INFORMATION ABOUT THE VADSTENA SUMMER COURSES The Swedish Lace Association offers summer courses in Vadstena bobbin lace making and other Swedish lace making techniques. The courses are held at Vadstena Folkhögskola in the unique, inspiring historical town of Vadstena on the coast of Lake Vättern. Application: At the latest April 13, 2015. Notification of acceptance will be sent in May 2015. Applications submitted after April 13 will be considered if places are available. Course fees: Payable upon invoice no later than May 31, 2015. Refunds only if the course is cancelled or in the case of illness, in which a doctor s certificate is required. An administrative fee of 500:- SEK will be charged. Those attending two one-week courses will receive a discount of 600:- SEK. Full time students with valid certificate will receive a 300:- SEK discount Accommodation: Accommodation can be arranged from Sunday, June 21 at Vadstena Folkhögskola. The school offers good hostel standards including kitchens. The rooms all have showers and toilets. Single rooms cost 340:- SEK per night, double rooms cost 290:- SEK per person per night. Please bring your own linen and towels. It is possible to rent linen and/or towels for 80:-/40:- SEK. Please check the box on the application form if desired. The cost for accommodation and linen is paid upon invoice no later than May 31, 2015.. It is possible to have lunch at the school cafeteria for 74:- SEK/day. Please check the box on the application form and send it in no later than April 4. This is a definite obligation! Lunch is paid at the school cafeteria. Literature and most other material for the courses can be bought on campus or in the Association s shop. ADVANCED COURSE I Date: June 22 July 3, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Course Contents: Practical bobbin lace making combined with history, mounting, drawing patterns and analysis. Course Objectives: To create an interest and enthusiasm for bobbin lace making and to preserve the cultural inheritance and development of same as well as stimulating creativity, versatility and an inquisitive attitude regarding bobbin lace making. Literature: The Swedish books Knyppling (Natur och Kultur) and Att dikta en spets (Warne förlag). Qualifications: Good and up-to-date knowledge of bobbin lace making. Please submit 12 cm of each of the exercise laces in the textbook Knyppling as an example of your work together with your application. how much you accomplish during the course, approx. 500:- SEK. ADVANCED COURSE II Date: June 22 July 3, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Course Contents: Making bobbin lace with finer threads, beginning with Sampler II from the book Knyppling, analysing, drawing and pricking of patterns. Lessons in basic bobbin lace techniques and lace making from other countries are included. Course Objectives: To create an interest and enthusiasm for bobbin lace making and to preserve the cultural inheritance and development of the same, as well as stimulating creativity, versatility and an inquisitive attitude regarding bobbin lace making. Literature: The Swedish books Knyppling (Natur och Kultur), and Att dikta en spets (Warne förlag). ADVANCED COURSE III Date: June 22 July 3, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Course Contents: You improve your skills of choosing the right materials for different techniques and patterns. You tackle advanced patterns in coarse threads, for example lace for altar cloths, plus a lace sample analysis. Lessons in the development of European lace making are included. Course Objectives: To create an interest and enthusiasm for bobbin lace making and to stimulate creativity, versatility and an inquisitive attitude regarding bobbin lace making. Literature: The Swedish books Knyppling (Natur och Kultur), and Att dikta en spets (Warne förlag). PROVINCIAL LACE MAKING Date: June 22 July 3, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Note: You can choose between a full two-weekscourse, a one-week course or a two-week advanced course in either of the two available techniques (see application form for details). Course Contents: The course teaches the basic skills in provincial lace making to preserve and further develop the local variations of lace traditions. Lace from Dalecarlia and Scania and its nearby regions will be in focus. You will make acquaintance with the different techniques, pillows and materials from these areas. Course Objectives: To create an interest and enthusiasm for bobbin lace making and to stimulate creativity, versatility and an inquisitive attitude regarding bobbin lace making. Literature: The Swedish books Att dikta en spets (Warne förlag) and I Knipplingahjörnan (Österlens Museum). STUDIES IN COMPOSITION Date: June 22 July 3, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Course Contents: The course gives you the basic skills in overall design for lace making including in-depth knowledge of designing bobbin lace patterns and adaptation to different materials. Course Objectives: To provide knowledge of the expression of image and form in lace making and to develop skills in sketching evaluation. 7. BEGINNERS AND ADVANCED COURSE Date: June 22 June 26, 38 hours of instruction Course Contents: The course is intended for beginners and even those who are a little more advanced. You work at your own level. Beginners are taught the basic skills in Vadstena bobbin lace making. A competent instructor will give you the necessary guidance so you can develop your own skills which will enable you to continue lace making on your own after the course. Literature: The Swedish book Knyppling (Natur och Kultur). Qualifications: No previous skills necessary. This course is open for everyone! how much you accomplish during the course, approx. 300:- SEK. Course fee: 2350:- SEK 8. BEGINNERS AND ADVANCED COURSE Date: June 29 July 3, 38 hours of instruction Please see the above description of Course 7. 9. CHILDREN S COURSE IN LACE MAKING Date: June 22 June 26, 25 hours of instruction from 9 am to 1 pm Course Contents: This course gives you the basic skills in Vadstena bobbin lace making. Those who already can make lace continue to develop their skills. Material Costs: The cost of borrowing a lace pillow, bobbins and necessary materials are included in the course fee. Qualifications: This course is for those who want to begin lace making and for those who already can make lace. Age: From 7 years. Number of participants: A maximum of 6. Course fee: A reduced fee of 1000:- SEK. 10. CHILDREN S COURSE IN LACE MAKING Date: June 29 July 3, 25 hours of instruction from 9 am to 1 pm Please see the above description of Course 9. 7

PICTORIAL BOBBIN LACE Date: June 22 June 26 or June 29 July 3, 38 hours of instruction Course Contents: You choose your own motif and challenge your creativity being inspired by coulours and shapes. Qualifications: Good skills in lace making. Literature: The following Swedish books: Knypplade Bilder, Knypplat Till Husbehov, Knypplade Fåglar (Warne förlag) and Knypplade Blommor (Barbara Fay Verlag). how much you accomplish during the course, approx. 300:- SEK. Course fee: 2350:- SEK 12. BOBBIN LACE IN METAL WIRE Date: June 22 June 26, 38 hours of instruction Course Contents: To make bobbin lace with a metal wire is fun and modern. We use new patterns which are especially developed to practice the different moments of wire lace making. It is also possible to explore in other ways. Is it possible to make lace in wire from old patterns? How can you use a lace made of wire? We discuss and exchange ideas. 13. NEEDLE AND EMBROIDERED LACE Date: June 22 July 26, 38 hours of instruction Course Contents: There is a big family of laces. We will devote ourselves to two of them. The beautiful old laces made with needle and thread and embroidered lace, for both of which Venice is famous. How did they make these laces during the Arts and Crafts period? We will also see how we can combine techniques. How can we insert a needle lace, an embordered laces or a bobbin lace in a piece with no straight edges? BRUGES FLOWER LACE Date: June 22 June 26 or June 29 July 3, 38 hours of instruction Course Contents: This lace (Grof Bruges Bloemwerk) originates from Bruges in Belgium and is distinguished by flowers, leaves and meandering trails. It is made with few pairs in separate pieces which then are connected with a crochet hook. You learn the basic techniques and will make the most common motifs and fillings with plaits between the motifs. Literature: Course compendium. MOUNTING BOBBIN LACE Date: June 26 June 28, 22 hours of instruction Friday 17.00-20.00, Saturday 09.00-17.20, Sunday 09.00-15.00 Course Contents: This course is for those who want to learn to mount lace, according to the Swedish Lace Association. Bring your own finished lace or buy lace at the course. Qualifications: Sewing skills are necessary. Literature: The Swedish book Knyppling (Natur och Kultur). how much you accomplish during the course, approx. 400:- SEK. Course fee: 1580:- SEK Instructor: Kerstin Sandberg 16. SCANIAN PETTERSSON LACE Date: June 26 June 28, 22 hours of instruction Friday 17.00-20.00, Saturday 09.00-17.20, Sunday 09.00-15.00 Course Contents: The Pettersson laces were made during the years 1800-1839 by the family Pettersson from Österlen, Scania. The characteristics of these laces are the geometrical shapes they share with Scanian free-hand lace. You will learn the basics by using a standard pricked, unmarked pattern and a working diagram. With the given shapes, it is possible for you to make your own combinations and designs. It is also possible to make corners in this technique. Re-discover this old lace, its technique and its advantages. The same technique was and still is used in Hälsingland. Qualifications: Good and up-to-date skills in bobbin lace making.
