3 An operational dashboard is designed to give executive level staff an immediate view of the day to day operations of your organisation. It can provide insight into the status of a project, or up to date information of how an organisation is tracking against key performance indicators. The purpose is to provide the latest information to decision makers so that they have it at their fingertips when they needs it. And can respond appropriately to unfolding situations. So, the intended audience is not the GIS specialist. In fact it should not require any special skills to use. There s no need for the user to know how the data gets there, but wants to access executive level summaries and analysis and be notified when something noteworthy happens. GIS Analysts are very good at using the ArcGIS Desktop tools for extracting information from data. And I m sure there are plenty of people in this room who are required to create regular reports on operational performance. I have certainly done a lot of this type of reporting in previous jobs. I created pdfs, and excel spreadsheets with charts and graphs. They were all static products, and updated monthly or less frequently. On the other hand, as an integrated part of the ArcGIS platform, The Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS consumes web services, so this means that the dashboard updates when the 3

4 data updates. The analyst will continue to create and manage and analyse data, but the results are made immediately available, rather two weeks after the reporting period ends. This opens up the possibility to provide real time/near real time information, depending on your data sources and the timeframes in schedule in which it is update. But it s not only easy to look at and understand. It is easy to use and configure. And over the next half an hour or so, Christopher and I will show you how you can create and configure a new dashboard, creating a very slick and effective produce, without writing any code. There is a lot of capability provided out of the box. 3

5 Accessible via a Windows or browser application. The option to view the through a browser opens your dashboard up to other operating systems and to mobile devices, such as tablets (ios, android etc). The Windows application can be downloaded from ArcGIS Online. This is a free download. The Operations Dashboard integrates with your ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS accounts. So your published services can be consumed as inputs into the Operations Dashboard. A dashboard view is based on a WebMap that is created in your WebGIS portal account. You can then use that map as a basis for the dashboard view, and then start adding: data from external sources and widgets Before we jump into hands on part of the demo, let s look at some examples of existing dashboards and the types of information that you can share. *Switch to Operations Dashboard This is the sign in screen, where I would usually connect to my AGOL or Portal account. But what I will do, and you can do this yourself, without having AGOL or Portal, is click on Try It. 4

6 *Click on Try It This will open up some samples that you can have a look at. These are read only, but you can get some ideas about how you can configure the app to suit your data and information requirements. *Open the Customer Information (Water Utilities) *Open the Casco Ferries Dashboard *If time permits open the Op Organic Dashboard. 4

7 So what we intend to go through over the next 30 minutes are some best practices for creating dashboard views using Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS First we ll look at creating the WebMap including the data prep for giving best results. We ll run through adding services to a web map and optimising those services for use in our dashboard. The next step will be to download Operations Dashboard (if you don t already have it installed), and sign in to your ArcGIS Online / Portal account so that you can access all the WebMaps and services you have published. Then we are ready to start building the dashboard. We ll have a look at different configuration options, depending on the screen real estate you have available. We ll also talk about the difference between dynamic and static layers in your Dashboard view. Once that foundation is in place, we can start to add additional services to further enrich the information contained within the web map. Finally we will look at adding and configuring widgets, both out of the box and 5

8 custom widgets that have been created by ArcGIS users. These are the tools that are configured to present the information that is important to you, at a glance. *Hand over to Christopher to start with the web map building. 5

Gary has been tasked with X and has to create new datasets for his field technicians to be able to collect data in an area that is known to have sketchy mobile phone coverage. With this in mind Gary intends to create some web maps that will allow the Field Technicians to concentrate on collecting data without having to worry about being under a tree or on top of a hill. For this he ll need offline editing. This is Frank. Frank is an horticulturist with little knowledge in GIS and even less interest. All Frank wants is something for him to easily and intuitively collect data in the field. His interest is in the trees and accurately getting his job done in a timely manner. So lets look at how Gary, the GIS expert, can create a map and data collection tool for Frank to do the task he is the expert in. 6
