EXTERIOR FEATURES * Parking 16 spaces are striped as accessible but only 5 have signs. None are designated as van accessible. Access aisles are 60 wide. (1,200 total spaces) At least 2 accessible spaces shall be designated as van accessible and be served with access aisles at least 96 wide and at least 20 standard accessible spaces served with 60 minimum width access aisles. Two spaces may share a common access aisle. Signs shall be located so they cannot be obscured by a vehicle parked in the space (4.1.2(5), 4.6.3 & 4.6.4). Recommendation: install an additional van accessible space and a standard space near the Education Center. $1,500 Accessible Paths of Travel There is one existing curb ramp near the Zoo entrance. Ramp sides slope up to 14%. Note: there is a steep (20%) sloped curb the length of the entrance If a curb ramp is located where pedestrians must walk across the ramp, or where it is not protected by handrails or guardrails, it shall have flared sides; the maximum slope of the flare shall be 1:10 or 10% (4.7.5). Recommendation: install another curb ramp east of the existing curb ramp. Paint curb ramps so that they are easily recognized and to discourage use of the steeper curb. $800 There are numerous exterior routes to exhibits that have running slopes that exceed 5%, however, due to the lay of the land and nature of the exhibits, some areas are not able to meet that standard. Recommendation: on any new exhibits or routes to exhibits, try to maintain a running slope at or less than 5%. -- Ticket Counters 2 counters are 37 ¾ high and 30 ½ long. Where only one drinking fountain is provided on a floor there shall be a drinking fountain which is accessible to individuals who use wheelchairs and one accessible to those who have difficulty bending or stooping. This can be accommodated by using a "hi-lo" fountain; by providing one fountain accessible to those who use wheelchairs and one fountain at a standard height convenient for those who have difficulty bending (4.15.2 & 4.1.3(10)(a)). Where permanent identification is provided for rooms and spaces, signs shall be installed on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door. If a ramp run has a rise greater than 6 or a horizontal projection greater than 72, then it shall have handrails on both sides. Top of handrail gripping surfaces shall be mounted between 34 and 38 above ramp surfaces. Gripping surfaces shall be continuous. If handrails are not continuous, they shall extend at least 12 beyond the top and bottom of the ramp segment and shall be parallel with the floor or ground surface (4.8.5). $1,500 - The mid ramp has no handrails. If a ramp run has a rise greater than 6 or a horizontal projection greater than 72, then it shall have handrails on both sides (4.8.5). $2,500 The exit ramps have running slopes up to 12% and only one handrail (partial). 1:12 or 8.33% maximum. If a ramp run has a rise greater than 6 or a horizontal projection greater than 72, then it shall have handrails on both sides (4.8.2 & 4.8.5).
