JOB DESCRIPTION AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL INTERNATIONAL SECRETARIAT JOB TITLE: Multichannel Designer TEAM: Design Studio PROGRAMME: Global Content DIRECTORATE: Campaign and Communications JOB PURPOSE: Deliver high-quality design to achieve visual impact for human rights concerns. Respond accordingly to briefs from the Creative Lab, promote Amnesty s Global Identity across all communication outputs, liaise with technical developers to ensure design quality is maintained throughout. TEAM PURPOSE: The Design Studio is managed by the Head of Design and is home to three other posts: the Interaction Designer and two Multichannel Designers. The team s main purpose is to lead all visual design, narrative and interpretation for the IS. It unites the work of AV and Editorial through design, leads on visual guidelines and developing brand, and guides the look and feel of all communication solutions. Added to this, it will have the remit to: Help teams identify and implement creative solutions to their objectives through the Creative Lab. Part of achieving this will be to be in constant conversation with developers and user experience colleagues in DCP, and marketing and brand colleagues, to clarify what is appropriate, and what is possible Ensure the organization s visual communications and campaigns output is contemporary in operation, original, and appropriate to Amnesty values Working mainly to Story Boards and creative concepts generated in the Creative Lab, the Design Studio will take on this work further, deliver visual outputs, ensuring that Amnesty has recognizable and compatible user experience across all communications vehicles, and embodies One Amnesty in all we do PROGRAMME PURPOSE: The Programme is the home of the International Secretariat s Design Studio, Editorial Studio and Audio Visual production and resources (the exact make-up of which is under review). Its primary purpose is to be a global resource for the movement, providing and promoting engaging human rights content across all media and all platforms. It will bring three specific areas of communications expertise together to: Bring about human rights change by creating cross-platform, nimble, communication solutions for the organization s strategic campaign, communication and business goals Support the Movement s growth and impact by spear-heading a user-centred approach to content generation in the IS, as opposed to output-centred. This
means integrating all content types - stills, audio, video, text into one programme and ensure the intended audience is constantly positioned as the focal point of the Programme s output Lead all communication strategies and multimedia content developed through the Creative Lab Work collaboratively with colleagues in Regional Hubs, Sections, Research, Campaigns, Law and Policy, Fundraising, Language Resources, Global Production Services and the Brand Unit, to build and maintain a truly global, multimedia, Story Server for the organization Develop and lead effective Content and Editorial strategies for Amnesty International, that embed Global Identity and Tone of Voice in all we produce Develop user personae and supporter journeys for fundraising, activism, and all forms of audience engagement DIRECTORATE PURPOSE: Lead on global and regional campaigns Deliver integrated and effective campaign and communications strategies and services to the Amnesty movement Communicate effectively to external audiences Have top level professional expertise across all communications channels Help to grow the Amnesty movement Contribute directly to the improvement of human rights around the world AIIS PURPOSE: The International Secretariat, which operates from a number of sites around the world, gathers and communicates accurate and action-oriented human rights information globally. We campaign for meaningful human rights change; enable effective human rights activism and work to persuade governments and other actors to uphold universal human rights standards. We provide strategic leadership, support and advice to the Amnesty International movement globally, fostering Amnesty International s contribution, presence and public accountability throughout the world. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES: Create designs for digital and print products to effectively convey issues and messages through Amnesty International s websites, social media channels, email, quarterly action-zone WIRE & Livewire, campaigning and fundraising materials, reports, books, the Amnesty International Report, press kit and other toolkit templates Bring design expertise to the organization s Creative Lab and innovation fora Develop ideas and creative content to brief, from the Creative Lab, ensuring outputs follow Amnesty International s Global brand and visual identity, and have target audiences in mind Create new concepts, mockups, wireframes and visual and interactive designs based on these briefs and other internal requirements, present them to colleagues Support capacity building in the movement by developing appropriate design solutions in accessible templates for regional use and localization Design elements and graphics for the movement s use, ensuring they can be made locally appropriate, and are available through the global Story Server Collaborate with DCP, Media Programme and Editorial Studio to produce incidental website graphics such as infographics and interactives Work closely with other team members including IA/UX, Developers and other Designers to optimize channel use and ensure audience is at the heart of all design Work with a wide range of media, including photography and computer-aided design (CAD) Demonstrate illustrative concepts with rough sketches Keep abreast of emerging technologies in new media and the design industry Liaise with developers, typesetters and printers (external and internal) when necessary to ensure quality of finished product Input and accommodate revisions throughout editing and shaping process of designed outputs WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE IN THIS JOB? Designer will be engaged in the innovative space and function of the Creative Lab and set their workplans from this forum All design will be guided by work on user experience and the suite of User Personas and potential user journeys User and supporter journeys will be compatible across all media User-centred experience will underpin all such design Designers will have close working relationships with Regional Digital Managers
and Regional Content Managers in hubs, including ascertaining and helping fulfil training needs Visual brand guidelines, toolkits and templates will have been created and made available to the Movement Design solutions will be integrated and holistic across different platforms The quality of design work from the IS will be Movement-leading SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Expert knowledge of current graphic design practices and software such as Quark or Indesign, and most elements of Creative Suite, such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Flash, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Fireworks Overall six years experience on brand identity, printed literature and campaigns across traditional and digital platforms, or a relevant qualification and three years experience Proven experience of developing and delivering on design briefs through collaborative working Experience in Brand communication and developing brand guidelines Basic HTML5 and CSS capability with experience working with CMS systems Technical knowledge of how web-based technologies apply to web design such as HTML, FLASH, CSS and Ajax Expert knowledge of typography and layout and the fundamentals of design Understanding UX and ability to work with wireframes Experience working on digital and banner ads Comfortable presenting work internally and externally Campaign experience would be desirable Experience of working in a multilingual environment would be desirable HOW YOU WORK - COMPETENCIES: Competency: Level: (A, B or C) Delivering Results: A Working with others: B Developing oneself and others: B Contributing to a Dynamic and Effective International Secretariat: B Making decisions: A Taking the initiative: B Communicating and influencing: B
