2 EKG Technician (Certificate Program) The EKG Technician program is a 465 clock hour program which provides an introduction to the health care industry specific to duties and responsibilities of an EKG Technician, also known as an EKG Tech. This curriculum presents the foundational theory and skills necessary to gain entry-level employment as an EKG Technician. Knowledge includes a solid understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology; skills include performing an EKG, and recognizing a cardiac emergency. Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will be able to: Educational outcomes are the terminal competencies expected of the program graduates. At the end of the EKG Technology Program at Pensacola State College, the graduate will be able to: 1. Perform an EKG 2. Recognize and report a cardiac emergency 3. Assist in patient preparation for Holter & Telemetry monitoring 4. Assist with stress testing 5. Monitor Telemetry units Graduates of the program are eligible to take an examination to qualify as a Certified EKG Technician through the National Healthcareer Association. Role of the EKG Technician An EKG technician is a medical professional who administers tests to record and analyze electrical impulses transmitted by the heart and often runs the tests as a regular part of pre-surgery screening. Tests are also commonly performed by the technician as part of a general physical examination of a middle-aged person or one who has experienced past cardiovascular problems. Routine tasks include: Preparing patient for EKG, Holter and telemetry monitoring and stress testing Identifying the right patient to receive an EKG Attaching EKG leads to patient Entering patient data on the EKG machine Obtaining information from patients Conducting an EKG Assisting with performing stress testing Monitoring patients on telemetry (in hospital) Reporting results as needed Place of Employment An EKG Tech typically works in a doctor s office, clinic, or hospital and spends much of their shift on their feet. They can also be employed at cardiac centers, cardiac rehabilitation centers. 2
3 State and National Earnings As entry level EKG technicians have limited experience, which has a large effect on the salary paid, they can expect to receive less than the average high salary of $74,076. The average low salary for an EKG technician with limited experience is $32,800. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports the average salary paid to EKG Technicians in the U.S. in May 2008 was $47,010. The majority of EKG technicians, some 50 percent, earn between $32, 800 and $61,580 annually.(source: Although a license is not required for employment as an EKG Technician, a national credentialing exam is available and is highly recommended for employment. Training Pathway The EKG Technician Program is a 465-clock hour program divided into classroom, lab, and clinical settings. OCP courses A and B may be taken in sequence or concurrently. Upon satisfactory completion of this course, the student will receive three Occupational Completion Point certificates, Basic Healthcare Worker (90 hours), EKG Aide (75 hours), and EKG Technician (300 hours) as per the Florida Department of Education. Program policy requires that all required courses be completed with a grade of C or better. Beyond Graduation Graduates of Pensacola State College s EKG Technician program may advance in their field by continuing their education in other health related areas such as Patient Care Tech, ER Tech, Stress Test Assistant, EKG Monitor Tech, nursing, or other direct and indirect patient care degree programs at Pensacola State College. Career Outlook EKG technicians have a bright outlook for job availability within a hospital setting, although trainees should learn many different procedures to secure their future as the field becomes more competitive, reports the U.S. Department of Labor. 4 Negative urine drug screen and criminal background check Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) score on file (unless exempt) Testing Requirements Unless exempt (see below for exemption requirements) TABE scores of 9 or higher in Reading, Mathematics, and Language are required for successful completion of the program. If a student scores less than the minimum required score, the student will be advised for self-remediation or tutoring services. The TABE is required for entry into a program; however, the test is an exit requirement. This means that a student who does not achieve the minimum required score will not receive credit for the OCP or the certificate, until the TABE score is met. Exemption for the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) in any clock hour program: Students who possess a college degree at the associate of applied science level or higher Any student who entered 9th grade in a Florida public school in the school year, or any year thereafter, and earned a Florida standard high school diploma or a student serving as an active duty member of any branch of the of the United States Armed Services Estimated Cost of the Program The EKG Technician program consists of 15.5 $ fees = Total $1, in-state. Tuition Florida residents $85.80/credit hour x 15.5 hours $ 1, Alabama residents $86.80/credit hour x 15.5hours $ 1, Non-Florida residents $343.20/credit hour x 15.5 hours $ 5, Additional Expenses (approximate): Lab Fees (including drug screen and background screen) $ Books $ Uniforms and Related items $ Tuition rates are subject to change. 5 The Pensacola State College EKG Technology Program is a sixteen (15.5) vocational credit certificate program (465 clock-hours). Classes are held during the day during the first semester and in the evenings during the second semester. The second term (spring) will include clinical hours at hospitals and medical facilities. Clinical hours are daytime only (7:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m.). The program begins each fall semester (D session in October) and concludes at the end of the spring semester (May). The program consists of classroom and simulated laboratory experiences during the fall semester and a clinical rotation in hospital and medical facilities during the spring semester. Selection Process Student enrollment in the program is limited to 25 new candidates per year. The number of students in each class is determined by the availability of space, equipment, qualified faculty and hospital and clinical facilities necessary for a meaningful education. Program acceptance is based on selection from all qualified candidates meeting the minimum criteria on a firstcompleted/first-seated basis. Contact the Admissions Office for details at (850) Orientation is usually held a few months before classes start and is mandatory. Upon official acceptance to the EKG Technology Program you will be required to attend the program orientation. Background check, drug screen, and a health form with appropriate immunizations are required. Please note: if you were convicted of, or pled Nolo Contendere to a felony, you may not be eligible to complete the program and be employed in health care. Financial Aid Students requiring financial assistance are directed to the Office of Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs (OFA & VA) (850) for information on numerous grants, and scholarships available. Short-term loans are available at registration. Inquiries should be directed to the Student Affairs Office on the Warrington Campus. Students needing assistance for an education are encouraged to seek every avenue of financial aid available for that purpose. Financial counseling, as well as help with the application process, is available. Students needing financial assistance must contact the Financial Aid office as soon as the need is determined. Vocational or Needs-Based Grants may be available through Financial Aid on the Warrington Campus. Other financial aid, such as the Health Program Opportunity Grant, may be available to certain candidates. Eligibility requirements for such grants require that students submit the FAFSA application and be considered eligible based upon need.
