Web applications update Current status, recent developments and future plans Cihan Sahin On behalf of Web development team cihan.sahin@ecmwf.int ECMWF June 7, 2016

Web applications ECMWF has a suite of web applications to explore, display and download a wide range of data it produces. eccharts (eccharts.ecmwf.int/forecaster) www Charts (www.ecmwf.int) Web API October 29, 2014 2

eccharts eccharts is an interactive web based service to explore and visualise ECMWF graphical forecast products. Main interfaces to access charts; Web interface (forecaster/ dashboard) Web Map Service (WMS) interface Update procedures: Code updates are continuous (Bug fixes, continuous improvement of web infrastructure) Content updates are done twice a year based on user requests (June/November) 3

eccharts - Status 250,290 fields are pushed per forecast cycle (~ 1.21 TB). (~ 4 times bigger after model upgrade) Same level of data availability as in dissemination service. Contains around 230 parameters that users can overlay and create personalized products. Access limited to Member and Cooperating states and Commercial customers. Access to service is controlled/given by Computing representatives in MS/CS. 4

eccharts Updates June-2015 High resolution forecast (HRES): Bulk wind shear (compute from levels), Precipitation type, Precipitation rate (total precipitation, convective, stratiform, total snowfall), 1000 hpa relative humidity Ensemble forecast: Shift of tails (SOTs) Air quality data (provided by Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service CAMS) Total aerosol optical depth, Dust aerosol optical depth, Carbon monoxide, Ozone at surface 5

eccharts Updates December 2015 Dedicated to new IFS cycle upgrade (e-suite cycle 41r2) All e-suite data/charts made available for 3 months until implementation date. Operational layers were duplicated for e-suite to overlay/compare with operational data. Meteograms from e-suite were available on Meteogram page on www. 6

eccharts Upcoming update Implementation of new parameters (~20) (end of May) as requested by users; Thickness, SST, Visibility, Albedo, Leaf area index Simulated satellite data Probability of precipitation rates, visibility EFI CAPE and CAPE-SHEAR Named tropical cyclone tracks Weighted probabilities Some additional CAMS layers Full list available at; https://software.ecmwf.int/wiki/display/ec CHARTS/ecCharts+updates+-+2016 7

eccharts - WMS interface Web Map Service (WMS) provides computer-to-computer access to eccharts layers. The layers from eccharts are made available to GIS clients following WMS standards. WMS access is controlled by tokens. WMS service is useful to integrate eccharts layers to your workstation applications Used by some Member States (DWD, Meteo-France, ) to integrate eccharts layers into their applications. We cooperate with OGC MetOcean group to ensure interoperability. It also enables us to support various projects Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) 8

eccharts WMS update Current default version is 1.1.1 WMS version 1.3.0 is currently under test Default version change; Version 1.3.0 provided in a different URL as default version for users to test. Default version change will follow after external user tests. Link below contains a document comparing version 1.1.1 to 1.3.0 A new projection (EPSG3857, compatible with Google maps) is under test. More information about WMS: https://software.ecmwf.int/wiki/display/ecchart S/ecCharts-WMS 9

eccharts Future plans Adding more parameters based on user requests More Meteogram parameters Extra-tropical cyclone feature tracks (Fronts ) Model climate parameters, ensemble clustering More requests to arrive in User s meeting (UEF 2016) River discharge data (from EFAS) Provide IFS cycle upgrades (e-suites) when available Next content update is in November 2016. 10

www Charts Static web charts as they appear on www. Status Currently around 1 million charts available on www. Content migration from old web site completed in December. Planned features are in operational use Chart dashboard Chart download facility Interactive charts 11

Charts dashboard Organise multiple charts and meteograms in the same page. It provides a personalized access point to charts and meteograms. Access to chart dashboard Add chart to dashboard https://software.ecmwf.int/wiki/display/fcst/chart+dashboard October 29, 2014 12

Chart download Chart permalink that can be used to download charts automatically. URL for batch access to this chart wget https://apps.ecmwf.int/plots/product-download/medium/w_t2m30mw/?time=2016051100,0,2016051100&area=europe &token=811ec6095707909a4ba36350858c9b8f&email=cihan.sahin@ecmwf.int O chart.png October 29, 2014 13

Interactive charts New generation of charts that are generated from eccharts system. Access to meteograms by clicking on charts. Many advantages on production/maintenance/look & feel. October 29, 2014 14

www Charts - Future plans Producing more of medium range static charts as interactive charts Reduce production issues, same look and feel, quick response to user requests, more features (click and produce meteograms), Adding new products as interactive charts. 15

Web API Provides discovery/download of data via web protocols through web and batch (API). Access to MARS (batch only) Access to public datasets (web and batch) New datasets are available S2S reforecast ERA20C monthly means/observation feedback CAMS global fire assimilation system More datasets in progress: CERA20C ERA20C Land 16

Web API usage 17

Highlights Migration of charts/applications completed in December. More chart features in place: Chart dashboard, chart download facility, interactive charts E-suite (cycle 41r2) was available in eccharts. Content updates to eccharts. Web API steady increase on number of users and requests and addition of more datasets. Overall improvements on continuous integration/statistics/monitoring and testing. 18

Thanks & Questions? Stephan to demonstrate eccharts WMS service 19
