FAQ FAQ FA Hounours AQ FAQ FAQ International Business Innovation Studies FA Voltijd Amsterdam/Diemen AQ Can I study abroad? You will have the opportunity to go abroad as part of your studies throughout the programme; by going on short excursions and study trips abroad, by studying a full semester at one of our partner institutions or by doing your work placement or graduation project abroad. Can I do my internship/graduation abroad Q A You can do a work placement abroad and conduct your graduation project for a commissioning client abroad. As you will be required to participate in on-campus activities throughout your final year, going abroad for a full semester to work on your graduation project is not desirable (you can, however, go abroad for part of your final semester, for example to collect research data). What are the entry requirements? FA Students who meet the formal admission requirements, set by Dutch education law, will be admitted to the programme: vwo, havo, mbo4 or equivalent foreign diploma, propaedeutic certificate, associate degree certificate, bachelor degree, foreign degree or diploma that provides entry to higher education in country of origin, positive 21+ test scores; FA N&T N&G E&M C&M havo Econ or M&O Econ or M&O admissible Econ or M&O vwo Econ or M&O Econ or M&O admissible Econ or M&O English proficiency IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL ibt 80 / Cambridge Advanced A, B or C or comparable AQ (certificate not older than 2 years) for students with a foreign diploma from a country where English is not the native language; A passing grade for English on the final exam vwo, havo or the mbo4 intake test English for Dutch students. Each student that enrols in the International Business Innovation Studies programme partakes in an intake procedure. Prior to the start of the academic year, students are interviewed and tested during Q A recruitment sessions (on campus in Diemen for Dutch residents) or via Skype (for international students), to make sure they understand what the International Business Innovations Studies programme is about and expects from them in terms of attitude and commitment. It is very important that students are prepared for the rigorous nature of the programme and the international and multicultural community. They need to be committed to learning (at higher levels) and willing to be open to other cultures in order to be successful in the International Business Innovation Studies programme. They should also be willing and able to travel abroad as part of their studies. 1
Kijk voor meer informatie op What level of English is required or needed? You need to be proficient in English at a level comparable to IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL ibt 80 / Cambridge Advanced A, B or C. If you have studied in an English speaking country for the three most recent years of your education and have obtained an official diploma from your institution, you maybe exempt from the English proficiency certificate requirements. Inholland will need to check and validate your diploma and transcript before awarding you an exemption. The English language requirement will also not apply for students who have completed their prior education in the English language and who have attained the following, for example: the European Baccalaureate with English as the language of instruction and a minimum score of 6 for the English language; the International Baccalaureate with English as the language of instruction and a minimum score of 4 for the English language; a General Certificate of Education (GCE) or a General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) with an A, B of C for English, examined by British examining boards, such as Edexcel, Cambridge or OCR; a High School certificate obtained in the United States of America from a recognised high school, which certificate shows that the candidate received education at the high school in question for a minimum of three years; a havo, vwo or mbo 4 certificate (or equivalent certificate); diploma validation from Inholland University of Applied Sciences which states the prior education suffices regarding the English language. We recommend that Dutch students (havo, vwo, mbo4) make sure they pass their final English exams with a 7 or higher to ensure a smooth transition into IBIS. If i do not have an English certificate, can I do the 21+ test instead? If your previous education is not on the required minimum level and you are over 21, there is an option to do a 21+ exam. The test takes two and a half hours and includes the following: Reading Use of English (which includes grammar) Writing Competence in Economics and Math This 21+ exam will replace the required minimum educational level if passed. The 21+ exam does not replace the English proficiency requirements: all 21+ candidates are required to submit a TOEFL / IELTS / Cambridge certificate separately as part of the admissions procedure. Will there be international students in the programme? Yes, there will be a mix of students from the Netherlands and international students from all over the world. 2
Will it be possible to enrol in a related Master programme after graduation? As graduates are awarded a Bachelor of Business Administration degree upon successful completion of the IBIS programme, they are eligible to enrol in all (pre-)master s programmes requiring a BBA. IBIS is currently looking into Master s programmes (in NL and abroad) that specifically tie into the IBIS bachelor, and discussing collaboration agreements with universities offering these programmes. In addition, Inholland will develop its own professional Master in Business / Creative Innovation by 2017, in collaboration with the research group Creative Innovation. I didn t make the right study choice before, can I make sure that IBIS is the right study for me before registering? Yes, you can participate in the Study Check. The Study Check gives you a good impression of the programme. The Check makes clear what the programme demands of you and provides clarity about the occupation for which you will be educated. The Study Check is spread across two days. During these days, for instance, you will be offered a taster session and you will have discussions with students and lecturers. This makes it possible for you to experience what the programme of your choice entails and whether it is suited to you. It is an important aid in choosing your study. You will automatically receive an invitation for the Study Check after you register for the programme in Studielink. This is a new study, how can I be sure all is arranged? We cannot start a new programme without the approval of the Dutch Ministry of Education. To get this approval, the programme must be accredited by the NVAO (Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation). As part of the accreditation process, the NVAO does an in-depth study of the design and organization of the programme; making sure everything is in place to provide the students with a quality education and learning environment. IBIS has recently been accredited by the NVAO. How do I know that the quality of the programme is up to par? See answer to previous question. In addition: - The programme was designed and developed in close collaboration with experts from the professional field (potential future employers), making sure the programme focuses on the skills and knowledge needed in the real world, now and in the future; - We have set up an elaborate quality assurance system for IBIS to make sure the programme continues to offer the quality one can expect from a rigorous Hbo study programme. Periodical quality checks involve all the programme s direct stakeholders: professional field (future employers), students and staff; - Our teaching staff are all required to have extensive didactic training and professional experience (e.g. through periodic teacher internships in companies) 3
What s the average study load / number of contact hours in a week? Students are expected to put in approximately 40 (clock) hours of study a week. In the first year, 20 of those hours involve direct contact with teaching staff (either in groups or individually). In the second year, as well as the first semesters of year 3 and 4 students can count on 16 contact hours a week. During the second semester of year 3 students are on work placement and receive individual coaching (approx. 15 hours). During the second semester of year 4 we offer some 8 contact hours a week (on average) and students receive approximately 15 hours of individual coaching in their graduation project. Are the teachers international / native speakers? We have a diverse team of teachers, with different backgrounds (e.g. British, French, Spanish). Some are native speakers of English, all are proficient in English at the Cambridge PE level (highest level). International experience and English proficiency are job requirements for IBIS teachers. If it s a rigorous programme, how do you guarantee there won t be slackers among the students who just think it s cool to study in an international programme, but aren t willing to do the work? Each student that enrols in the International Business Innovation Studies programme partakes in an intake procedure. Prior to the start of the academic year, students are interviewed and tested during recruitment sessions (on campus in Diemen for Dutch residents) or via Skype (for international students), to make sure they understand what the International Business Innovations Studies programme is about and expects from them in terms of attitude and commitment. Students who are not (sufficiently) committed to learning (at higher levels) and willing to be open to other cultures, will be discouraged to enrol in the programme. The programme also starts off with a deep-dive assignment in the first week of the academic year, where the students commitment is immediately put to the test. In the unlikely event that slackers got through the intake procedure, they will get a tough confrontation during that week. How is the professional field involved in the programme The programme was designed and developed in close collaboration with the professional field (the IBIS Professional Advisory Board) and is discussed with the professional advisory board on a regular basis. The professional field is also involved throughout the programme through guest lecturers, real assignments and projects, work placements, graduation projects and coaching. Is there a job market for graduates of IBIS? Are companies eager to hire people with an IBIS profile? Graduates of the International Business Innovation Studies programme have job opportunities in any business they want. Every business needs strong innovative entrepreneurs and leaders, be it the service, entertainment, health, financial or technology industry. The International Business Innovation Studies graduate can opt for a general innovation leadership career or for a more specialised innovation officer function. The primary target employers for graduates of the International Business Innovation Studies programme comprise medium-sized and large international or multinational firms, 4
but there are ample opportunities for the graduates in smaller sized businesses as well. Or they can choose to become independent entrepreneurs and start their own business / agency. Where can graduates expect to be employed after graduation (which (types of) companies)? Every business needs strong innovative entrepreneurs and leaders, so IBIS graduates can pretty much work in any business they want. They can take jobs (see next question) in medium or larger sized companies in a variety of sectors / industries (consumer goods, food, healthcare, retail, banking, tourism, entertainment, marketing / advertising, manufacturing, IT, automotive, logistics, education, etc.) or they can apply to work at (innovation) consultancy and design firms like Frog, IDEO, Leap, The Bridge, etc. What jobs can we have after graduation? Concept Developer User Experience Professional / Designer Business Process (re)designer Business Model Officer Innovation Consultant / Officer Creative Facilitator Trendwatcher & Analyst Business Development Officer New Business Implementation Specialist Product Manager Research & Development Officer (Visual) Interaction Designer Strategy Consultant Business Creator Entrepreneur Creative Technologist Project / Program Manager Change Coordinator Why this programme? What does the graduate do (what is the graduate profile)? The (business) world is changing at a rapid pace. Methods and solutions that worked well in the past don t seem to work (as well) anymore. Businesses need to become more creative in their activities, in the way they operate and in how they solve issues in order to survive and thrive. They need to be agile at noticing and responding to key trends: they need to innovate constantly. The IBIS graduates are the people who will help businesses do just that: the IBIS graduate is the initiator, facilitator and leader of innovation and change within organisations. In creative, but also realistic ways, so that solutions and ideas are really implemented. The characteristic responsibilities and expertise of experienced IBIS graduates are: - Defining trends and developments, problems, issues, opportunities, necessary changes; - Designing value adding solutions that meet the end users needs (e.g. concepts, strategies, products, services, processes); - Executing / implementing business cases, plans, ideas, solutions and performing tasks and activities derived from the business case and plans (marketing, sales, HR, purchasing, finance, etc.); 5
- Evaluating, measuring and monitoring performance and execution; - Leading change / innovation. What s the difference / unique selling point of this programme compared to other business study programmes (like IBMS and Business Studies)? IBIS focuses on innovation and change, whereas IBMS and Business Studies focus on management of a (part) business. IBIS graduates have a profound knowledge of business fundamentals (e.g. marketing, HRM, finance, strategy, etc.) and operations in order to change the status quo in these and help the business innovate. IBMS en BS students have this profound knowledge in order run and manage the business and maintain the status quo as much as possible. As a result, creativity (creative thinking, design, conceptualization, visualization, etc.) is a major part of the IBIS programme, where it has no, or just a minor role in IBMS and BS. Of course, the Business Studies programme is a Dutch programme, whereas IBIS is an international and English programme. I wanted to do Leisure Management in English, but I heard that programme is being discontinued. Can I still do something in Leisure Management if I do IBIS? If the sector / industry of Leisure and Entertainment interests you, then you can of course choose to work as a director of innovation in that sector. The core curriculum of the IBIS programme does not focus specifically on Leisure or Entertainment Management (or any other sector / industry), but we do offer some industry specific electives (called negotiated learning units ) so that you can acquire industry relevant knowledge and skills during the programme. If your ambition is to organize Leisure and Entertainment events and experiences, (and not necessarily to be an innovator), and want to study in English, you might prefer the International Media and Entertainment Management programme Inholland offers in The Hague. You can also look into the Dutch Vrijetijdsmanagement and Media and Entertainment Management programmes. To what extent are we going to study innovation and design? Innovation and Design are crucial elements of the IBIS study programme. You will be introduced to these topics in the second term of year 1 and continue to study and learn about and apply them from then on. Regarding Design: you will learn how to make sketches and create prototypes so that you can lead teams of Designers in your future work. We are not trying to train you as a (industrial) designer. Will creative courses be offered? Yes. The IBIS programme includes topics and practice sessions in Design, Visualisation, Creative Thinking, Sketching, Prototyping, Brainstorming etcetera. To what extent will Culture and cultural anthropology be studied? IBIS is an international programme; the student population is international AND the content of the programme is international. This means we look at all the topics from different national and cultural perspectives and study different regions of the world. Culture (norms and values) is a very important aspect of innovation: the success of innovations often depends on culture, so cultural aspects are integrated in virtually every part of the programme. 6
The programme also includes training in cross-cultural skills, so that you ll be able to deal and successfully work with different cultures, during your studies and afterwards in your job. What diploma are we going to receive at the end? Upon successful completion of the IBIS programme your will receive a (internationally accepted) Bachelor of Business Administration degree stating you studied International Business Innovation Studies. Which opportunities do I have to customise the programme according to my own interests? At IBIS we believe that intrinsic motivation is key to successful learning. Intrinsic motivation involves what the individual wants / likes to do, what interests him or her. In order to stimulate intrinsic motivation, and hence learning, no less than 50% of the programme is based on the students own choices. In addition to participating in the core curriculum, students make their own choices for Negotiated Learning Units (i.e. electives) and graduation track based on their own personal developments plans and the own interests, curiosities and talents. Students are also given ample opportunity to include their own interests in the core curriculum, by letting them choose their own assignments and projects. And of course, the work placement is something the student chooses for him/herself. 7
