3 What is broadband Fixed Broadband Narrowband or dial up internet is provision of internet access connectivity via telephony lines with speed of usually below 512 Kbps Copper (ADSL2+) Up to 24Mb/s downstream Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) Up to 40Mb/s downstream Up to 15 Mb/s upstream Broadband is always on connectivity of speed more than 512 Kbps or 1 Mbps Fibre to the premise (FTTP) Up to 100Mb/s downstream Up to 30 Mb/s upstream Mobile Broadband Connectivity via smart phones, tablets and USB dongles in laptops Delivered via GPRS, 3G, LTE and WiFi Base station Device Mobile broadband (LTE) Up to 10Mb/s downstream Up to 5 Mb/s upstream
4 Rural communities are facing digital isolation Rural and remote rural is 23% of the total population There covers approx Omani communities The cost to cover these communities is up to 100 times that of the rest of the country and requires subsidy in order to the services to be affordable. TRA had number of previous attempts to support this under the operator USO obligations and with separate tender but real progress is slow Source: National Statistic of Oman

7 Oman Broadband Company was created to fill the market gap and accelerate the supply of affordable infrastructure OBC Vision: To provide efficient and affordable broadband infrastructure connecting all residents and businesses in Oman delivering economic benefits in alignment with Government s Vision of building sustainable knowledge based economy. Support for the existing operators Lowering the entry barrier for new entrants to compete on services Working alongside TRA and ITA to implement coordinated plan Solving previous issues in connecting rural communities Alignment with all other government infrastructure projects to reuse civil works
8 OBC is positioned as independent wholesale operation complementing existing operators not competing with them Category OBC position Customers Competitors OBC customers are the licensed telecom service providers, utility companies, government and specialist service providers using NBAP (traffic control, municipalities). OBC is designed to provide a utility style service hence it is not competing with service or infrastructure providers. It complements them.
