EBOOKS FOR YOUR NOOK (black & white screen) You ll Need: your library card, a computer with the Adobe Digital Editions software installed and your Nook To Start: Open your computer s web browser and go to http://overdrive.noblenet.org A B C D A. This menu bar will always be present providing you with a link to your account, access to a simple search box, an advances search directly underneath it, or the option to return to the home page. B. These columns allow you to browse by genre and interest and are divided into audiobook and ebooks. C. A series of highlighted titles, which may or may not be available at that moment. Note that the icon in the upper-right of the cover indicates whether it is a book or an audiobook as well as whether it s available or not (a black icon means available, light grey unavailable). Clicking on the bookmark below the cover will add the title to your wish list. D. Below this you ll find other options like always available ebooks and more categories of highlighted titles.
Some Overdrive Basics 4 Titles max can be checked out at the same time, with no renewals. Checkout Periods you get to choose! 1-3 weeks for ebooks and audiobooks. If a book is popular, there might be a queue but you can sign up to be notified when it is available. There s no need to return a book but you ll want to remove it from your device after you re finished reading see the instructions for Returning an ebook at the end of this handout. The Advanced Search A B Advanced searching is your friend! Do you want an ebook or an audiobook? A Kindle ebook or one for a Nook? Are you looking for something right now rather than waiting for it to come later? Advanced searching will separate the wheat from the chaff. A. The format option allows you to view only Nook ebooks, which are labeled as Adobe or Open EPUB and PDF ebooks. B. Selecting only show titles with copies available assures you that you won t be teased with books which you ll have to queue for.
Downloading & Installing Adobe Digital Editions 1. In order to transfer books to your Nook you will need to download and install the free Adobe Digital Editions software. You ll find the link to the software on the Overdrive homepage (overdrive.noblenet.org) at the bottom of the page toward the left-hand corner or you can go directly to the website at http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-editions.html 2. Once at the Adobe Digital Editions website, click Install now and follow the prompts to install.
3. Choose whether you re installing for a Mac or Windows computer. 4. The Adobe Digital Editions installer will begin. Follow the prompts to continue installing the software. 5. Once Adobe Digital Editions is installed, the program will open. Click on Help and Authorize Computer
6. You will be prompted to authorize your computer with an Adobe ID. If you do not have an Adobe ID, click on Create an Adobe ID where you can register for a free ID. After registering, return to the Computer Authorization screen and input your Adobe ID. Checking Out an ebook After you have found an ebook that you are interested in, it s a short series of steps to check it out. 1. Click on Borrow. If the title is not available, you will see Place a Hold instead. You can change the amount of time you d like to borrow the title underneath the Borrow button if you d like. 1
2. This will take you to your bookshelf, where you will see other titles that you have checked out as well. Click on Download to the right of the title. 2 3. From the dropdown, select EPUB or PDF ebook and then click on Confirm & Download. Follow the steps below to transfer it to your Nook. 3.
Transferring the ebook to your Nook 1. Once you have checked out the ebook Adobe Digital Editions will open and the book will automatically appear after a moment, depending upon your Internet connection speed. 2. When the book opens, you will be in Reading view. In order to transfer the book to your Nook, you will need to switch to Library view by clicking in the upper-left corner. 3. With your Nook plugged in to your computer, it will appear under the Bookshelves column within the All items subheading. Drag the book to your Nook and it will transfer. You can now eject your Nook from the computer and read your ebook. If you re using a Nook ereader, you ll be able to find the ebook in your Nook s library with all items displayed. If you re using a Nook tablet, the book will be within the my stuff folder in my files.
Returning an ebook early or removing the title from your Nook With your Nook plugged in to your computer, start the Adobe Digital Editions program. Click on NOOK under Devices and right-click on the book you would like to return; choose Return Borrowed Item from the dropdown. It will delete the book from your Nook and clear the item from your account.
Changing the Default Loan Period 1. When you start using OverDrive, it has a default loan period of one week. You can change that default in your account within the OverDrive app. In the upper-right corner of any OverDrive catalog page you ll see an Account icon. Tap on the icon and sign in using your library card number. 2. Tap on the right-hand column of options. Settings in 3. Under Lending Periods you can choose 7, 14 or 21 days for ebooks and Audiobooks.
