Vittorio Lmpugnni s urn design concept tkes the city-lock structure of the nineteenth century s point of deprture. Insted of the solid msonry wlls with punctured fcdes tht often ccompny this urn plnning precept, Wiel Arets, the designer of the dominnt high-rise nd one of the six locks, proposed neutrl, trnsprent uilding envelope (see p. 55). To fford pssers-y nd residents who live cross from the uilding it of domestic tmosphere despite the glzed fcde, in coopertion with fcde firm, Arets office developed solution in which curtins ecome key design element. A reinterprettion of the closed-cvity fcde, these hermeticlly seled, highly insulted elements re the result of n intensive series of tests: ir from which moisture hs een extrcted is pumped through the interstitil spce. Thus, in contrst to doule-skin fcdes with vents dmitting mient ir, here no dirt or dust cn penetrte the elements, nd condenstion cnnot form in the interstitil spce. Accordingly, the glss surfces lining the interstitil spce do not hve to e clened, nd the reflectnce of the solr protection within it will remin intct for mny yers to come. Here, curtins with highly reflective luminium vpour coting re employed for the first time s integrted solr shding nd glre control. When the curtins re open, seen from the interior, despite module thickness of out 00 mm, the fcde seems like thin memrne. As soon s the sun shines on the fcde, the curtins close nd the exterior ppernce of the uilding is trnsformed. Inside, the curtin theme mkes the gretest impression in the high-rise s doule-height loy, s well s in the conference rooms nd the cfeteri. Although the entire f-
58 Allinz Hedqurters in Wllisellen 0 5 cde is glzed, in figurtive sense it hs its origins in stone: in homge to the Brcelon Pvilion nd s concession to the coherence of the district s structures, the onyx pttern printed on the glss gives the glzed curtin fcde hpticl, monolithic qulity nd dds new dimension to the interply etween the texture of the curtins nd the reflections of the smooth glss skin: the lyers crete sense of depth. In ddition to the fcde, the textured suspended ceiling, replete with florl s relief, is n importnt contriution to the sensul tmosphere of the interiors. Aside from functioning s coustic ceiling, equipped with clipped-on copper pipes, it serves s rdint cooling ceiling nd is n integrl component of the hyrid-cooling ceiling. Copper pipes in the interstitil spce precondition the ir nd, consequently, lso the respective concrete decks which constitute the thermlly ctive lyer ove them.
