HELSINGIN ENERGIA S DECENTRALIZED DISTRICT HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM THE MOST ENERGY EFFCIENT SOLUTION FOR PROVIDING ENERGY FOR THE SMART CITY OF HELSINKI 20th Annual DH Congress 14.-15.11.2013 Thermal Hotel Visegrád VEIKKO HOKKANEN

CITY OF HELSINKI Population 600 000 people Heat market ca. 8 000 GWh Growing cooling demand despite of relatively cold climate Thermal energy demand greater than electricity demand 2

HELSINKI ENERGY S SMART CHP/DHC SYSTEM Helsinki Energy s district heating system covers more than 90% of the heating need of the buildings in Helsinki. The connection capacity of the network is 3 300 MW and there are 14 600 customer connections. The operations have been improved in terms of their climate impact and efficiency throughout the years. 3

HELSINKI ENERGY NET TURNOVER AND OPERATING PROFIT 2012 4

CHP AND DHC IN HELSINKI The decisions of CHP and DH were made in 1953 by City Council Helsinki Energy has extensively operated its energy-efficient smart CHP/ hot water based DH system in Helsinki since 1957 Basic reasons for the DH were; Economical Ecological Supply reliability Energy political From the very beginning DHC have been economically success District Cooling supply started in 1998 5

CREATING REAL ESTATE VALUE WITH DH 1. Supply reliability 2. Environmental friendliness 3. Energy company is reliable partner 4. Prices are stable 5. Energy company is technical expert 6. Continuous development of DHC systems 7. DHC have a good reputation 8. Cooperation with the customers 9. Energy company is customer orientated 10. Active communication with the customers 11. Rapid response to the customers needs 12. Low price level 6

OUTSOURCED ENERGY SOLUTIONS Customers are willing to outsource heating and cooling production to energy company (compare to electricity or any other activity) Harms and risks of own production are avoided DHC are reliable and cost efficient solutions for whole life-cycle DHC customers can concentrate on their key businesses 7

1950 Outside temperature - 5 C Outside temperature - 25 C After the District Heating and the CHP 8

90 / 90 / 90 PHILOSOPHY IN DISTRICT HEATING 1) Market share is more than 90 % 2) Share of CHP more than 90 % 3) Overall efficiency is more than 90 % 9
