Byrnes Editor YOUNG DESIGNERS & TECHNICIANS 2002 by Elynmarie Kazle, VP Membership and Development The 2002 USITT Young Designers & Technicians Awards were presented at the Awards Banquet on 16 February 2002 at the conclusion of the 2002 Annual Conference & Stage Expo in New Orleans. Students and recent graduates from nine schools were represented this year. All the participants in the Young Designers & Technicians Awards are nominated by USITT members and their portfolios are evaluated by a panel of experts, this year consisting of William J. Byrnes, Dennis Dorn, Alexandra Bonds, Laura Love, Rachel Keebler, Lisa Westkaemper, Stephanie Young, Elizabeth Lewandowski, Sylvia Hillyard Pannell, Richard Pilbrow, Charles E. Williams, Craig Wolf and Zelma Weisfeld. Congratulations to this year s award winners featured here, and to the nearly forty exceptional designers and technicians who participated this year. IAN HUNTER CLEAR-COM INTERCOM SYSTEMS sound achievement award Mr. Hunter has worked at the Hall of Music Productions as a sound designer as well as rental systems technician in Lafayette, Indiana. He has also participated in the New Year s Eve telecast from Times Square and has spent the past three summers as the resident sound designer for the Tuacahn Center for the Arts on their summer musical series. He is currently working on developing a new course in Entertainment Control Technologies for his master s thesis project at Purdue University. The YD&T adjudicators commented that his portfolio was well organized and that his excellent paperwork was thorough and clear. One of Tim s schoolmates commented, He did an excellent job of being professional but keeping the fun part of the job alive. His skill of scanning the crowd for problems is definitely something I want to work to perfect. JOSHUA W. PEKLO KM FABRICS, INC. technical production award Josh graduates from Yale School of Drama in May 2002. Comments from the adjudicators included the following: Good solid presentation, excellent detail and was very informative. Drafting looked good. Curtain rigging project for The Birds looked good. BUERKI GOLDEN HAMMER scenic technology award Daniel graduated from University of Missouri, Kansas City in May of 2000. He has worked as the mechanics designer for the Missouri Repertory Theater where he implemented the Rep s computerized motion control system. His portfolio included his work on the Rep s productions of Machinal, The Philadelphia Story and Company. OLIVERA GAJIĆ ZELMA H. WEISFELD costume design & technology award Ms. Gajić graduates from University of Connecticut in May 2002. The adjudicators commented that her conceptual sketches were very strong and that her renderings were exceptional examples of beautiful communication of character. CARL KRYOLAN makeup design award Ms. Carl graduates from University of Minnesota, Duluth in May 2002. Her portfolio demonstrated a flair for makeup design, control of the necessary craft aspects, concerted research efforts and successful outcomes. NATHAN HEVERIN ROSE BRAND award for scene design Mr. Heverin s portfolio included highly imaginative designs with great attention to detail. He graduated in May 2000 from New York University and his work can be seen in productions such as The Voice of the Turtle by John van Druten (November 2001, Mint Theatre Company) and The Good Theif by Lucy Komisar (March 2002, Jose Quintero Theatre). CONNOLLY BARBIZON award for lighting design Ms. Connolly graduates from Carnegie Mellon University in May 2002. She has already put her young professional skills to work at the Oregon Cabaret Theater, The Rogue Valley Opera and at the Actors Theater (in Talent, Oregon) as well as numerous university lighting assignments.
