1 4.56 Music The Majors Degrees: BA and BS Requirements: BA: 40 hours, in addition to required ensembles, including specified areas of applied study. See the Catalog and Music Handbook for details. BS: 60 hours in addition to required ensembles, including specified areas of applied study. See Catalog and Music Handbook for details. Teacher Certification: Students who complete the BS MUS major with an emphasis in Music Education will obtain teacher certification in MUS for grades K-12 in Instrumental Music Education or Vocal/Choral Music Education. Music Education students complete 54 hours in music plus ensembles, plus the certification courses required by the Education Department and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Vocal/Choral students may get an instrumental music extension, and Instrumental students may get a vocal/choral extension. However, that rarely can be done in four years. The music department handbook is a detailed and helpful document to aid a music major or minor in navigating the courses of study necessary within the department and it is highly recommended that a student wishing to pursue music study contact the music department Administrative Associate for a copy of the handbook. Academic Core Curriculum Some Level Two Core Curriculum courses involve music faculty members and music subject matter. CTI 233, Christian Hymnody, is double listed as MUS 344. Things Advisors Need to Know 1. The Music Department welcomes all students to participate in the ensembles, applied lessons (private or class), and course offerings of the department. The following will help advisors of non-majors who wish to pursue any or all of these options: a. To Enroll in an Ensemble: The student should enroll for the appropriate number listed in the Catalog or Class Schedule. The course number may be repeated as required. The student may enroll for most of the ensembles without an entrance audition. However, in some cases, to maintain enrollment in the course the student must complete an audition. Such auditions for new members of the ensemble will normally be required at or near the beginning of the semester. Entrance auditions are required for the following ensembles prior to enrollment: Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Jazz Band, Advanced Handbell Choir, and

2 4.56 various chamber instrumental ensembles (course numbers vary). Students MUST be admitted to these ensembles PRIOR to enrolling in them. Most auditions are held during the orientation period.

3 4.57 b. To Enroll in Applied Study: The numbers for private applied study at the general level are MUS 211 (1 credit hour of study) or MUS 212 (2 credit hours of study). Applied study at the advanced level (MUS 411 and 412) is granted by the Music Department. The particular area of applied study is designated by the section letters listed in the Class Schedule (e.g. PN for Piano, VO for Voice, etc.). The course may be repeated as required. New students may enroll for applied study without an audition, but one will be required before a teacher is assigned. Class instruction (MUS 111) is also offered in piano, voice, and guitar. Placement in class study or private study will be adjusted as necessary once the audition has been completed at the start of study. 2. The programs of study in the music major are: Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Science in Music with selected emphases in Music Performance, Church Music, Theory or Composition, Music Education (Instrumental or Vocal/Choral), or Music History. Students wishing to pursue any of the music major programs (or a program combining music with that of another discipline) should be assigned a Music advisor, or at least acquire a Music professor as a secondary advisor, since course scheduling is somewhat complex. The following is offered to provide non-music advisors with some needed guidance should an advisor from the Music Department not be immediately available. The Music Department (ext. 5204) welcomes questions and inquiries from students and faculty advisors. 3. Each program of study is based on the principle of a basic core of music study (theory, ear training, history/literature, conducting, applied study, and ensembles/performance labs) that is common to all students culminating in upper division courses of the selected emphasis. 4. GENERAL OUTLINE OF THE BS MUSIC CURRICULA: Academic Core Curriculum (38 hours). All students will follow the prescribed Academic Core Curriculum program of the College. BS Music students may choose the language requirement, the multicultural alternative, or a fourth cluster area.

4 4.58 Non-Music Electives (26 hours). Non-music electives can involve a major or strong emphasis in another discipline or a sampling of courses from various departments across the campus. Music Education majors take their professional education courses in this block. Music Courses (60 hours-54 for Music Education). The music courses include Music Theory, Ear Training, Keyboard Harmony, Music History/Literature, Conducting, Principal Applied Area, Keyboard or Secondary Applied Area, Music Electives (some stipulations), and Music Ensembles/Performance Labs (vocal and instrumental--not counted in the 124 hours). 5. GENERAL OUTLINE OF THE B.A. MUSIC CURRICULUM: Academic Core Curriculum (38 hours). All students will follow the prescribed Academic Core Curriculum program of the College, including the language requirement. Non- Music Electives (46 hours). Non-music electives can involve a major or strong emphasis in another discipline or a sampling of courses from various departments across the campus. Music Courses (40 hours). The music courses include Music Fundamentals/Music Theory, Ear Training, Keyboard Harmony, Music History/Literature, Conducting, Principal Applied Area, Keyboard or Secondary Applied Area, Music Electives (some stipulations), and Music Ensembles (vocal and instrumental--not counted in the 124 hours). 6. It is recommended that the FROSH music major (or FROSH seriously contemplating such a major) enroll in the following courses in the Fall: MUS 120, MUS 121, MUS 211 (Principal Applied), a primary ensemble (determined by the principal area of study e.g. a vocal major will take choir) and secondary ensemble (in a contrasting area e.g. a vocal major might take band as a secondary ensemble. If there are questions about the secondary ensemble the advise of the Department Advising Director for music should be sought. Spring courses include continuation of the ensemble and applied study and enrollment in MUS 130 and MUS 131 assuming first semester courses were passed successfully. A student who did not pass MUS 120 successfully will need to enroll in MUS Students who select Music as a second major may follow the academic core curriculum requirements for their primary major. If the student s primary major is within either the BA or BS degree s/he may obtain a second major in Music by

5 4.58 fulfilling at least the BA major requirements for Music (40 hours). Students, of course, may elect a larger music program.
