Welcome In summer 2016 Imperial will be welcoming the second cohort to its Global Summer School. Our two-week residential experience in the heart of London will unite the highest achieving students from all corners of the globe for a rewarding insight into all that Imperial has to offer. We re the only UK university to focus exclusively on science, engineering, medicine and business, making it possible for participants to fully immerse themselves in a truly specialist environment currently ranked eighth in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2015 16. As one of the top research universities in the world, we re home to many world leading staff. Summer School participants will have the chance to work with a number of them up close as they embark on a challenging academic programme, which is designed to take their subject knowledge to the next level. This is balanced with a packed schedule of social activities, creating an unforgettable experience in one of the world s most exciting cities. I particularly enjoyed how the lectures that we were given linked so well to the experimental work we did and the presentations and projects. SOPHIE, BELGIUM Study Expert tuition At the heart of our Summer School is an intensive academic programme. This will give participants the chance to increase their subject knowledge and improve their practical skills, with the support of our experienced academics, researchers and mentors. Focused, expert tuition in our world class facilities will stretch the students academically, helping them to push through new boundaries in their subject field and gain a valuable insight into life at one of the world s top universities. Team work In the first week all students will join one of the following learning streams: Engineering Medicine and Life Sciences Physical Sciences CAREERS ADVICE AND GUIDANCE SEMINARS In addition to the academic programme, students will also be given an opportunity to attend a series of seminars designed to help them with their career planning and university applications. For example, sessions might cover: career planning UCAS and applying to universities in the UK how to write a personal statement interview skills applying to medicine in the UK. Each stream incorporates a mixture of practical activities, lectures and seminars and a high level of practical laboratory work to develop knowledge and skills in a specific subject area. In the second week, students will work in teams to apply what they have learnt to a real-world problem relevant to the challenges faced by industry. Teams will present their solutions at a final showcase event, with some fantastic prizes available to reward the best ideas.
Live Accommodation in the heart of London Over 90% of Imperial undergraduates choose to live in our halls of residence in their first year; our Summer School students will get the chance to experience living in university accommodation, as they will be allocated a place in a hall on our South Kensington Campus: Students will typically share a twin room with another Summer School student of the same gender. All rooms will be in single-sex clusters. The safety of our students is of paramount importance. An experienced team of Summer School staff will provide support and care around the clock: Students stay in secure halls of residence on campus all halls have swipe card or fob entry, CCTV and 24-hour manned security offices. Residential staff are available in all halls. Students are supervised on Summer School social activities and outings the option for students to participate in unsupervised activities is available subject to parental permission being obtained in advance. Key members of staff hold qualifications in child protection. I met new awesome people and experienced student life in London. Both weeks expanded my knowledge tremendously and helped me to choose the right course for university. AINUR, KAZAKHSTAN The Summer School will be action packed so we provide three nutritious meals per day to make sure our students keep their energy up for the tasks ahead. We can cater for a range of diets with advance notice.
Two Royal Parks, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, are just minutes away from our campus Discover South Kensington Our stateof-the-art sports centre Ethos, which includes a gym and swimming pool, is on site and will be available for Summer School student use
Enjoy Make the most of your time in London Like the real Imperial student experience, the Summer School isn t all about work we ve also designed a packed schedule of excursions and activities to make sure that students use their time in one of the world s most exciting cities to the full. The evening and weekend activity programme will include a range of activities, such as: day trips to other cities such as Oxford or Cambridge, or visits to nearby attractions like Harry Potter World a wide range of sports activities sightseeing tours of London a visit to a West End musical producing a talent show visits to museums and galleries. Students will be accompanied to social activities by our fantastic Residential Mentors who are current Imperial students, enabling Summer School participants to find out first-hand what it s like to study here. Our Mentor made the whole experience really enjoyable and she was really good at explaining anything that may not have been fully understood. MATHILDE, UK
Apply Applications for the Summer School open on 6 January 2016 Students applying to the Summer School should be able to demonstrate the following qualities: enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and mathematics excellent academic ability demonstrated by a majority of predicted or received A* B grades at GCSE level or equivalent, with a minimum of grade A in maths and science strong English language skills clear motivation for attending the Summer School. Students enrolling in the Imperial Global Summer School will be required to be 16 years of age on or before 31 August 2016, and should not be over 17 years of age at any point during their Summer School session. For example, a student enrolled in the Summer School from 8 20 August should either be already between 16 and 17 years of age, or have their sixteenth birthday before 31 August 2016, and not reach the age of 18 years on or before the 20 August 2016. The cost of one residential Summer School programme in 2016 is 3,950 per student. This all-inclusive * fee covers: cost of all tuition, course materials and certificates guest lectures full board accommodation including all meals use of selected facilities on the South Kensington Campus travel to and from activities full social programme including weekend excursions meet and greet transfer service at Gatwick and Heathrow airports on the first day of the Summer School drop off service at Gatwick and Heathrow airports on the last day of the Summer School.
