1 QStar Network Migrator - Storage Reporter About The QStar Storage Reporter (QSR) is a powerful tool based on QStar Network Migrator product. QSR helps organisations make more informed decisions for storage investments and storage utilisation, by executing a complete professional analysis of their storage infrastructure. The reporting software does not require installation on production servers, but can be installed on a networked workstation, using Windows platform. The desired storage resources can be targeted and file usage analyzed transparent to users, without workflow disruption. Once analysis is complete, results can be displayed graphically or non-graphically, profiling storage volume usage on the basis of File Access, File Size, File Type, File Owner, and Storage Utilisation. Installation and Configuration QSR can be provided as an ISO download or delivered on a QStar QSR CD/DVD. The product is free to use and requires no licensing. This guide is intended for Resellers already familiar with the QNM product to be able to install this reporting tool and gather reports on behalf of a client. It is recommended that QSR be installed on a Workstation using a Windows platform without an existing installed database application, it is not necessary to be installed on a Windows Server platform. It is also recommended that it be removed once analysis is complete. The product can be installed on Windows XP/7/2003/2008/2012 and should have a minimum of 2GB RAM and 1GB of storage per million files to be reported. The default recommended installation is to implement the PostgreSQL Database on the local system. QStar support other databases for the full product, for the reporting capability the default PostgreSQL should be selected. The CD/DVD will autorun and prompt for the default installation of the PostgreSQL Database on the local system:

2 Select Yes to install the PostgreSQL Database, the set-up procedure will typically take a few minutes to complete. Once completed, a new window will open reporting the DB was not found, select Start to create a new database. Once completed, the QNM Engine will start automatically and the WebGUI will also start automatically. If it does not, then this is probably due to no Default Browser being set. To rectify this either set a Default Browser and again select the Console button, or manually type the URL into a web browser: or Whilst working with the product the QNM Console should be left open, to exit Close should be selected. There will be a prompt to Confirm or Cancel.

3 To exit and clear the configuration and Database, select Uninstall. The user will be prompted to Confirm or Cancel. Once the WebGUI has started, then the data required to be scanned should be mapped as a drive letter to this Workstation/Server. Selecting the Agent Source Management/Agent Configuration will display the hostname as the Agent. Selecting the local agent by clicking on the agent name will display it in the Agent Management

4 Select Modify and from here, the paths can be selected for the agent to manage. Once the required paths to scan have been completed and saved, select Back and then select Scan The progress status will alter periodically, once complete the Last Scanned status will change from Not scanned yet to the last scanned date/time.

5 Running Reports Key report formats are conveniently pre-configured and results can be displayed graphically or non-graphically (table format). Custom reports can also be created, as needed. Reports provide analysis of dates, capacity size and overall percentage based on File Access, File Size, File Type or File Owner, Storage Utilization. There is a full explanation of Reports in the QNM manual. Any report can be exported as a txt or xml file, by selecting the Export button. Once exported, the file can be opened using MS Excel application.

7 Running Simulated Reports Running Simulated Reports is a way of determining how the storage would look after a migration has taken place, in order to create a Simulated Report a Policy will need to be created. There is a full explanation of Reports and Simulated Reports in the QNM manual. Here is an example policy which is then applied to a Simulated Report. Select the Policy Builder to create the required policy based on criteria such as Create time, Mod. Time, etc. The example below is to Migrate and stub any files older than 6 months:

8 Once complete select the Add button. Now a Policy is defined it can be used to create a Simulated Report. In the Agent Configuration select the required agent and the option Execute Simulation A new Simulate Name can be added with the required Path Tree

9 From this various Simulated Reports can be generated. If required additional reports can be generated by repeating this procedure.
