The city offers a rich and diverse cultural landscape with numerous concerts, operas, theatres and museums ranging from collections of historical instruments to a very lively, innovative circle of soloists, ensembles and orchestras. The Hamburg Conservatory, an integral part of music life in Hamburg, is sponsored by the Hamburg Ministry of Culture. Management and teaching staff have long-established links to German music colleges, Hamburg s top orchestras and the Hamburg State Opera. We turn your love of music into a career. At the Conservatory, you will study in a personal atmosphere with a curriculum tailored to meet your needs. In addition to individual lessons in your principal subject, activities include chamber music, participation in choir and orchestra, opportunities to perform, as well as interact with German and international students, and professional circles. The International Academic Year is a perfect way to start music studies, to prepare for a future entrance examination or further enhance an existing degree with the intention of preparing for an audition. This is a preparatory course with a simplified application procedure, without a personal entrance examination, and without an age limit. All new students will be welcomed in their respective native language and will be given assistance in dealing with their new surroundings in Germany. In addition, students are invited to attend our»german Language Study Programme«with language classes ranging from a beginner s course for those without any previous knowledge to level B2. The International Academic Year The International Academic Year at the Hamburg Conservatory is a two semester preparatory course in your principal study subject (instrument, vocal, conducting, composition). It is designed for applicants from abroad who want an initial experience studying music in Germany or students with a degree who want to improve their artistic skills. German language classes are an integral part of this programme; previous knowledge is not necessary. THE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC YEAR PROGRAMME INCLUDES: 40 weeks of tuition from 1 October to 30 September Weekly 1 hour lesson in principal subject (instrument or vocal) Weekly 30-minute lesson in other subjects, e.g. piano accompaniment, chamber music, band training, for vocalists speech training, for pianists chamber music. Alternatively an additional principal or secondary subject. TEACHING STAFF Most of our teaching staff are members of prestigious Hamburg orchestras, including the NDR Symphony Orchestra, the Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the Ensemble Resonanz, the Hamburg State Opera or professors from German music colleges. You will find a list of our teachers online. SUPPORT Our support starts once you receive confirmation that you have been accepted for the International Academic Year even before you leave your home country. We will be of assistance helping you find accommodation prior to your arrival, and with entry formalities. Our airport pickup service will meet you at the airport on arrival and bring you to your flat. There is always someone who speaks your language to assist you during your entire stay. Our support helps make your first few days and weeks in Germany easier. GERMAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE Our German Language Study Programme is an integral part of our offer for foreign students. You will learn how to speak German in daily life from day one. In addition, you will become familiar with specialist musical terms. We will assess your German language skills and place you in the correct class according to your knowledge of the language. CULTURAL PROGRAMME In addition to your studies you will have the opportunity to become acquainted with cultural life in Germany. Whether a group excursion to the Christmas Oratorio by J.S. Bach in the St. Michaelis Kirche, including an in-depth introduction of the piece, a Hamburg Day, with a tour of the world famous collection of instruments in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, a visit to the composers quarters, or a study trip with a concert performance outside of Hamburg, as well as free admission to all concerts given by the Hamburg Conservatory. ACCOMMODATION, HEALTH INSURANCE We will try to place you in student housing or in private accommodations. Depending on the size and facilities of your accommodations you will have to calculate an additional 250.00 to 500.00 a month for rent. In Germany, health insurance is compulsory for students. Together with our contract partner, the Hanse Merkur Insurance, we have put together a health, accident and liability insurance that is already included in our complete price. FINAL CONCERT AND CERTIFICATE The International Academic Year comes to an end at the end of September with a festive public concert and the personal presentation of your certificate.
APPLICATION Your application must include the following documents: A school-leaving certificate to permit university entry or proof of completed studies For applicants from China: at least secondary graduation certificate Curriculum Vitae (with your photograph) Recording (audio or video file, for example mp3 or mp4, youtube link or youku.com link) with duration of at least 15 minutes consisting of pieces from different stylistic periods. If you are applying for vocal as a principal subject your recording will have to include at least one piece in German. Application fees are payable together with the application. Details are given below. Application deadline is 1 June of a given year for studies starting in the following October. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND START OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR The Hamburg Conservatory decides whether a candidate will be admitted on the basis of the documents they have provided, in particular the audio or video files. A personal entrance exam is not scheduled. We will give you the results of your application by 15 June. In case of acceptance please transfer the registration fee. Details are given below. The academic year begins on 1 October. Please note that if you live in student housing you will not be able to move in before this date. We will inform you about the exact date of the opening ceremony and the orientation day in good time prior to your arrival.
