1 Program Overview The 2016 Summer Seminar for High School Juniors takes place from August 1 13 and offers students from all over the country the opportunity to visit Ashland and experience all aspects of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's operation. For two exciting weeks, 65 talented young people between their junior and senior years are thrust into a rigorous schedule which includes playgoing, forums and workshops as members of the OSF Company share their art, skill, insight and theatrical expertise with the group. Students gain insight into the workings of a successful repertory theatre company by attending forums and workshops on such topics as theatre administration, fundraising, stage management, costume and properties construction, sound, lighting and scenic design, Shakespeare scansion, audition skills, text analysis, movement and voice for the stage. Students also attend 10 plays in the Festival's repertory (Great Expectations, Hamlet, Richard II, Roe, Vietgone, Timon of Athens, Twelfth Night, The Winter's Tale, The Wiz and The Yeoman of the Guard), develop projects with other students addressing the challenges facing the arts on a national level and make connections with others who care deeply about theatre. Student Requirements Students must submit a completed application no later than April 1, This four-part application requires thought and self-examination and includes recommendations from three teachers or adults who know (but are not related to) the applicant. While an extensive theatrical resume is not an admission requirement, students must have a demonstrated interest in the arts and a background in school or community theatre. Students must be able to study and memorize complex text, function independently and adhere to the rigorous Seminar schedule. Active physical participation is required in workshops such as Stage Combat, Creating an Ensemble, Renaissance Dance, Exploring Shakespeare s Language and more. Tuition The program fee of $2,350 includes tickets to 10 plays and other events and room and board at Southern Oregon University. Tuition assistance is available to families with a demonstrated financial need. Details are available once applicants are accepted into the Seminar. College Credit Two theatre elective credits are available through Southern Oregon University for an additional fee. Details are available after students are accepted into the Seminar.
