1 SHORT RESIDENTIAL UNITS OVERSEAS WINTER VACATION 2014 PROGRAMS Overview University of Duisburg Essen Intermediate and Advanced German 6 th July - 27th July 2014(3 weeks) Macquarie application deadline: Sunday 23 rd March 2014 The University of Duisburg-Essen is situated in the German federal state of North Rhine- Westphalia. The University ranks among the 10 largest German universities with 12 faculties and more than 30,000 students. Many international students study at the University of Duisburg- Essen and give the cities of Duisburg and Essen an international atmosphere. This program has been specifically developed for Macquarie students studying intermediate and advanced level German. The program consists of intensive German language lessons as well as cultural and social activities. Students will gain credit towards their Macquarie award program and enhance their language skills through this three-week language immersion program. Program description This course is for intermediate and advanced students only: students studying at 200 or 300 level at Macquarie (B1 or B2 level). The course is taught entirely in German utilising modern teaching methods and one-on-one advice. Lessons will include topics on: Communication Listening comprehension Reading comprehension
2 Vocabulary Text production Pronunciation Grammar The emphasis will be on acquiring communication skills. Students will have the chance to participate in student-led tutorials designed to expand language skills and help prepare for and enjoy the cultural program. The program also includes a cultural studies component. Activities and excursions will be organised to help students experience and explore the Rhine-Ruhr region. Student Profile The course is open to students who are studying intermediate or advanced German level at. The short term programs are primarily for students undertaking a study program with a language major at (BIntStud/BA/DipLang). Only in exceptional circumstances will students from other faculties who have been studying a language at Macquarie be permitted to participate, provided the credit they gain from the program can be applied to their degree. Places available A minimum of 10 students is required to offer the program; University Duisburg-Essen may cancel the course if the number of participants is insufficient. Selection Criteria Students must be enrolled in a relevant degree award program at the time of application and also at the time of travel. Students must have completed 18 credit points towards their degree, with exceptions outlined below. Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. In exceptional circumstances, students with a GPA of may be considered for short term programs only on the advice of the Head of The Department of International Studies. Students must require credit points towards their MQ degree for their participation in this program Priority will be given to students undertaking German as a compulsory unit in their degree such as students enrolled in a Bachelor of International Studies, students currently enrolled in a degree with a language major at. Students eligibility will be assessed according to the guidelines in the Student Mobility Policy. Students will be selected to participate in the program based on academic merit, references and personal statement Students enrolled in non-award programs are not eligible to participate in the short term programs Language students in their first year may participate in an in-country unit without having fulfilled the 18cp requirement on the following conditions: They are enrolled in a Bachelor degree program at Macquarie They are enrolled in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 units for their chosen language They obtain a recommendation from the Department of International Studies They are currently enrolled in the intermediate level (200 level) of their chosen language and the short program in which they are participating is one that has been specifically designed for intermediate students (200 level credit) The program offered is specifically established for a group of students who do not comply with the regular policy. If this is the case, it will be made clear in the documentation about the program Timing and Duration of Program The program will run for 3 weeks from 6 th July to 27 th July Students must arrive on 6 th July and will depart Essen on 27 th July. Students must be present for the entirety of the course, including the whole of the first and last days. Assignment and Assessment Attendance at all classes is mandatory. Students will be presented with a certificate at the
4 conclusion of the course. Credit Students participating in the course will be enrolled at Macquarie in GMN 299 or GMN362 depending on their language level (3 credit points). All students must be enrolled into the unit to receive this credit. Standard tuition fees (HECS or full fee) for the enrollment are payable to Macquarie. Please note the cost of enrolment at Macquarie is not included in the program logistics fee. Students cannot enrol themselves into the unit until they have been accepted into the program and a waiver has been entered. Grades will be recorded as satisfactory or fail and, provided students pass, will not affect their GPA. Mobility Scholarships Eligible students participating in the program will receive a Macquarie mobility scholarship. Mobility scholarships are intended to assist students in participating in student mobility programs. While the scholarships will assist in meeting program expenses, they are not intended to cover all costs and cannot be processed on demand. Grants are processed after the predeparture session, close to the start date of the overseas program. Applicants will need to be able to meet the costs of the program independently of the mobility scholarship. Students do NOT need to apply for the mobility scholarship separately. Students accepted into the program will are elgibile for the scholarship. Further details will be provided to successful applicants.
5 OS Help In the event that you should require additional financial assistance, the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) offers loans to assist Australian students undertake some of their study towards their undergraduate degree overseas. The scheme is known as OS-HELP. See further information on this link Eligible students can collect hard copy OS-Help applications from Campus Well-Being Support Services Lincoln Building (C8A) Level 2. Please note that OS-Help applications are not guaranteed and students should not reply on this money as a source of funding for their program. Successful applicants can expect to receive their payment on or close to the start of their overseas program. Payments cannot be processed on demand. Accommodation Participants will be accommodated in the Bildungshotel Essen about a 10 minute walk from the University. Students will stay in single rooms. Double bedrooms are not available. Meals are not provided. During the week (Monday to Friday) students will be able to buy lunch at the Mensa (canteen) and snacks in the cafeteria of the University at discounted prices. Rooms are available from 6th July at 10:00am to 27 th July at 10:00am. The accommodation will include private bathroom with a shower and a toilet, TV, refrigerator, bed linen, a pillow and two towels will be provided. A cafeteria is located in the hostel; washing machine and tumble dryer are available as well as access to kitchen facilities. Fees and Costs To apply to participate in the program, all students must submit an application to Macquarie International via the online application system.
6 There is an application fee of $75 to apply for any short-term program. This fee must be received by the application deadline, and must be paid either in person at the cashier s office or via internet bank transfer (please see below for further details). Successful students will also be required to cover the following costs: Logistics fee to Macquarie (see below for an explanation of this fee) Tuition feen (HECS) for the residential language unit at Macquarie (GMN 299 or GMN 362) Airfare (price subject to change depending on time of booking) Students must not purchase airfares or make travel arrangements until they have been formally accepted by Essen. Living expenses for the duration of the program. The logistic fee for the Essen 2014 program is yet to be finalised. This will not be finalised until after students have applied and been accepted. The fee for the 2013 program was $850 (approx. 663 Euros). Please note that the 2013 fee is a guideline only and is subject to change for This fee includes: Accommodation for the duration of the program in a single room Teaching material Entrance and guide feesfor the offered excursions Free internet access at the university Free use of the University library All students accepted into the program will be required to pay the logistics fee in May (approximately) Further information on the logistic fees payment process will be sent by to successful candidates. Note: For cancellations made after June 1 st 2014 no fees are refundable.
7 How to Pay Relevant Fees Application Fee (75 AUD) can be paid in two ways: 1) Internet transfer The details for an internet transfer are as follows: Bank Name National Australia Bank Name of Account BSB Number Account Number Should you choose this method, please ensure to enter into the 'reference' field of the transfer "Exchange: your surname". This will greatly assist the finance department in recognising your payment in the system. 2) Pay in person at the cashier's office The Cashiers Office is located on the ground floor in the Lincoln Building adjacent to the Student Enquiry Service. It is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays and the short Christmas break). Credit cards, EFTPOS and cheques are accepted at the Cashiers counter. Should you choose this option, please clearly indicate to the staff member the same reference details as above: Exchange + your surname + short term program application fee. Whichever payment method you choose, please submit a copy of the payment confirmation either to me by or in hard copy at the reception desk, Campus Wellbeing, (entrance off Wally's Walk). You can log out and log back in to finish it at a later date if necessary, but please remember to submit it by the deadline. Application deadline Student applications need to be submitted online to the Student Exchange Team by Sunday 23rd h March Notes for International Students International students must still comply with Australian visa conditions for class attendence and pass rates whilst overseas general requirements for international students, as dictated by the ESOS Act, must still be met. For more information please visit International students are permitted to travel home before and/or after their program. It is recommended that international students check with the German Embassy whether a visa is required for their stay in Germany.
