ABCD Family Planning Program Training for Health Leaders 2014 ABCD Family Planning Program Training Calendar INTRODUCTION TO FAMILY PLANNING A two-day training for health educators, outreach workers, and other community agency staff interested in a very basic introduction to family planning and reproductive health. Each year, ABCD Family Planning offers a comprehensive calendar of professional training opportunities. The following core programs are usually offered three times a year: BASIC FAMILY PLANNING: A six-day family planning counselor certification course FAMILY PLANNING FOR ADVANCED PRACTICE: A two-day course for nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants and physicians, with 14.5 contact hours. INTRODUCTION TO FAMILY PLANNING: A two-day course for community agency staff In addition, trainings on current reproductive health topics are held several times a year. Specialized trainings on family planning and reproductive health topics are available for community and health care agencies by special arrangement with ABCD staff. This training is designed for staff who are NOT working as family planning counselors. TOPICS INCLUDE: Male/Female Anatomy and Physiology, Reproductive/Sexual Health Basics, Birth Control Methods, Emergency Contraceptives, Pregnancy Options, Resources and Referrals. Participants attending the full two days will receive a certificate of completion. FEE: $80 (includes handouts, light refreshments). No cost for staff of ABCD and MDPH funded family planning programs. BASIC FAMILY PLANNING A six-day course for individuals working in family planning / reproductive health programs. This training provides a comprehensive introduction to family planning counseling, designed especially for those who have limited knowledge of family planning. TOPICS INCLUDE: Reproductive Anatomy and Physiology, Contraceptive Methods and Emergency Contraception, Pregnancy Options Information and Counseling Skills, STD/HIV Information and Prevention, Common Health Concerns, Sexual Health Issues, Adolescent Counseling and Family Involvement, Counseling Skills, Role-plays, and Activities. A certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the course, which includes workshop attendance at all six sessions, completion of homework, and passing a take-home exam. Certification of family planning counselors at Boston Family Planning sites includes observation of family planning counseling sessions. FEE: $240 (includes text, handouts, light refreshments). No cost for staff of ABCD and MDPH funded family planning programs. TOPICS INCLUDE: Reproductive Anatomy/ Endocrinology, Managing Combined Hormonal and, Progestin-Only Methods, Emergency Contraception, IUDs, Voluntary Sterilization, New Birth Control Methods, Pregnancy Options, STD/HIV Counseling in Family Planning Sessions, Safer Sex Counseling, Clinical Assessment, Counseling Skills, Counseling Adolescents, and Legal Issues in Reproductive Health. Contact Hour Information: This educational activity has been approved for 14.5 contact hours by the Commission on Continuing Education of the New Hampshire Nurses Association which is accredited as an approver of Continuing Education in Nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Staff requesting contact hours certificate will be charged $100 to defray approval expenses. INCORPORATING ROUTINE HIV SCREENING INTO THE FAMILY PLANNING SETTING Incorporating Routine HIV Screening into the Family Planning Setting, is a 2-day training designed for family planning counselors, reproductive health educators, and supervisors in the family planning clinical setting. TOPICS INCLUDE: Basic information about HIV, STIs, and Hepatitis; HIV testing options and processes, including the difference between rapid and conventional results; methodology of integrating HIV screening into a Family Planning counseling session; and efficient and safe techniques for conducting rapid HIV test. PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of the Basic Family Planning course or a similar Family Planning training. FEE: $80. No cost for staff of ABCD and MDPH funded family planning programs.
