12 Smart District Heating Networks Research project within the Smart Grids Modellregion Salzburg National funding, consortium: AIT, Salzburg AG, (municipal DH supplier) Aim: analysing and evaluating the potential of Smart Grid concepts for district heating systems in the model region of Salzburg Method: Dynamic network simulation and model calculations are applied to investigate intelligent operation strategies and control mechanisms for the reduction of peak loads. 1. 14 Possible smart grid measures in thermal networks II Operational parameters and network controlling Utilising heat pumps for temperature lifting / production of cold joined control of decentralized producers (virtual heating plant) Modification of the pressure- and temperature level (low temperature networks), integration of passive buildings in the return line 80 C e.g. biomass CHP, industrial waste heat 25 C 50 C passive building solar thermal energy e.g. building stoke, warm water preparation Advantages of low temperature DH networks: lowering invest- and operational costs Potential to exploit renewable resources like low temperature waste heat But: warm water preparation difficult! (temp. above 65 C necessary for warm water storage), solutions: additional heating or direct heating w/o storage
