Branding 1910 University Drive, Boise, Idaho 83725-1916 (208) 426-3617, BoiseStatePublicRadio.org Business Support is called Underwriting Business and corporate support messages are really our thanks to organizations for providing financial and in-kind contributions to our programs and programming. Having a business name associated with programming on a member-supported station like Boise State Public Radio builds recognition and brand loyalty. Research finds: 80% of public radio listeners say they have a positive impression of a company that supports public radio. 70% of listeners say that underwriting messages have a positive impact on their purchase decisions. 28% of listeners claim to have been directly influenced by public radio in buying a product or service, versus only 5-to-7 percent who claimed to have been influenced by messages on a commercial radio station. Business Support Support is not quite the same as Advertising As a member-supported radio station operating in the public interest, the FCC restricts the language we can use to recognize our supporters. Announcements are factual, not comparative, and cannot include specific calls to action. But our listeners don t need to be cajoled into buying tickets to events. Boise State Public Radio listeners attend concerts, go to performances and exhibitions, and travel regularly. They rely on our station to keep them in-the-know. Reach Your Message Stands Out As a public radio station, we don t clutter our airwaves with a lot of needless or distracting chatter. We air an average of four local spots per hour, so your message is spotlighted and not lost in the crowd. Compare this to commercial radio, which might have as many as 18 ads per hour. Your Message Is Unobtrusive Business support messages are informational and are often perceived as endorsements by the station that the listener loves. The halo effect confirms that listeners prefer patronizing a company that supports their station. Your Support S upport is E ffective and E fficient Since Boise State Public Radio is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation (through the Boise State University Foundation), your contribution may be a tax deductible expense. Always check with your tax consultant. Get Results The bottom line is that underwriters get results on Boise State Public Radio. An NPR study shows that 83 percent of the NPR audience have a more positive opinion of a company when it supports public radio, and when price and quality are equal, 77 percent prefer to buy products from public radio supporters.* Support on Boise State Public Radio is not only good for business, but it also provides support for a valued community resource. Ninety-four percent of the NPR audience agree that public radio programming is important, and if it went away, they would miss it.* *Source 2007 NPR/Jacobs Media
Non-Commercial These guidelines help preserve the non-commercial nature of Boise State Public Radio. Our listeners value this as part of what makes public radio unique in sound and substance. In addition to providing exceptional programming, we maintain a non-commercial, uncluttered and intelligent environment, keep listeners engaged during breaks and air business support announcements in keeping with our programming values, as well as with FCC requirements. Your contribution demonstrates to our listeners your commitment to community service and quality programming. A message must identify, but may not promote, the business, its services, facilities or products. It may not express the business views on any matter of public interest or importance. It may not support or oppose any political candidate. And it must be scheduled so as not to interrupt a station s programs. In addition to these legal requirements, messages must be in keeping with the noncommercial nature of our station. To maintain the consistency of our sound, all messages are prerecorded by a station voice. Business support messages may: Describe your business. Identify facilities, services, products or product lines (no more than a total of three mentions per announcement). Describe your corporate mission. Inform the public of events you sponsor. Include a corporate slogan, so long as it is not flagrantly promotional. Include a web address, phone number and street address for your business. Indicate the number of years you have been in business. Include the name of a nonprofit organization you support, although it must be clear that you are providing the funding for the announcement. Business support messages may not include: Qualitative language. (e.g., award-winning, leading, etc.) Comparative language. (e.g., better, best, oldest etc.) A call to action ( Visit our store ). An inducement to buy, sell, rent or lease. References to price or value. Personal pronouns, unless as part of a slogan. Length of Announcement: Business support messages may not exceed 20 seconds. Competitive Media Support by commercial and non-commercial media organizations is permitted. Editorial Control The station exercises absolute editorial control over all copy and reserves the right to edit copy to conform to station and FCC guidelines.
