1 INDIAN COUNCIL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH BASIC COURSE IN STATISTICS FOR MEDICAL DOCTORS, SCIENTISTS & OTHER RESEARCH INVESTIGATORS October 13 th 17 th 2014 INFORMATION BROCHURE COURSE OFFERED BY Division of Bio- statistics NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF EPIDEMIOLOGY R-127, Second Main Road Tamil Nadu Housing Board Ayapakkam, Chennai [email protected] Web :
2 Introduction The National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) located at Ayapakkam, Ambattur, Chennai is one of the permanent institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The Institute has vast experience in teaching basic statistics for doctors, conducting randomized controlled clinical trials, field prophylactic studies, evaluation of disease control programmes, immunization coverage surveys etc. The Institute has also been organizing various short duration training programmes for medical research workers. There is a need to train medical doctors, scientists and research investigators in proper appreciation and application of statistical methods to improve the quality of medical research and to have meaningful collaboration between them and statisticians. In this context, the Basic Course in Statistics is being conducted half yearly and also on felt- need basis. This course provides a broad overview of biostatistical methods and concepts used in the public health sciences, emphasizing interpretation and concepts rather than calculations or mathematical details. It develops ability to read the scientific literature to critically evaluate study methods of data analysis, and it introduces basic concepts of statistical inference, including hypothesis testing, P- values, and confidence intervals. Topics include Types of data; Tabulation and Diagrammatic representation; Measures of Central tendency & Dispersion; Normal and Sampling distributions; comparisons of means and proportions; Correlation and Linear Regression, Sampling techniques; Sample size, and Power considerations; Non-parametric tests; various methods of Randomization; Introduction to Statistical packages; Group work and presentations. The course draws examples of the use and abuse of statistical methods from the current biomedical literature. Programme It is proposed to conduct the next 5-day basic course in statistics for this year from 13 th October to 17 th October 2014 at NIE, Chennai. The Course is primarily designed for physicians engaged in medical research. Objectives Upon completion of this course, every participant will be able to do the following: Understand and give examples of different types of data arising in public health and medical research studies. Interpret differences in data distributions via visual displays. Describe data by
3 computing Measures of Central tendency & Dispersion; Calculate standard normal scores and resulting probabilities. Calculate and interpret confidence intervals for population means and proportions. Interpret and explain a P-value. Perform a two-sample t-test and interpret the results; calculate a 95% confidence interval for the difference in population means. Use Epi-Info to perform two sample comparisons of means and create confidence intervals for the population mean differences. Select an appropriate test for comparing two populations on a continuous measure, when the two sample t-test is not appropriate. Choose an appropriate method for comparing proportions between two groups; construct a 95% confidence interval for the difference in population proportions. Use Epi-Info to compare proportions amongst two independent populations. Understand and interpret relative risks and odds ratios when comparing two populations. Understand the rationale and the adequacy of Sample size, and Power considerations; When, how to use and interpret Non-parametric tests. Interpret output from the statistical software package. Above all, to demystify the art and science of statistics and to promote better understanding of the logic of various statistical methods, the underlying concepts and theory; and to promote better understanding of basic statistics and its application in medical research among the participants. Applicants Medical Doctors, Scientists, Researchers and/or Investigators of research projects, M.Phil/PhD program or a researcher from the field of Social Science / Management / Medicine, Project member of an NGO, Public health official, and Employees from industries who need to conduct quantitative data analysis as part of their work are eligible to apply. Conduct The content of this course in the workshop is divided into ten separate modules. Each of these modules combines audio presentation and slides - just like attending lectures in class. The Programme will consist of class- room lectures, Practice Problems and group participatory activities including Homework assignments. It also includes Course Evaluation. Faculty Faculty will consist of experienced staff members of the Institute
