2 Huntingdonshire Music School Huntingdonshire Music School has been established since 1966 providing individually tailored and joint practical and theory tuition by professional music tutors. We also run a range of groups and ensembles of varying standards which are open to all. All tutors are CRB checked in accordance with the current child protection legislation of Huntingdonshire Regional College. Many of our past students credit Huntingdonshire Music School as being the platform for their musical careers. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn and perform in a friendly, relaxed and fun environment. 4 Huntingdonshire Music School Association Bursary Scheme Introduction Music education is a costly business. Also making music as a hobby is similarly expensive. Tuition at the Music School is run at cost and is reasonably priced to be competitive. However, we acknowledge that it could be beyond the reach of many prospective students. Code of practice for Bursary Management Bursaries will be managed by a sub-committee comprising the Chairman and Treasurer of HuMSA and the Director of the Music School. This is to maintain confidentiality. The Music School Director, staff and HuMSA management committee members will actively seek bursary funding opportunities. Any conditions which may be imposed by the donor(s) are to be recorded and strictly adhered to. No student may receive more than a single bursary from or via HuMSA in a single year and the student must disclose any other bursaries which he/she is receiving. Bursaries are not paid until the student can demonstrate more than one term s commitment to learning and practising. This normally means that bursaries will be paid in the third term of each year of learning. Bursaries are paid for a single year only but students can re-apply in subsequent years. All bursaries are conditional on maintaining good attendance at Music School lessons and in maintaining adequate practice on the instrument. All bursaries are paid to the College to the credit of the individual student s fee account, not direct to the student. Bursaries are awarded to students who are taking instrumental lessons at Huntingdonshire Music School This means that bursaries are not awarded to those who are only participating in ensembles and/or theory and aural classes. Teachers will be required to countersign the form to confirm attendance and progress. Current Bursaries, note that this sub-section will be updated regularly: Huntingdon Freemen. This charity provides a subsidy for students who are under the age of 16 and live within the ancient town boundaries. Essentially this is the A14 to the West and North, the river Ouse to the South and the A141 to the East. No detailed reason is required on the application. Students aged taking new examinations may also be eligible for funding of one terms instrumental lessons. through the Huntingdonshire Regional College, please ask at reception for more details.

6 Music in Schools We also provide music lessons and activities in schools across Cambridgeshire. Making music in the early and primary years increases listening and concentration skills and enhances a child s ability to discriminate between sounds. In addition to the musical benefits, this improves phonetic awareness and helps to develop language and literacy skills. There is also a positive impact on spatial reasoning, which is linked to mathematical thinking and on physical co-ordination, which supports handwriting skills. Music making in small groups promotes teamwork and the development of leadership skills, while pupils confidence can be enhanced if they are given opportunities to perform. To apply for lessons within your school, please complete the application form within this leaflet and hand it to the school receptionist. Primary Schools Instruments being taught include: flute, clarinet, saxophone, singing, piano, violin, guitar, recorder and drums. Lessons are provided in small groups of 3 or more for beginners, however individual tuition is available for those students who have already had prior lessons or who are at a more advanced level. Price list: 30 minutes From 65 per term. *Individual lessons are available, fees can be found on page 3 *Some instruments are available to hire from the Music School, subject to availability. Lessons will be provided each week at your child s school, with a minimum of 10 lessons being delivered per term.

7 Music Technology BTEC LEVEL 2 & 3 NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN MEDIA AND MUSIC TECHNOLOGY Aimed at students who have achieved a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades A* C, these courses provide students with the opportunity to gain knowledge of all aspects of the music industry. If you are interested in understanding the roles of Major Music Moguls, creating musical compositions, or even running your own concerts, this course is the one for you. After successful completion of the course, it is expected that you will progress onto a Music Technology degree at University or into employment within the music industry. For more information visit

8 Huntingdonshire Music School Association Formed initially as a friends association many years ago the Huntingdonshire Music School Association was created and registered as a charity in 2006 to support the music school, such as providing help at concerts. All students and parent/guardians of under 18s, are members at no extra cost. So what do we do? Huntingdonshire Music School Association work to raise funding for bursaries for Music School students. We are fortunate in having a number of benefactors, including the Huntingdon Freemen s Charity. Each year we encourage students, and parents/guardians of students under 18, to apply in strict confidence for a bursary - usually the cost of one term s tuition. Application forms are available from the music department and we advise students of the details for each year, via Ledger Lines. We organise all the music school concerts and try to give as many students as possible the chance to play in front of an audience. We also purchase equipment, instruments and sheet music to support ensembles. We have organised Music School trips and are planning a return trip to Marburg (Germany) in Wertheim (Germany) / Disneyland Paris Austria Isle of Man Norfolk Marburg (Germany) These trips provide opportunities to explore the local sights and customs and to perform with local groups. They are a very hectic, eventful and good way of getting to know others at the music school. The association is run, for you, by the management committee. A group elected at the AGM.
