1 APPLICATION GUIDE TO MASTER S DEGREE PROGRAMMES AT HANKEN 2015 Hanken offers several two-year Master's Degree Programmes with instruction in English both in Helsinki and in Vaasa. If you hold a Bachelor's degree from a university or polytechnic you are welcome to apply. You find all admissions criterias and information about the application process in this guide. The application period: Application opens: 5 January 2015 Application deadline: 13 February 2015 (16:00 GMT +2) The APPLICATION FORM is available at: The basic admissions requirements for applying to a Master's Degree Programme at Hanken are: A completed Bachelor's degree and a sufficient background in economic sciences A GMAT or GRE test score (optional for applicants to the Master's Degree Programme in Intellectual Property Law) English proficiency All applicants also need to submit the required enclosures and follow the application process in order for their application to be processed. These requirements will be presented below in greater detail.

2 Required Bachelor's Degree In order to be eligible for admission the applicant must hold a Finnish bachelor's degree from a university or a polytechnic or an applicable foreign degree from a recognised university. The degree must be the equivalent of 180 ECTS credits or more, i.e. it must be a degree of at least three years of full time studies. Hanken reserves the right to decide whether or not a degree and/or university meet our requirements. Applicants who will graduate after the application deadline of 13 February 2015 (February, March, April, May, June, July) can apply for admission before having received their degree certificates. Admission will be conditional for successful applicants who have not received their degree certificate by the application deadline. Conditionally admitted applicants must submit an officially certified copy of their degree certificate and final transcript as soon as they have obtained them, however no later than 31 July 2015 at 16:00 (GMT +2). Conditionally admitted applicants have to send the officially certified copies of their degree certificate and final transcript directly to Hanken. If Hanken has not received the documents within the set time, the offer of admission will be withdrawn. Please note that this means that if you expect to receive your degree certificate after 31 July 2015 you cannot apply for admission to Hanken in 2015.

3 Programme Specific Requirements The applicant must have completed at least 60 ECTS credits in economic sciences, of which at least 30 ECTS must be within subjects relevant for the programme or the intended major subject so that the admitted students are able to start studies at advanced level. The requirements for each programme are listed below:

4 60 ECTS credits is the equivalent of one year of full-time studies. Economic sciences include for example accounting, corporate geography, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, information systems science, commercial law, management, marketing, statistics and supply chain management. Please note that this is not a comprehensive list of subjects that can be regarded as economic sciences. It will be decided case by case whether an applicant fulfils the requirement of previous studies in economic sciences or not. The evaluation of the relevance of the applicant's educational background is only done during the processing of the applications with the application and enclosures at hand. Please note that fulfilling the amount of ECTS credits required for a programme does not automatically lead to admission of the applicant. It will be decided case by case whether or not the applicant possesses the knowledge required for studies at advanced level. In special cases, an admitted student may be required to supplement his or her knowledge of the major subject or subjects relevant to the programme before taking a specific course or completing the whole programme. Information about such supplementary requirements is included in the acceptance letter. Programme tracks: Master's degree programme in Business and Management and Master's degree programme in Finance and Accounting Two of the offered Master's degree programmes offer specialization tracks within the programme. Applicants applying to these programmes (Master's degree programme in Business and Management; Master's degree programme in Finance and Accounting) need to be eligible for one or both tracks within the programme they are applying to. Applicants must place the available tracks in order of preference in the application. The order of preference marked in the application is binding and cannot be changed during the application process. The applicant will in the first place be considered for the track which the applicant has placed the highest in the order of preference, and in second hand for the track he or she has placed second in the order of preference. The admitted students gain admission to one track within the programme. The admitted applicants will be informed which track they have gained admission to in the admission result.

5 Language requirements Applicants who fulfil one of the criteria below are considered to fulfil the language requirements and are thus not obliged to take a language test: Applicants who have obtained a university or polytechnic degree with instruction completely in English. A separate certificate from the higher education institution is required if the information is not stated on the degree certificate or transcript. Applicants who have completed their school education in Finland or in another Nordic country (Sweden, Norway, Denmark or Iceland). An officially attested copy of the school leaving certificate or the matriculation examination certificate is required. Applicants who do not fulfil one of the above criteria must prove sufficient knowledge of English through one of the following tests: IELTS (International English Language Testing System, Academic): a minimum score of 6,5 is required. A photocopy of the test result should be included with the application. The results are valid for two years and test results older than this are not accepted. The test result must reach UAF no later than 13 February 2015 at 16:00 (GMT +2). TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): a minimum score of 92 in the internet based test or 580 in the paper based test. The test score report must be sent directly by Educational Testing Services (ETS) to University Admissions Finland (UAF) or its electronic equivalent needs to be made available to University Admissions Finland. When filling out the TOEFL registration form, please fill in UAF's institution code 3138 in the score report recipient field. The results are valid for two years and test results older than this are not accepted. The test result must reach UAF no later than 13 February 2015 at 16:00 (GMT +2). CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English): a minimum score of grade C. An applicant's copy of the test result is acceptable, since the results will be verified from the test organiser. Include your Candidate's ID (3 letters and 6 numbers) and secret code (4 numbers). If you do not have these codes, you can request them from the testing organisation. If the codes are unavailable, you should ask for the Statement of Results from Cambridge ESOL to be sent directly to University Admissions Finland. Test scores sent as attachments will not be accepted. Please note that only tests taken after 2005 will be accepted. The test result should be included in the application and must reach UAF no later than 13 February 2015 at 16:00 (GMT +2).

6 PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English): a minimum score of 62 is required. Test results for PTE Academic are typically available within 5 working days following the test session. Once you receive your test score send it to University Admissions Finland from your PTE account. Choose Finland as the 'Country', 'University Admissions Finland' as the 'Institution' and click 'Search'. Then select the university you want to send your results to and confirm your order. After this, UAF should have access to your test results within 48 hours. Be advised that online language test results will only be accepted from the test organiser. The score report must reach UAF no later than 13 February 2015 at 16:00 (GMT + 2). No other English proficiency tests are accepted. Please note that it is the applicant's responsibility to find out the language test dates and closing dates for registration. The language test procedure may take several months including registration for the test, taking the test and getting the results. Applicants are advised to take the test as early as possible in order to avoid trouble with fully booked test dates. You may have your language test result submitted to UAF as soon as you wish. UAF will store the test result and attach it with your FuniMa account once they process the first application from you. Language test results must be sent to University Admissions Finland by the application deadline. Test scores sent as attachments to an message are not acceptable. Please note that your language test score must be valid throughout the entire application period. This means that if your language test expires even 1 day before the final application deadline, your language test score will not meet the requirements. Please check the validity of your test score and make arrangements for a new language test well in advance, if necessary.

7 GMAT and GRE test The Master's Degree programme in Intellectual Property Law is the only programme for which a standardised admission test is optional. ALL other applicants for all other programmes must take either GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) or GRE (Graduate Record Examination, General Test) before 13 February The test score should be no lower than an overall score of 550 in the GMAT and an equivalent score for GRE. GRE scores will be converted to the GMAT scale and compared to the required GMAT minimum score of 550. The school may, however, admit applicants with lower scores in GMAT or GRE, based on the applicant's other application documents. All sections of the test can be taken into account in the student selection process, so applicants should complete all parts of the test. The official test score report must be sent to Hanken directly from the test organisation. The institutional GRE reporting code for Hanken is Applicants taking GRE General Test should use this code when registering for the test in order for the results to be sent to Hanken. There is no separate code for GMAT. When asked where the test results should be sent, applicants should choose Hanken School of Economics and then Master's Degree Programmes. GMAT and GRE are standardised admission tests that are widely used by Business Schools and Graduate Schools in admissions to master and doctoral programmes. The tests measure the applicants' verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills. Both tests can be taken at various test centres all over the world. For more information about the tests and finding a test centre closest to you please visit: mba.com (GMAT) and ets.org (GRE). In Helsinki, applicants can take GRE at the Prometric Regus Hämeentie Business Centre and GMAT at LAN Group Finland. Please note that it is the applicant's responsibility to find out the test dates and closing dates for registration for GMAT or GRE. The test procedure may take several months including registration for the test, taking the test and getting the results. Applicants are advised to take the test as early as possible in order to avoid trouble with fully booked test dates. Note that the test must be taken before the application deadline and that the results must be sent directly to Hanken by the testing agency. GMAT and GRE test results are valid for five years and Hanken does not accept score reports for tests taken over five years ago.

8 The Application Process Hanken uses the University Admissions Finland (UAF) application services for admission to the Master's Degree Programmes. University Admissions Finland (UAF) is a centralized application and processing service that provides service for eleven Finnish universities. UAF services are free of charge for applicants. University Admissions Finland processes all educational certificates, carries out credential evaluation and verifies language skills. If you are interested in applying for admission, you should: Create a user account on the UAF registration page: As soon as the application period begins, you can log on to your account and finish your application. Note that University Admissions Finland only accepts printed applications sent by mail. This means that your application form becomes an application only after you have printed it, signed it and sent it to University Admissions Finland's office together with the required enclosures. No attachments will be accepted.

9 The Application Process Step by Step 1. Read all of the information carefully. Make sure that you fulfil the admission requirements for the programme you are applying to and the language requirements. Since you can only apply to one Master's Degree Programme at Hanken per year it is important to familiarise yourself with the programmes on offer so that you can make an informed choice. 2. Book a time for the GMAT or GRE test and possible language tests. It is your responsibility to make sure that you take the test(s) well enough in advance for the test score reports to arrive in time. 3. Register a FuniMa account with University Admissions Finland (UAF). FuniMa works best with Mozilla Firefox. If you are using an old version of Mozilla Firefox, or some other browser, please try updating or changing it. You should also try using a different computer and operating system or a faster internet connection. Please note that FuniMa does not support Internet Explorer. If you have applied earlier years, you will need to create a FuniMa account and complete a new application form, collect the required enclosures again and submit the application documents to University Admissions Finland. You should be aware that certain document requirements may have changed from the previous application period. Please check the admission requirements before acquiring documentation. As well, remember to check the country-specific requirements (more info at 4. Start collecting the required enclosures in time. Make sure that you follow the guidelines and the country-specific requirements (more info at Incomplete applications will not be processed. 5. Log in to your UAF account and complete the application when the application period has started (5 January 2015). We recommend that you complete your application in the beginning of the application period in order to make sure that it arrives at UAF before the deadline. Write your UAF application form number on every document as well as on the lower left corner of the envelope. Please go through each step of the application form carefully. Once you have selected the degree on the basis of which you are applying and the method of indicating your language skills, and have answered all the questions, click on 'Continue'. The next page that appears is a summary page.

10 Please check that the information is correct, and complete the application form by clicking on the 'Save the Application Form' button at the bottom of the page. Please note that after you have saved the form you are no longer able to edit it. Once the application form has been saved it will be assigned an application form number. You must then print out the PDF, sign it and send it to UAF. The application form must reach UAF by the application deadline. If you have started an application draft but have not yet saved the application form, you should still be able to edit your educational background information. However, after you have saved the application form, information regarding the degree attached to that application will be locked and you can no longer edit it. You can always make changes to the personal information on your FuniMa account. 6. Send your printed and signed application form together with the required enclosures to UAF. The deadline is 13 February 2015 at 16:00 (GMT +2). Late applications will not be processed. If you do so, Hanken we mail the application to UAF with regular mail and we cannot take any responsibility for lost mail. 7. Check your (the one that you used on the application form) AND your UAF account regularly after you have sent your application. UAF will contact you via when they have pre-processed your application. You can follow the status of your application through your UAF account and check if your language test score report has arrived. 8. The admission results will be available on 30 April All applicants will be notified of the results of the selection via . Welcome packages will be sent to the admitted students.

11 University Admissions Finland University Admissions Finland (UAF) is a centralised service centre for Finnish universities that pre-processes applications. Pre-processing includes verifying the authenticity and accuracy of application documents. This includes e.g. contacting your previous educational institution and language test organiser. Any malpractice will be reported to universities and proper authorities. University Admissions Finland checks your eligibility for Master's-level studies but does not evaluate the academic content of your degree, as this is done by the university. UAF offers technical support and assistance on how to fill in the application via and telephone. The telephone service is available during the application period only, Monday to Friday from 12-4 p.m. (GMT +2) on the following telephone number In addition, they can also be reached through info(at)universityadmissions.fi. When contacting UAF, please mention your application form number, name, date of birth and what programme you are applying to. Required Enclosures A complete application consists of the filled out and signed application form and the following enclosures: 1. Officially certified copy of your bachelor's degree certificate/diploma. If the document is issued in a language other than English, Swedish or Finnish, you must also submit an authorized English translation of the degree certificate. Please note that you should not send your own original degree certificate since neither UAF nor Hanken will return any application documents. Please note the country-specific requirements (more info at regarding officially certified copies. Applicants who have not yet completed their degree can apply for admission without initially enclosing a degree certificate. Such applicants should send an officially attested copy of their degree certificate directly to Hanken as soon as they have received it, however no later than 31 July Official transcript of records. A transcript of records is an official document containing information on the courses taken and credits and grades received. An official transcript of records or an officially certified copy of the transcript of records must be attached to the application. The official transcript of records must include the following information:

12 - full titles of the units that the student has completed for the degree - completion times of study units (or at the very least the overall study time at the institution) - grades obtained - credits awarded - information on the grading scale used at the institution The transcript must cover the full length of studies. If the degree includes course units that the student has completed at another institution and the transferred credits are not indicated in detail on the transcript of records, a separate transcript of records regarding the transferred credits should be submitted. University Admissions Finland only accepts official transcripts of records. If the transcript is issued in a language other than English, Swedish or Finnish, you must also submit an authorised translation of the transcript. Please note the country-specific requirements (more info at regarding officially certified copies. 3. Diploma Supplement (if available). A Diploma Supplement is a document attached to a higher education diploma providing a standardised description of the nature, level, context, content and status of the studies that were pursued and successfully completed by the graduate. The Diploma Supplement is quite widely used within the European Union with the purpose of providing transparency and facilitating academic and professional recognition of qualifications. Please attach an officially certified copy of your diploma supplement if you received one when you graduated. 4. Official GMAT or GRE score report. The official GMAT or GRE score report must be sent directly to Hanken by the test organisation. The test must be taken no later than 13 February Since it can take over a month for test scores to arrive, it is very important to take the test as early as possible. We accept test scores continuously throughout the year. 5. Certificate of English language proficiency. An online language test score report sent directly from the testing organisation to UAF is required if you have taken the PTE Academic test. If you have taken the TOEFL test, the test score report must be sent directly by Educational Testing Services (ETS) to University Admissions Finland (UAF) or its electronic equivalent needs to be made available to University Admissions Finland. For the IELTS or CPE test, a plain photo copy of the score report included with the application is sufficient. Language test score reports must reach UAF by 13 February 2015 in order to be taken into account and it might take over a month for the results to arrive, so please make sure that you make testing arrangements in time. Applicants who

13 are not required to take a language test should include officially certified copies of documents that prove that you are exempt from the test requirement (see language requirements for details). Note that applicants to the Double Degree programme within the Master's degree programme Business and Management are always required to provide a language test score result. 6. Official transcript or records from Hanken. If you are, or have been at some point, a student at Hanken, you should submit a transcript of records of the courses completed at Hanken. 7. Photo copy of the applicant's passport. Only the page with identification information is required. Please do not include copies of your whole passport (visas, entry stamps etc). 8. CV (recommended attachment, not mandatory). Applicants are free to attach a CV in English to their application. The letter of motivation is part of the application form. There is no need to submit a separate motivation letter. Work experience and recommendation letters are not taken into account when selecting students for the Master's Degree Programmes. All documents which are not listed above will be removed from your application. Key Facts Regarding the Enclosures All educational documents (e.g. degree certificates, transcripts of records, diploma supplements etc.)must be officially certified by the issuing institution or a notary public. An officially certified copy is a copy that bears the stamp and signature of an authorised university official or a notary public. Regular photo copies of certified copies and copies certified by two private individuals are not accepted. Applicants, whose degrees have been awarded in certain countries, need to pay special attention to the documentation before submitting it. In addition to the standard document requirements, educational documents from certain countries must be submitted in a certain way. These country-specific requirements (more info at must always be followed first and foremost, before any regular requirements for attesting documents. Officially certified copies of the educational documents in the original language must always be enclosed. If the documents are issued in a language other than English, Swedish or Finnish, an

14 English translation must always be attached to the documents. The translations must be made by an authorised translator and must be submitted in original or as officially certified copies. Each page of an official translation must bear the translator's stamp and/or signature. Official translations must be exact translations of the original documents. Translations done by the applicant him- or herself are not accepted. The GMAT or GRE test result must be sent directly to Hanken by the test organisation (not to UAF!). Please note that neither UAF nor Hanken will return any application documents to applicants. The documents that you applied with during the previous application have been archived. Unfortunately we cannot return last year's documents and if you are applying again, you will need to submit new documents to UAF. Selection of Students The selection of students to the programmes is based on a system of numerus clausus (restricted entry). This means that admission is granted on a competitive basis and that applicants might not be admitted even if they are eligible for the programme in question. There will be no discrimination based on age, gender, ethnicity or other similar grounds. The selection of students is based on whether or not the applicant meets the general eligibility requirements for studies within a Master's Degree programme at Hanken, as well as on an evaluation made by the academic representatives of the programme based on the following criteria in the order listed below: 1. The scope and content of, as well as the applicant's success in, his or her previous studies in general, with the focus on the intended major and economic sciences 2. GMAT or GRE score 3. The applicant's motivation letter Admission results Hanken will notify the applicants of the admissions decision. The admission results will be ready by30 April A letter of acceptance will be sent to the admitted students. As soon as

15 the admission results are ready, the names of the admitted students will be published on Hanken's website. Please note that only the names of the admitted students who have marked on the application form that they permit us to publish their name on the Internet will appear on this list. An will also be sent to all applicants when the admission results are ready. If an applicant believes that there has been an error in the decision making process, he or she has the right to request rectification of the decision. Well-founded requests are to be made in writing to the Rector within 14 days of the announcement of the results of the selection, however no later than 19 May The request must have reached Hanken by this date at 15:00 (GMT +2). A request for rectification cannot be sent by . Please note that a request for rectification is not the same as a request for a reconsideration of your application. The admission decision is reached after a careful, objective evaluation of each application by both faculty and administrative staff, and is ultimately approved by the Rector of the university. The right that the applicant has to request rectification of the admission results is designed to protect applicants from being mistreated. This means that an applicant has the possibility to request rectification if there has been an error in the decision making process. It does not exist for the purpose of giving the applicant a second chance for admission.
