5 Credentialing An Umbrella Term A term applied to processes used to designate that an individual, program, institution, or product has met established standards set by an agent (governmental or non-governmental) recognized as qualified to carry out this task The standards may be minimal and mandatory or above the minimum and voluntary 5

7 Credentialing Terminology Accreditation is the process by which a voluntary, nongovernmental agency or organization appraises and grants accredited status to institutions and/or programs or services which meet predetermined structure, process, and outcome criteria. ANCC s Accreditation program includes: Accreditation of continuing nursing education organizations Accreditation of courses to validate a nurse s skills or skill sets in the clinical setting (Nursing Skills Competency Program) Joint accreditation for interdisciplinary continuing education with Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) 7

8 Credentialing Terminology Certification is a process by which a non-governmental agency or association certifies that an individual licensed to practice a profession has met certain predetermined standards specified by that profession for specialty practice. Its purpose is to assure various publics that an individual has mastered a body of knowledge and acquired skills in a particular specialty. ANCC s Certification Program includes: Specialty RN board certification Advanced practice board certification 8

9 Credentialing Terminology Recognition is formal acknowledgement that a program, institution, or service has met a set of criteria promulgated by an official agency.
