1 The following are summarized excerpts from some of the new building codes for these accessible bathroom fixtures. Please refer to the 2013 California Building Code books for more details and drawings. COMMON USE TOILET ROOM FACILITIES General Doors shall not swing into floor space required for any toilet room fixture All fixtures and controls shall be on an accessible route Clear floor spaces at fixtures and controls, the accessible route and the turning space may overlap When six or more toilet compartments are provided within a multipleaccommodation toile room or when the combination of urinals and water closets totals six or more fixtures, at least one ambulatory compartment shall added MULTIPLE-ACCOMMODATION TOILET FACILITIES Page 1 of 5

2 Accessible Water Closet Compartment The accessible water closet compartment shall be 60 wide minimum measured perpendicular to the side wall o 56 deep minimum for wall hung water closets o 59 deep minimum for floor mounted water closets Water closet fixtures shall be positioned with a wall or partition to the rear and to one side o The centerline of the water closet shall be 17 minimum to 18 maximum from the side wall or partition Associated grab bars, dispensers, sanitary napkin disposal units, coat hooks, shelves shall be permitted to overlap the water closet Accessible routes, clear floor space and clearances required at other fixtures and turning space is also permitted to overlap the water closet clearance For end-opening compartment doors facing the water closet, a 48 deep minimum and a 60 wide minimum clear maneuvering space shall be provided For side-opening compartment doors, a 60 deep minimum and a 60 wide minimum clear maneuvering space shall be provided Water Closet Compartment Doors The compartment door shall open at a 90 degree angle from its closed position The door shall be equipped with an automatic closing device If located at the end of the compartment, the unobstructed door opening shall be 32 wide If located at the side of the compartment, the unobstructed door opening shall be 34 wide There shall be a minimum 9 clearance underneath the door for footrests The inside and outside of the compartment door shall be equipped with a loop or U-shaped handle immediately below the flip-over, sliding or non-grasping/twisting latch Except for door opening widths and door swings, unobstructed access of not less than 44 wide shall be provided to the water closet compartment The space immediately in front of the water closet shall not be less than 48 deep as measured at right angles to compartment door in its closed position Grab Bars The side wall grab bar shall be 42 long minimum, located 12 maximum from the rear wall and extend 54 minimum from the rear wall The front end of the side grab bar shall be positioned 24 minimum in front of the water closet The rear grab bar shall be 36 long minimum and extend from the cernterline of the water closet 12 minimum on one side and 24 minimum on the other side The circular cross section shall have an outside diameter of 1-1/4 minimum and 2 maximum cross section Page 2 of 5

3 Shear and tensile force induced in a grab bar and mounting devices shall be a 250-pound point load Grab bars shall not rotate within their fittings The space between the wall and the grab bar shall be 1-1/2 minimum The space between the grab bar and projecting objects above shall be 12 minimum When the enforcing agency requires flush controls for flush valves to be located in a position that conflicts with the location of the rear grab bar shall be permitted to be split or shifted to the open side of the toilet area Ambulatory Water Closet Compartment The ambulatory compartment shall have a depth of 60 minimum and a width of 35 minimum and 37 maximum The ambulatory accessible toilet compartments shall be 17 minimum and 19 maximum from the side wall or partition The compartment door shall be self-closing and not swing into the minimum required compartment area Grab bars shall be installed in a horizontal position 33 minimum and 36 maximum above the finish floor measured to the top of the gripping surface Accessible Urinals At least one urinal shall be accessible The rim of the wall hung urinal shall be 17 maximum above the finish floor Urinals shall be 13-2/3 deep minimum measured from the outer face of the rim to the back of the fixture Flush controls, operable by one hand, shall be mounted no more than 44 above the floor The force require to activate controls shall be no greater than 5 pounds Electronic automatic flushing controls are preferable A clear floor space 30 by 48 shall be provided in front of the urinal to allow forward approach Page 3 of 5

4 SINGLE-ACCOMMODATION TOILET FACILITIES Accessible Toilet Room There shall be sufficient space in the toilet room for a wheelchair measuring 30 wide by 48 long to enter the room and permit the door to close A clear turning space of at least 6 in diameter or a T-shaped space within a 60 square minimum with arms and base 36 wide minimum as per above drawing Door shall not encroach into the turning space by more than 12 Required clear floor space, clearance at fixtures and turning shape shall be permitted to overlap 1. The accessible water closet compartment shall be 60 wide minimum measured perpendicular to the side wall and 56 deep minimum measured perpendicular from the back wall The water closet fixture shall be positioned with a wall or partition to the rear and to one side Page 4 of 5

5 The centerline of the water closet shall be 17 minimum to 18 maximum from the side wall or partition Grab Bars and Accessories Associated grab bars, dispensers, sanitary napkin disposal units, coat hooks, shelves shall be permitted to overlap the water closet Grab bar placement is the same as for the accessible water closet compartment in multiple-accommodation toilet facilities Page 5 of 5
