APPLICATION PROCESS STEP BY STEP Metropolia has only one admission per year. The application period is always in the spring and the studies will always start in the autumn. The application period for studies starting in autumn 2010 is from 11 January 2010 to 12 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time (+ 2 hrs GMT). 1. Check the nationwide education offering at www.admissions.fi => Degree Programmes. 2. Choose 1-4 degree programmes to which you want to apply. Please note that applicants can fill in only one application per application period! 3. Decide your order of preference for the degree programmes. Please note that this order defines the degree programme where the applicant will be admitted and therefore, it is absolutely crucial this order reflects your true wishes! 4. Check the eligibility requirements and application instructions of each degree programme before your start the application process because the requirements/instructions may vary between the degree programmes. 5. Have all the required certificates with you when you fill in your application because the joint application system will ask you to give information regarding your educational background. 6. Fill in and send the online application at www.admissions.fi by 12 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time. The application service guides and helps you to fill in the application form. Make sure that all the information you have given is true and correct before sending the application. Wrong or false information may cause major problems in the application process! 7. Print a copy of the application form for yourself for future reference and memorize your application number as you will need it in order to identify yourself during the application process. 8. Take copies of all the required certificate copies (plain photocopies are enough except with TOEFL) and write your applicant number on each certificate copy. Deliver all the required certificate copies to the Admissions Office of the polytechnic/uas of your first choice so that they are received by 19 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time. Late certificate copies will not be accepted. Please note that certificate copies will not be returned to applicants. Never send any original documents (certificates or their translations)! 9. Keep your contact information always up to date, because otherwise the Admissions Office will not be able to reach you, which in the worst case may result in your application being rejected. Check your e-mail frequently in case the Admissions Office should need to contact you, and wait patiently for the eligibility decision, which will be posted to you in mid March. 10. If you want to change your application data, e-mail the Admissions Office of your first-choice polytechnic/uas. The order of preference chosen in the application is binding and cannot be altered after the application deadline. Please remember to inform your applicant number when contacting the Admissions Office. 20

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Some polytechnic/uass use discretionary admission if the skills and knowledge of an ineligible applicant are sufficient. However, Metropolia does not, which means that if an applicant does not meet all the eligibility requirements, his or her application will be rejected with no exception. The eligibility decision will be made by the first-option polytechnic/uas on behalf of all the application options (unless the polytechnic/uas uses discretionary admission). All applicants who have demonstrated their eligibility in the required way will be invited to the entrance examination(s). There are three requirements that applicants must fulfil in order to be eligible to apply: 1. Basic education requirement (all applicants): Applicants must have a degree/qualification, which gives eligibility for higher education in the awarding country (normally a general or vocational upper secondary level certificate awarded after 12 years of schooling). Please note that it is not possible to apply with a higher education degree (e.g. Bachelor s or Master s Degree). More information can be found e.g. at www.admissions.fi => Application Practicalities => Eligibility or at www.unesco.org/iau/onlinedatabases/. Only final certificates will be accepted. Statements of results, result slips, scratch cards, provisional or temporary certificates etc. are not considered to be final certificates and are therefore unacceptable. In West Africa, for example, it may take even several years to get the final certificate but it does not change the fact that the applicant is not eligible to apply before he or she is able to provide a copy of the final certificate when applying. Applicants applying with a non-finnish qualification (completed outside Finland), with a Finnish competence-based vocational qualification or with a Finnish Matriculation Examination completed before 1990 must deliver copies of their final certificates to the Admissions Office of the first-option polytechnic/uas by 19 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time. However, this does not apply to EU/EEA citizens completing foreign qualification during the spring of application. Please read the more detailed instructions in chapter Required Certificates. 2. English language qualification requirement (non-eu/eea citizens only): One of the following English language qualifications is required from applicants who are non-eu/eea citizens and not applying with a qualification completed in Finland (only the qualifications below will be accepted): IELTS, minimum score academic level 6.0 (www.ielts.org) TOEFL, minimum score 550 paper-based test / 79 80 internet-based test (www.toefl.com) Finnish National Certificate of Language Proficiency minimum skills level 4 in English (www.oph.fi/english => Mobility => Testing Language Skills) Both TOEFL and IELTS test results are valid for two years. The National Certificate of Language Proficiency does not have a set date of validity. TOEFL score results are only accepted directly from the Educational Testing Service (Metropolia s TOEFL code is 3804). In addition, upper secondary school education in English completed in Great Britain, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand or Bachelor s or Master s degree completed in English in one of these countries is also accepted as a demonstration of sufficient English language skills (education completed outside the above-mentioned countries will not be accepted under any circumstances). The English language qualification must be delivered to the Admissions Office of the first-option polytechnic/uas by 19 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time. Please read the more detailed instructions in chapter Required Certificates. 21

3. Finnish language skill requirement (in Nursing and Social Services only): When applying to Metropolia s Degree Programmes in Social Services and Nursing, applicants are required to have a minimum of basic level 2 (A2 in the Common European Framework) in Finnish language skills in order to be eligible to apply. Applicants are not required to send any certificates regarding their Finnish language skills when applying. In addition, all non-native applicants must participate in a Finnish language test during the entrance examination unless the language of their previous education is Finnish. REQUIRED CERTIFICATES Applicants are required to prove their eligibility with adequate certificate copies by the deadline; otherwise their applications will be automatically rejected. No exceptions can be made with this. Before sending certificate copies, the applicant must write his or her applicant number on each certificate copy. Metropolia is not responsible if certificates cannot be identified due to a missing applicant number. Ordinary photocopies of the required certificates (TOEFL certificates, however, must be sent directly by the Educational Testing Service) must be sent by post or delivered in person to the Admissions Office of the first-option polytechnic/uas. Scanned or faxed copies will not be accepted. Late certificate copies will not be accepted but all the required documents must be received by the Admissions Office by the deadline. Certificate copies will not be returned to applicants. Non-EU/EEA citizens applying with a foreign qualification: Non-EU/EEA citizens applying with non-finnish qualification (completed outside Finland) are required to deliver the following certificate copies to the Admissions Office of the first-option polytechnic/uas by 19 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time: 1. Certificate copies of the final degrees/qualifications giving the eligibility to apply for higher education in the awarding country (only final certificates will be accepted; transcripts, statements of results, result slips, scratch cards or provisional or temporary certificates etc. are not considered to be final certificates). 2. Copies of officially certified translations if the original certificates are not in English, Finnish or Swedish (the translation must include the translator signature and stamp). 3. English language qualification (limited qualification options!). TOEFL score results are only accepted directly from the Educational Testing Service (Metropolia s TOEFL code is 3804) but with the other English language qualifications a plain photocopy is enough. PLEASE NOTE! Non-EU/EEA citizens who cannot provide copies of their final certificates by the deadline (e.g. applicants who cannot receive their final certificate or cannot complete their studies in time) are not eligible to apply. 22

EU/EEA citizens applying with a foreign qualification: EU/EEA citizens applying with non-finnish qualification (completed outside Finland) are required to deliver the following certifi c ate copies to the Admissions Office of the first-option polytechnic/uas by 19 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time. 1. 3. English language qualification if the applicant wishes to get an exemption from the English language test (more information in chapter Entrance Examinations under subheading English language test exemption ). TOEFL score results are only accepted directly from the Educational Testing Service (Metropolia s TOEFL code is 3804) but with the other English language qualifications a plain photocopy is enough. Graduates of spring 2010 are not required to send any school certificates by 19 February 2010. However, those who are entitled to get school performance points are required to confirm their final grades by delivering copies of the final grade certificates / predicted grades by 14 May 2010 (more information can be found in chapter School performance points ). The education must have been completed by 3 August 2010. Applicants applying with a Finnish qualification: Applicants applying with the following Finnish qualifications must deliver the following certificate copies to the Admissions Office of their first-option polytechnic/uas by 19 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time (applicants applying with other Finnish qualification do not need to send any certificate copies). 1. Copies of the Finnish Matriculation examinations completed before 1990 or of the competence-based vocational/further vocational qualifications (the competence-based education must be completed during the application period). 2. Graduates of spring 2010 are not required to send any school certificates by 19 February 2010 (except when applying with a competence-based qualification). However, those who are entitled to get school performance points are required to confirm their final grades by delivering copies of the final grade certificates / predicted grades by 14 May 2010 (more information can be found in chapter School performance points ). The education must have been completed by 3 August 2010. ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS Only those applicants, who have proved their eligibility as required will be invited to the entrance examination(s). Some Finnish polytechnics/uass co-operate by using the same entrance examination. This means that an entrance examination completed at one polytechnic/uas is accepted by another and if you are invited to the entrance examination of your first choice, your second option will also accept the result. Applicants will only be invited to the entrance examinations of their highest option in the same co-operating programme. A list of polytechnic/uas degree programmes that accept the results of each others entrance examination in the mentioned field of study can be found at http://www.admissions.fi => Application Practicalities => Selection or new students/entrance examinations => Co-operating degree programmes. 23

If a polytechnic/uas degree programme is not included in the list, it does not accept entrance examination results from any other polytechnic/uas, and the applicant has to attend the entrance examination of that polytechnic/uas. English language test exemption In Metropolia, the English language test exemptions are considered only in the Electronics and Environmental Engineering Degree Programmes! In other Metropolia s Degree Programmes the English language test is compulsory for all applicants. Applicants can be exempted from the English language test if they deliver one of the following English language qualifications (no other qualification will be accepted) to the Admissions Office of the first-option polytechnic/uas by 19 February 2010 at 4.15 p.m. Finnish time. IELTS minimum score academic level 6.0 (www.ielts.org) TOEFL minimum score 550 paper-based test/ 79 80 internet-based test (www.toefl.com) Finnish Matriculation Examination minimum grade C in the advanced level English Finnish IBexamination: minimum grade 4 in English Finnish Reifeprüfung examination: minimum grade 7 in English Finnish EB examination: minimum grade 6.00 6.95 in English Finnish National Certificate of Language Proficiency minimum skills level 4 in English (www.oph.fi/english => Mobility => Testing Language Skills) Both TOEFL and IELTS test results are valid for two years. The National Certificate of Language Proficiency does not have a set date of validity. TOEFL score results are only accepted directly from the Educational Testing Service (Metropolia s TOEFL code is 3804). In addition, upper secondary school education in English completed in Great Britain, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand or Bachelor s or Master s degree completed in English in one of these countries is accepted as demonstration of sufficient English language skills (education completed outside the above-mentioned countries will not be accepted under any circumstances). PLEASE NOTE! Some applicants are required to supply an English language qualification in order to be eligible to apply. If such applicants decide to take the English language test, they will nevertheless be required to supply such language qualification. Taking the test and providing language qualification are not alternatives the applicant can choose between. 24

Student selections will be made based on applicants admissions points and preference option order. Admission points In the following degree programmes, 50% of the applicants will be admitted on the basis of the combined points for previous school performance and the entrance examination, and the other 50% on the basis of the entrance examination only: Nursing Social Services The maximum total of admission points is 100. Preference option order in student selection The preference option order, which the applicant has given when applying, is binding after the application period has ended. Applicants cannot choose the place of admission between the degree programme options but applicants will be offered only one study place, which will be the highest preference option possible. Therefore, it is absolutely crucial that the preference option order reflects the applicant s true wishes. Applicants who are admitted will have all their lower-preference options automatically cancelled and cannot get admitted to them, even if they refused to accept the study place offered. Applicants who are not accepted to their first-option degree programme may still be admitted to any of their lower options. Applicants who have been admitted to a lower-option degree programme can enrol on a waiting list for some higher-preference degree programme. It is not possible to be on a waiting list of a lower option degree programme. Applicants who have not been admitted to any degree programme will be placed to the waiting list automatically. Applicants remain on the waiting lists until 17 August 2010. By this date applicants are either offered a study place from the waiting list or not. PLEASE NOTE! Original certificates will be checked if the applicant gets admitted, and admission is conditional until this has been completed. The polytechnic/uas may withdraw the admission if the applicant has given false information. ACCEPTING A STUDY PLACE To maintain the study place offered, the applicant must fill in and deliver an acceptance of a study place form so that it is received by the Admissions Office by 3 August 2010 at 4.15 pm Finnish time. The deadline is extremely strict and late acceptance forms cannot be accepted under any circumstances. With the acceptance of a study place form, applicants inform whether they do or do not accept the study place offered or wish to wait if they may perhaps be admitted from the waiting list to some other higherpreference degree programme. In addition, applicants are asked to notify whether they will register as present or absent for the academic year. Applicants can postpone the start of the studies by accepting the study place but registering as absent for the academic year. According to the one place per student provision, applicants can receive only one higher education study place per term (autumn term: 1 August 31 December, spring term: 1 January 31 July). The provision applies all Finnish higher education degree programmes taking part to the joint application system. PLEASE NOTE! Acceptance of a study place is binding and cannot be changed once it has been received by the polytechnic/uas. If the applicant fails to deliver the required forms as instructed by the deadline, the study place will be cancelled. 29

APPEALS The appeal process is created to ensure that the polytechnics/uass do not make any mistakes in student selections and that the decisions are made according to the student admission criteria. An applicant who thinks that the decision has not been made according to the student admission criteria should first contact the polytechnic/uas he/she has applied to. If the matter is not resolved, the student may appeal in writing to the executive board of the polytechnic/uas in question. Such an appeal must be made within 14 days from the time the applicant had the possibility of receiving information on student selection. It is not possible to make any exceptions with the student admission requirements. Applicant who did not fulfil all the eligibility and/or admission requirements cannot get admitted even if the reason the reason for failing to fulfil the requirements was beyond the applicant s control (e.g. difficulties in getting the required certificates or visas or personal circumstances such as illness, death in the family etc.).
