1 Volume 16, Issue 2 November 2015 S U N Y A d i r o n d a c k Upward Bound UB Families, I am very excited to share with you that I have been appointed the next Project Director of the SUNY Adirondack Upward Bound program. I started my work with Upward Bound as a summer program assistant in 2011 and have held almost every staff position since! I am so happy to have the opportunity to continue to work with Upward Bound and take on even more responsibility. The program will continue to provide the same great services as we always have, but I will work on making them better and adding even more! In order to do that, the next step will be to conduct a search for an Assistant Project Director. If everything works out, the hope is to have someone in place by the beginning of December. I know there has been a lot of transition in the UB office, and will continue to be as Molly goes on maternity leave and Chelsea fills Molly s role for eight weeks while she is away, but we are committed to you. The staff may be changing, but the level of service, support, and resources is not. Sophomore Summit at UVM On October 27th, seven sophomores attended the Upward Bound Sophomore Summit at the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT. These students had the opportunity to tour the college campus, experience a lecture from a college professor and have a special session with an admissions counselor. The most important take away of the day was that taking challenging courses each year is more important than having a great GPA in easy courses. Thank you Matt, Courtney, Miranda, Emily, Megan, Lindsay and Tessa for making it a great day! 4 College of the Month SUNY New Paltz Distance from Queensbury: 2 hours and 1 minute Cost of Attendance: $19,240 SUNY New Paltz is located in the Hudson Valley region, between Albany and New York City. It is a medium-sized institution in a suburban area, with approximately 6,500 undergraduates in attendance. New Paltz s most popular majors include Business/ Marketing, Education, Social Sciences, Visual and Performing Arts and Communications/Journalism. The Hawks offer 6 Men s athletic teams and 9 Women s teams at the NCAA Division III level. Student life offers many unique opportunities including regular stargazing nights in their own planetarium and a strong student blog, called NP Bloggers. New Paltz also offers a wide variety of study abroad programs for students, spanning 6 of the 7 continents. Career of the Month 2012 Median Salary: $42,690 Degree: Bachelor s Job Outlook: 19% (Faster than average) Athletic Trainer Athletic trainers specialize in preventing, diagnosing and treating sport injuries through therapeutic exercises and nutrition. Academic programs for athletic training include a lot of science courses as well as clinical experience. Athletic trainers can work in educational settings, doctor s offices or for sports teams. In most states, athletic trainers need a license/certification, yet it varies state to state. In order to become an athletic trainer, one must also pass the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (BOC) exam. It is strongly encouraged for students who do not have a overall 80% average! Reminder: Bus tokens are available for students.
