Resort information Grindelwald, or the glacier village as it is known, is the largest and oldest resort in the Jungfrau region. One of the most attractive and popular tourist destinations in Switzerland, this is a charming all year round resort and a popular choice for those wishing to establish residency in Switzerland. Like many of the best dual season resorts, the village itself is low (1034m), but the 4000m peaks of the Eiger and Jungfrau tower over the village creating a stunning backdrop and providing some of the best skiing in Switzerland. Getting there Getting to Grindelwald is very straightforward, with plenty of airports to chose from. The resort is approximately 2hrs drive from Zurich airport (151km), 2hrs 45mins drive from Geneva airport (241km), about 2hrs from Basel (174km) and only 1hr from Berne airport (67km). www.easyjet.com & www.ba.com fly to Basel, Geneva & Zurich, www.flybe.com fly to Geneva, Zurich & Berne in the Winter. Swiss Air www.swiss. com also fly into Zurich from London. The famous peaks mean that Grindelwald is a popular destination amongst mountaineers, while the dramatic scenery, charming traditional cog railways, fantastic local food and lively town mean that this resort offers plenty of Swiss character all year round.
Winter The network of cable cars and mountain railways serves a total of 213km of piste and gives the skiing a unique Swiss charm, while the system runs with typical efficiency. Grindelwald shares a ski pass with Wengen and Murren, with a total of over 45 lifts. There are nursery slopes at Bodmi and Kleine Scheidegg served by the cog railway, and there are some nice long rolling blue runs for beginners to progress to. Intermediate skiers have plenty of runs to choose from and can spend a day travelling across the ski area to Wengen, with plenty of wide open pistes and well groomed slopes across the ski area. There is accessible off-piste skiing and heli-skiing for those seeking backcountry, and the mountain guides are amongst the best in the world. Grindelwald offers plenty of other winter sports, from snow shoeing to ice skating, with some runs dedicated to toboggans and snow tubing, including Europe s longest toboggan run (a 15km descent).
Winter sports Grindelwald is the only resort where we have seen bicycle sledges, a wooden sledge which you sit on like a bike. There is also an ice rink and a good sports centre with a pool and wellness area in the resort. Grindelwald has a long mountaineering tradition but there are plenty of cleared paths for walking. Après Ski The nightlife is the most lively of the Jungfrau resorts and although it is mainly hotel-based, there are three discos and some good late night bars. The Challi bar in the Hotel Kreuz and Post, and Herby s in the Hotel Regina are always busy. One of the most popular bars for workers in the resort is the Avocado bar, where they hold events like freestyle jams throughout the season. The Jungfrau region also plays host to the annual music event SnowpenAir; the highest open-air concert in the world at 2061m above sea level.
Summer Grindelwald is one of the most scenic resorts in Switzerland and is a must for Japanese tourists doing Europe. The dual season resort is as busy in summer as it is in winter, and has wonderful walks, fishing, and climbing, as well as the usual summer sports such as tennis. The proximity to Interlaken with its lake and golf course makes this the perfect base for summer touring. The Swiss rails system is always fantastic and the train to the highest station, the jungfraujoch at 3,454m boasts stunning views and is well worth a trip. The Bernese Oberland has some of the most incredible scenery in the Alps and the Lauterbrunnen valley is stunning at all times of the year, while Grindelwald sits in a unique position in the cradle of the Eiger, the Monch and the Jungfrau.
