2 The Vocational Nursing (VN) program at Pasadena City College accepts applications once a year for the 11 month program which begins each Fall. This 37 unit certificate program includes required courses in the Fall, Spring, and Summer sessions. The program is accredited by the California Board of Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Technicians. Applying to the Vocational Nursing Program In order to be considered for acceptance into the Vocational Nursing Program, applicant must submit a COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKET to the Health Science Division Office CEC B6, which includes the following: A. One official U.S. high school transcript or GED certificate or Equivalency Report from one of the college s acceptable companies; not required if an Associate or higher degree is posted on U.S. college transcripts. B. One official transcript of ALL U. S. colleges and universities attended. C. PCC Assessment testing Printout showing eligibility for placement in English 1A. Please see or call (626) The Assessment Center is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS AND PHOTOCOPIES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. Please note that upon acceptance to the Nursing Program the college s Records Office will also require transcripts. Incomplete applications will not be considered in the selection process. Application forms are available on line March 1 st April 1 st of each year Applications can be downloaded from the following website: *If the 1 st falls on a weekend or holiday, then the deadline is the following business day. All materials must be received in the Division office by 3:00 pm on the deadline date. NOTIFICATION s will be sent to applicants by only approximately 12 weeks after the close of the application period. Note to applicant: 1. Students selected for acceptance to the LVN program must take the LVN TEAS exam and achieve an adjusted individual score of 58 or higher. Students scoring less than 58 will be given a remediation plan to complete within one year. Enrollment in the LVN program is delayed until remediation is complete and the student scores 58 or higher on the retake of the LVN TEAS exam within one year. 2. Transcripts and applications must be resubmitted each application period. 3. In Progress work for the prerequisites may be considered during the selection process. Final selection is pending evidence of satisfactory completion of any in progress prerequisites. 4. It is highly recommended that basic science courses (nutrition, physiology, math and psychology) be completed within the past five years with a grade of C or higher. 5. All courses offered in the Vocational Nursing Program may be challenged for credit. Contact the department for information. 6. Submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance.
3 Students with Foreign Transcripts: Students with foreign transcripts must have their transcripts evaluated by one of the following three companies prior to applying: International Education Academic Credentials American Education Research Research Foundation Evaluation Institute Center (IERF) (ACEI) (AERC) (310) (310) (626 ) Selection Criteria for Admission 1. New applicants to the VN program who have completed all requirements and prerequisites with a grade of C or higher have priority admission. 2. Students who withdrew from the VN program a year ago and are eligible for readmission. 3. Transfer students. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of positions available, selections will be prioritized according prerequisite grade point average. Additional qualified applicants will be placed on an alternate list. Prerequisites Prerequisites to the Licensed Vocational Nursing Program (selection is based on these requirements): A valid California Nurse Assistant Certificate (expired certificates not accepted) Nutrition 11 Physiology 100 or Physiology 1A & Anatomy 25 (later also meets prerequisite requirement for the Career Ladder LVN-RN program) Psychology 24 Lifespan (birth to death) Prealgebra courses: Math 401A and 401B or Math 402 or higher level courses in algebra PCC Assessment Test score showing placement eligibility into English 1A Contact a counselor in Building L Room 104 for further information on prerequisite requirements. 4 Completing & Licensure Upon completion of this curriculum the student will receive a Certificate of Achievement and will be eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination-Vocational Nurse (NCLEX- VN). If successful graduates will qualify to receive a license from the Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners to practice vocational nursing in the State of California. Additional Information General Admission Requirements for the Nursing Programs: 1. Students requesting a transfer from another nursing programs or advanced placement, will need to obtain a petition from Student and Learning Services in L Upon selection to the LVN program students are required to complete: A health clearance Criminal background check in order to be able to attend clinical experiences. Details regarding these clearances will be provided with the acceptance packet upon selection. Students who have questions or concerns about the background check are encouraged to make an appointment to discuss these concerns with the nursing program director. 3. Nursing students must have the ability to communicate safely, accurately, and effectively in both written and spoken English. To enhance success, students who have English as a second language are encouraged to enroll in Speech 3, 10, 121 and/or 125 and Medical Assisting A maximum of five seats will be reserved for applicants who have successfully completed the Certified Nursing Assistant course (N103) at Pasadena City College, who have a letter of recommendation from their C.N.A. instructor and have a current California Nurse Assistant Certificate (expired certificates not accepted). PCC LVN graduates applying for placement in the LVN to RN Career Ladder program are guaranteed admission when they have met all admission requirements for the Career Ladder program. Upon completion of a 6 week LVN to RN bridge course, Career Ladder students will join the third semester of the RN program. It is advised that interested students speak with a college counselor early in order to best determine sequencing of pre-requisite courses. A Grade Point Average of 2.50 or higher is required in the Career Ladder prerequisite courses: English 001A Microbiology 002 Anatomy 025 Physiology 001 Intermediate Algebra 131 or higher math course A printout of the TEAS V transcript with an adjusted individual total score of 62 or higher is also required unless the applicant has a Bachelor s or higher degree posted to their sealed, unopened official transcripts.
