1. What is the BAYOU Summer Program? Fact Sheet The Beginning Agricultural Youth Opportunities Unlimited (BAYOU) Program provides an opportunity for high school students to gain first hand knowledge about career opportunities in Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences and related disciplines. 2. What is the purpose of the College of Agricultural Family and Consumer Sciences Program? The major purpose of this program is to stimulate interest in careers opportunities available in these fields of study among high school students. 3. Who is eligible to participate? Rising high school seniors (have completed 11 th grade) and graduating seniors (incoming freshman) 4. What are the academic requirements? Minimum GPA of 2.5 5. Is knowledge of agriculture or family and consumer sciences required? No. 6. Are there specific courses one should have taken? Yes. Applicant should have completed or are working on a college preparatory curriculum. 7. Where will I live? All students will live in dormitories on the campus of Southern University and A&M College. Students will have an opportunity to go home on weekends at their own expense when no other activities are scheduled. 1

8. Is there a cost to participate in the program? No. The program pays all expenses. 9. Can I attend freshman orientation during the program? Yes, if selected, the program will aid you in coordinating an orientation date during the program. 10. How many students will be selected? A maximum of 30 students may be selected to participate in this year s program. The exact number will depend on availability of funds and the number of qualified applicants. 11. How do I get into the program? Program Name: Engineering Summer Institute (ESI) Duration: 4 weeks: June 13- July 7, 2016 Description: The Engineering Summer Institute (ESI) seeks to expose students to career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The goal of ESI is to broaden the access of students to these careers by exposing them to available options in an environment that facilitates intellectual exchange, academic enrichment, and fosters the learning, sharing, and growing processes. ESI offers the program for high school students. Criteria: Cost: Students promoted to grades 9 through 12 with a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale are eligible. JMTLI trained teachers are well prepared to offer students stimulating activities that will enhance their interest in pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields as potential career paths. Program Name: Southern University Summer Transportation and Energy Institute (STEI) Duration: June 6, 2016 through July 1, 2016 Website: www.steisubr.wix.com/steisubr Description: The Summer Transportation and Energy Institute is a unique concept that is designed to create an awareness of opportunities which exist in the transportation and energy industry and to stimulate an interest in secondary elementary school students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The institute consists of two programs: academic and enhancement. The academic program introduces participants to science issues, global conservation and land, air and water transportation. The curriculum includes problem-based learning projects, use of critical thinking skills, and hands-on projects. The enhancement program covers time management, study habits, test-taking skills, oral and written communication skills, and computer skills. Weekly fieldtrips are taken to enforce what is learned in the classroom. The participants will be engaged in a four-week intensive math, science, technical writing, and transportation and robotics program. Criteria: 1. Interest in STEM 2.
