3 program facts Facts about Protective Services Programs The Protective Services programs at Madison Area Technical College provide students with hands-on experience and professional training as well as a solid grounding in human relations and communications vital to these highly public careers. Thanks to practical skills training and experience, graduates are prepared to handle a variety of situations and circumstances. Our two-year associate degrees prepare students for entry-level positions and meet state certification requirements or offer advanced standing on state certification. Students also are prepared to complete additional training either on the job, at MATC or at a four-year college. Our academies and shorter-term training build on students previous academic and professional training and prepares them to take certification exams. As a student at MATC you can take advantage of a wide variety of support services including tutoring, academic advising, counseling and job placement services. We offer day care services for students who are parents, access to a well-equipped fitness center and a wide variety of athletics, student organizations and community events.

5 law enforcement Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Two-year associate degree 68 credits Law enforcement officer efficiency and effectiveness increases with a better understanding of the daily problems of society and knowledge of law enforcement techniques. Acquire the academic and professional training necessary to become a law enforcement officer including hands-on law enforcement training and the necessary skills in behavioral sciences and communication. Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Academy Less-than-one-year diploma 16 credits The Law Enforcement Academy prepares candidates for entry-level positions as law enforcement officers at the municipal, county and state level. The program is limited to sworn law enforcement officers assigned by their department with the approval of the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Law Enforcement Recruit Certification Students graduating with an associate degree in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement can receive advanced standing towards certification as a Wisconsin law enforcement officer. Students completing the first two semesters of the program may apply for the skills certification courses required to complete their training, making them eligible for certification. Students must complete all criminal justice core courses within three years to be eligible to apply for the skills certification. Law enforcement recruit training is authorized and approved by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board. Exceptions to this are granted on a space available basis to candidates who meet these admission requirements: 1) possession of a two-year associate degree from a Wisconsin technical college or its accredited equivalent from another state or 2) a minimum of 60 fully accredited college-level credits, and meeting the requirements below. Both programs require that graduates seeking employment also must: pass a physical exam and meet physical fitness standards have possession of a valid driver s license and a good driving record have no conviction for a felony offense pass a background investigation, psychological testing and mandatory drug testing For more information, call 608/
6 firefighting Fire Protection Technician Two-year associate degree 65 credits Fire Service Education Center/Madison Campus Start August The constant changes and growing complexities of modern living and the environment are creating a demand for college-trained people in the fire service field. Opportunities for graduates exist in municipal fire departments, insurance companies and government agencies, and in the field of industrial safety. This program is designed to meet the needs of personnel currently employed in fire service positions and those interested in preparing for a career in fire service. Fire Certification Academy Less-than-one-year diploma 9 credits Fire Service Education Center/Madison Campus Start August, January and June The Fire Certification Academy includes two courses the Fire Service Academy and the EMT Basic course. The Fire Service Academy includes 200 hours of fire fighting training and prepares students for the State of Wisconsin Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification exams. The EMT Basic course follows the U. S. Department of Transportation EMT Basic course curriculum. Hospital emergency room experience is required and the Wisconsin Ambulance Attendant Licensure Exam is given. For more information, call 608/

Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic Less-than-one-year diploma 25 credits Paramedic Technician Two-year associate degree 69 credits Start August These programs stress the integration of knowledge and skills required to competently perform pre-hospital advanced life support. Graduates are eligible for national certification and Wisconsin licensure as an EMT- Paramedic. Admission requirements include current Wisconsin EMT licensure or eligibility for Wisconsin licensure and documentation of at least one year of active EMT experience or summary of 50 ambulance transports.
