HEALTH DEGREES AT RCC ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE (AS) Human Performance Studies Nursing ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED SCIENCE (AAS) Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Occupational Therapy Assistant CERTIFICATE Fitness Specialist Why Should I Study Health? An increase in demand for health care professionals is expected due to technological advancements and the aging baby-boomer population. An associate s degree in a health field provides a solid foundation for many fouryear college majors and a wide choice of careers. Those earning an associate s degree in Nursing, EMS or Occupational Therapy Assistant or a Fitness Specialist certificate may enter the workforce right away. The Nursing degree prepares students for a career as a Registered Nurse (RN). RNs provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about health conditions, and provide advice and support to patients and their families. RCC s pass rate on the NCLEX licensing exam for the RN credential is significantly higher than the New York State average. The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) degree prepares students to treat out-of-hospital patients with life-threatening illness or injuries. Successful completion prepares students to take the practical and written certification examinations of the NYS Department of Health EMS Bureau and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic. Knowledge and training in physical fitness and wellness prepares you to play an important role in resolving health challenges facing our nation such as diabetes and heart disease. The AS in Human Performance Studies prepares you for transfer to a bachelor s degree program in Physical Education, Exercise Science or other fitness/wellness related fields. Injuries, developmental or emotional problems or diseases disrupt people s lives and can create difficulties in doing everyday tasks. Occupational therapy is a health and rehabilitation profession that helps people regain or attain more productive, satisfying or independent lives. Graduates can become a New York State Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA).
