quickly and safely without the risk of periodic failures or costly down-time. All of the LISA system products incorporate fiber management as standard, however not all equipment suppliers take the same comprehensive approach. For this reason HUBER+SUHNER offer a range of products which can be retrofitted to customers existing equipment racks. Our philosophy is based on three main principles; bend-radius control, separation and cable storage. Bend radius control ensures that the optical performance of fiber is not compromised during the complex routing from one location to another. This is relatively easy to achieve in dedicated optical distribution racks but within equipment racks there is often very little space or provisioning for fiber management. HUBER+SUHNER has developed a range of products to resolve this problem and now it is possible to retrofit fiber management to any rack regardless of size, type or internal equipment. Separation improves the traceability of fibers and dramatically reduces the amount of time it takes to access connections. By segmenting high density connections into smaller manageable units, network owners can benefit from dramatic OPEX savings during the installation and servicing phases of the network. Cable storage either in-rack or between racks makes sure that effective fiber management can be achieved regardless of cable length inaccuracies. This helps planners to utilise a more effective cable inventory whilst giving installers the flexibility to complete project deadlines quickly and effectively. HUBER+SUHNER offers fiber management solutions which contribute to organised, manageable data centers. If we can t deliver a solution with standard products; we will design a tailor-made product that does. «Products for organised, accessible and traceable connections»
9
Fiber containment Fiber systems Fiber containment provides a controlled and efficient method of routing and storing fiber optic cables between zones or equipment in the data center. Designed for maximum efficiency, fiber containment is critical for ensuring that Moves, Adds and Changes are carried out in an organised and methodical way. Unlike conventional metal trays or baskets, fiber containment encapsulates the fiber with a robust fire resistant material which prolongs the recovery time in disaster situations. This increased fiber protection not only ensures the long term integrity of the product but also ensures that business critical services remain operational at all times. Cables can be pulled quickly and easily through the fiber containment system and optical performance is optimised through comprehensive bend-limitation and lateral support. This ability to deploy cables quickly and easily will contribute to dramatic OPEX savings as well as improve the planning and procurement process for adding different length cables to the network. With a snap-together fixing method, the LISA ducting is extremely easy to construct with the minimum of tools and installer training. Ducting paths can be created over-head or under-floor depending on the preferences of our customers and the broad range of sizes from 30 mm up to 300 mm allows complete optimisation of the cable type and quantity. «Reduced OPEX and controlled cable routing through dedicated fiber containment»
hubersuhner.com/lisa HUBER+SUHNER offers extensive support and software tools for customers planning a new or upgraded fiber containment system. When floor plans and connection requirements are supplied, we will produce a detailed schematic using library building blocks and CAD layouts. In doing so, our aim is to produce the most economical and future proofed structure for deploying new cables across the data center. Our design is focused on improving efficiency during purchasing, installation, expansion and maintenance. 11

hubersuhner.com/lisa Zone and equipment distribution products The zone The Zone Distribution Area (ZDA) is generally an intermediary point between equipment racks and the ODR situated in the main distribution area. Pre-wired with cable systems or structured MPO/MPT assemblies, the ZDA facilitates moves, adds and changes without disrupting the overall infrastructure of the computer room. The ZDA could be a high density LISA ODR if it is serving many racks in a suite or it could be a smaller housing such as a wall-cabinet, subrack or floor box. HUBER+SUHNER offer a range of scalable products to suit these needs and with flexible LISA modules we offer generic solutions that can be adapted to any application or environment. Because of our high density approach to fiber management, HUBER+SUHNER products occupy the smallest possible footprint space in the data center. Our 300 mm deep ODR s can be mounted effectively at the end of server suite lines and our smaller cabinets can be positioned in areas where valuable floor space is not consumed. Under floor and overhead boxes offer an effective alternative to free-standing cabinets and if situated in «hot-aisle» locations they will not impact the vital air-flow from nearby equipment. All of HUBER+SUHNER s system products accept modular cassettes and this allows users to add capacity only when needed and in affordable increments. Connector types can easily be changed without removing the complete zone housing and this allows for unforeseen equipment developments and industry trends. «Modular distribution products for optimum flexibility and scalability» 13
Plug and play convenience for quick and easy installations Cable systems To reduce installation times and cable chaos between multiple pieces of equipment, HUBER+SUHNER developed installer-friendly plug and play cable systems called MASTERLINE and SMARTLINE. These cables can be fully customised and offer high density pre-connectorised links between the ODR in the Main Distribution Area (MDA) to zones and equipment elsewhere in the data center. Three times faster than conventional fusion splicing, pre-connectorised cable systems combine factory-made performance with customer-specific tail lengths for the ultimate in high density fiber links. «Cable systems for plug and play»
hubersuhner.com/lisa MASTERLINE pre-assembled cable systems are designed to be safe, quick and easy to install. After laying or pulling the cable, the protective tube can be removed allowing access to internal connectors. The pre-assembled cable system is then ready to use, with no splicing required or field termination equipment. Each individual tail on the MASTERLINE system is numbered for clear identification and each length can be made to the customer s required length. This customised feature means that no excess fiber is generated either between zones or inside the equipment rack. MASTERLINE systems can be produced with up to 144 fibers in a single cable of Ø 20mm or less making it extremely space efficient within «fiber containment» or «plenum voids». This density allows for additional future expansion and prevents cable congestion and restricted air-flow. To compliment the range further, HUBER+SUHNER also offer cable systems which are pre-assembled to LISA modules. This compatibility means that customers can benefit from exceptional fiber management in the MDA and customer-specific tail lengths on the equipment side. This plug and play philosophy enables fast, repeatable cable installations even by technicians with limited fiber optic knowledge. Unlike MASTERLINE where a standard loose tube cable is re-sleeved, the SMARTLINE product is manufactured with 12 individual simplex cables already jacketed. This construction makes SMARTLINE an ideal cable system for mass-patching and means that cable installation times are reduced by a factor of 12 when compared to individual simplex connections. HUBER+SUHNER s cable systems are industry leading in terms of performance, robustness and flexibility and our ability to combine cable systems with high density fiber management set us apart from the competition. HUBER+SUHNER have integrated MPO/MPT connectivity into the LISA range of Optical Distribution Racks allowing up to 2000 fibers to be pre-wired from LISA ODR s even before a single patching module has been added. This not only creates a scalable network but also allows for a «pay as you grow» approach to future rollouts and upgrades. 15

hubersuhner.com/lisa Customised cable systems for equipment racks The industry trend The industry trend towards higher density connectivity in Data centers has led to the problem of connecting fiber optic cables to tightly packed ports on modern blade servers. Of course making the physical connection is easy but routing and storing the excess cable length is where most problems and failures occur. To address this problem HUBER+SUHNER offer customised «plug and play» cable systems that are adapted to suit the port orientation of different supplier s equipment. Much more effective than individual patchcords, the cable system provides a single multi fiber cable which fans out to individual tails from one dedicated break-out stub close to the equipment. This eradicates the problem of storing excess fibers somewhere in the rack and subsequently provides the most space-efficient solution for high packing density. Unfortunately every piece of equipment in the data center is slightly different, therefore we offer design services for legacy equipment and will liaise with equipment suppliers in producing the perfect solution. Installers can now light up blade servers in a fraction of the time it would take to run patchcords and clearly numbered fiber tails improve the traceability during maintenance and service. HUBER+SUHNER offers a wide range of different cable systems depending on size restraints and density requirements. As an alternative to the standard break-out stub, customers can choose to utilise arrayed fiber connectors such as MPO/MPT to a location close to the blade and then connect customised hydra fanouts to the equipment. This structured pay as you grow approach means that cables can be pre-wired to strategic areas in the data center with fanout only added as and when the blade server is deployed. «Customised cable systems for high density equipment racks» 17

19
MPO/MPT structured cabling Probably the most significant addition to the network Probably the most significant addition to the network planner s tool kit is the multi fiber MPO/MPT connector. Providing 12 fibers in a single connector housing make it the most flexible and efficient method for deploying small form factor (SFF) links to strategic zones in the data center. The benefit of the MPO system is that high density links can be deployed from the MDA to the ZDA and then fanouts or hydra-assemblies can be added as and when equipment ports are introduced. Fanouts can be made with any connector type or length, therefore the MPO system represents a future-proofed infrastructure capable of addressing technology changes or industry preferences. «Structured multi fiber links for scalable, future-proofed networks»
hubersuhner.com/lisa HUBER+SUHNER has integrated MPO/MPT connectivity into the LISA range of Optical Distribution Racks allowing up to 2000 fibers to be pre-wired from LISA ODR s even before a single patching module has been added. This not only creates a scalable network but also allows for a «pay as you grow» approach to future rollouts and upgrades. In equipment racks, compact MPO/MPT modules offer a flexible distribution method with the highest available density. Patchcords can be used to connect from the front side of the module or for a tailor-made approach, hydra cables can be laced from the MPO/MPT connector directly to equipment. Normally available on ribbon cable, HUBER+SUHNER offers a round alternative so that installers can benefit from the improved handling offered by conventional cable constructions. 21
Connectivity systems for outlets The location The location and quantity of work area outlets within a data center is subject to periodical change. For this reason it is vital that the connection methods and installation practises are kept simple, fast and flexible. HUBER+SUHNER s QUICK ASSEMBLY termination system offers a safe and flexible alternative to splicing fibers in the field. With trusted and established processes, the QXA system reaches optical performance normally only possible with factory-made assemblies. In less than ninety seconds, technicians with limited fiber knowledge and experience can perform reliable and repeatable connections anywhere in the data center. The all-in-one multi-function tool not only guides the user through each step of the assembly process but also ensures that dangerous fiber particles are safely stored in a dedicated reservoir.the QXA system is available for both ST and SC connector types and the intelligent connector design allows ruggedised cables of up to 2.8mm in diameter to be terminated. In combination with HUBER+SUHNER s MASTERLINE QUICK cable system, the QXA offers end-to-end connections which are both high-performance and robust. Customers can choose whether they deploy factory-made systems or whether they prefer to terminate one or both ends on-site. This unlimited flexibility means that cable assemblies can be quickly deployed and re-deployed as and when the architecture of the data center changes. In addition HUBER+SUHNER also supply cable assemblies using the new «low-bend fiber» under ITU G.657 classification. This robust fiber type can be tacked directly to the wall or routed through restricted raceways where conventional fiber would see increased optical losses. Adopting this new technology not only guarantees optical performance but also provides a simple to use system for IT technicians who are more familiar with copper or electrical cables. «Reliable high performance field terminations for maximum mobility and flexibility»
