ESCMID-SHEA Training Course in Hospital Epidemiology Brunnen / Switzerland 3-6 September 2011

Preface Dear colleagues, we would like to invite you to join us at the 13th ESCMID/SHEA Training Course in Hospital Epidemiology in Switzerland. The course is acknowledged by two prestigious international societies in the field of infectious diseases, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA). After a year outside of Europe (the 12th course was in cooperation with the Australian Society of Infectious Diseases) we believe that the latest changes to the course further improved what over the years evolved into the leading European course in its field. Once again the course faculty remained the same stable group of colleagues and friends all of them renowned experts dedicated to continuous quality improvement in infection control and the application of epidemiology within the healthcare setting. This intensive training course aims at those working in infection control and hospital epidemiology. As previously, three modules will be run in parallel, but to better reflect the course content the modules were renamed: The Healthcareassociated Infection Prevention and Management Core Module, the Applied Infection Control Module, and the Healthcare-associated Infection Advanced Epidemiology Module. 2

Next to exchange of science and practice one important aim of the course is to create a platform for international exchange and a possibility for exchange between students and faculty. We believe that the location in Brunnen will be ideal for that purpose and look forward to meeting you. Prof. A. Widmer Local organizer Prof. A. Voss Course coordinator 3

Healthcare-associated Infection Prevention and Management Core Module This module represents the core of the course that teaches the epidemiology and prevention of healthcare associated infections in hospitals, day-clinics/out-patient departments and nursing homes. It provides solid state-of-the-art lectures, hands-on exercises, case-oriented classes, self training and interactive problem sessions. Objectives: Describe the background and challenges of healthcareassociated infections and define precise objectives for healthcare-associated infection control Teach the major methodological and statistical techniques for infection control epidemiology Provide the infection control team with strategies in order to optimize resources and focus on improvement of quality and patient outcome Teach the participants about the structure and organization models of infection control on the institutional, regional, national and international level Review and evaluate methods for the management and control of healthcare-related pathogens Teach at state-of-the-art level the predominating types of healthcare-associated infections and specific strategies to contain them 6

You should attend if you are: a physician / nurse / technician, with future or actual responsibility in control programmes of healthcare-related infections; seeking a theoretical and practical training in order to prepare for the job; an experienced infection control practitioner seeking to evaluate your professional priorities and those of your team. The focus will be on the application of the theoretical background in clinical practice. At the end of the training, participants will be able to deal with infection control issues questions in their own institutes. This year s topics: Control of MRSA and VRE The use of bundles in infection control Control of infections in the ICU Endoscopes and disinfection Control of Legionella Control of antimicrobial use You should attend if you are: a physician working in the field of clinical microbiology, infectious diseases or a related medical specialty or an infection control practitioner and if you have several years of experience in the field of healthcare-related infection control and preferably you have attended the basic infection control course before. 8

The focus will be on advanced epidemiological methods and their application in the field of nosocomial infections and infection control. At the end of the training, participants will be able to interpret these methods for clinical practice and research. This year s topics: Principles of study design and analysis in epidemiology Meta-analysis Interactive sessions on problem solving in hospital infection epidemiology Introduction in mathematical modelling (with special emphasis on MRSA, search & destroy, and rapid diagnostic testing) Introduction to bacterial population biology (in relation to hospital epidemiology) You should attend if you are: a physician or otherwise experienced professional in the field of clinical microbiology, infectious diseases or a related medical specialty, and if you have several years of experience in the field of healthcare-related infection control, and preferably you have attended the basic infection control course before.
