Most health career programs are two years in length and lead to an Associate of Applied Science degree. Tri-C also offers certificates in many health career programs. In addition to starting a career, many students choose to transfer credits to fouryear colleges and universities to pursue advanced degrees. As a leader in health care education, Tri-C provides students with hands-on learning in on-campus, state-of-the-art laboratories and clinical experiences in area medical facilities and internationallyrecognized health care centers. The College has more than 400 clinical-affiliation agreements. With more than 30 professionally accredited health career fields of study at Tri-C, you can find a program that matches your strengths and interests. 1
3 Programs and Services DEGREE AND PROGRAMS Tri-C offers the following degree and certificate options: Associate of Applied Science Degree Short-Term Certificate (one year or less) One-Year Certificate of Proficiency Post-Degree Professional Certificate Complete a program and begin your career in health care. Professionals in the field can advance their careers by updating skills, expanding competencies/proficiencies and preparing for licensure or certification renewal. High school students who want to enter a health career program should consult with their high school academic advisor, maintain a high grade point average and volunteer in a health care environment to experience the field before graduating from high school. Four years of math, science and English are essential for high school students to complete before graduating and entering a health career program at the college level. SUPPORT SERVICES AND STUDENT LIFE Students have access to academic, career and personal counselors. Academic counseling is one of the most important services you will receive in college. You and the counselor will work together to achieve your educational goals as they relate to career and transfer opportunities. Career counselors will help with job research, assessment, educational planning and referral. Counselors are also available to explore solutions to personal concerns that impact your educational experience and development. Tri-C s Career Center offers job-search assistance and help in determining your career path. Schedule one-on-one coaching sessions, use online career exploration tools or attend job-readiness workshops. A full-service Student Financial Aid and Scholarships Office is located on each campus to help students navigate financial aid options, including grants, scholarships and student loans. Tri-C offers the lowest tuition in Northeast Ohio. The College provides programs and activities that promote learning and development outside of the classroom. Students have access to leadership training, activities, athletics, special events, campus student government and more than 30 clubs to join. 2
4 The Right Health Care Career for You Understand Which Health Care Environment is Right for You Health care is a rapidly changing, technology-driven, fast paced environment. It can be fascinating, rewarding and stressful. Health care professionals must be willing to work hard and be lifelong learners. Volunteering in a health care setting is an excellent way to find out if health care is a field of study that is right for you. Shadowing professionals in the careers that interest you is also an excellent way to find out more about health careers. Know What Health Care Careers Exist There are dozens of health care professions, all of which provide critical services to patients and/or health care organizations. Comprehensive descriptions of health care careers can be found at Explore the Difference Between Direct Patient Care and Non-Patient Care Careers Health care professions in nursing, respiratory care, occupational therapy, physical therapy and other areas are direct patient care professions. Careers in medical laboratory technology and health information management do not require the same level of direct patient care. If direct patient care does not interest you, there still are health careers that could be a good fit. Commit to Necessary Educational Requirements Training for a career in health care can take from a few months to eight or more years, depending on the profession. It is important to research a number of health careers and consider your circumstances carefully before making a decision to commit to completing a program on time. 3
5 Benefits of a Career in Health Care Do Work That Interests You A career in health care can lead in many directions. You can treat patients in an office or study cells under a microscope. You can work in a small doctor s office or help run a hospital. You can examine eyes, mend bones, clean teeth or assist in delivering babies. The range of skills and experiences is limited only by your imagination. Health care offers a variety of positions that appeal to almost all working styles, personalities and interests. As long as you like helping people, this field is for you. Join an In-Demand Field According the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the health care industry has more than 13 million jobs. Opportunities for health care professionals in a number of fields are booming due to advances in medicine, the country s aging population and expansion of health care services. Make a Difference in People s Lives Perhaps the biggest benefit of being a health care professional is that you will make a difference in people s lives. Every decision in the health care field directly affects patients and those who love them. You could help bring a new life into the world or save a life. Your work in direct patient care, support care or in the diagnostic area can change lives, impacting families the way only health care professionals are able to. Not only will you have an impact on individuals, you could also make an impact on entire communities, providing health care and services in a variety of forms. Earn a Good Salary Due to the high demand for workers in the health care industry, careers in health care offer competitive wages. The more highly skilled you are, the higher your pay will be. If you wish to obtain salary information, please visit and search for the career that interests you. Have a Clear Path to Advancement It costs employers less to promote a trusted worker than to hire someone new. Some employers will reimburse educational expenses so you can qualify for a higher-paying position. Several organizations run career ladder programs that help accelerate employee advancement. Many health care careers offer additional credentials that allow you to move up the career ladder or specialize in areas that interest you. 4
