Studying a research program at USQ has been great. The faculty acknowledges the importance of research students to the university, and academic staff are very supportive of our goals and career objectives. My supervisors and other staff are always there for help and a friendly chat, and I really appreciate their mentoring of early career researchers such as myself. I am confident that I made the right choice with staying at USQ for my postgraduate study. MARK EMMERSON DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (HISTORY)

Duration Mode of study Campus Entry requirements Juris Doctor 3 years full-time, up to 6 years part-time On-campus, distance education Toowoomba, Springfield Approved 3-year bachelor degree or equivalent The Juris Doctor is a graduate-entry program (for non-law graduates) that provides you with the opportunity for a comprehensive study of law, not only to prepare for practice as a solicitor or barrister in Queensland, but also to examine the legal process and its social, political and economic context. The program aims to equip you with an academic qualification for professional practice. While this is a focused program preparing you for professional practice with particular skills in applied legal research, it also builds the special capabilities that a legal education can offer, such as complex problem-solving and policy analysis. NOTE This qualification does not entitle graduates to use the title Doctor. Professional accreditation The Juris Doctor has been accredited by the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board, Queensland, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland as an approved academic qualification under the Supreme Court (Legal Practitioner Admission) Rules 2004 (Qld). This will partially satisfy the requirements to practise as a solicitor or barrister in Queensland, or as a legal practitioner elsewhere in Australia. Intending solicitors and barristers must also complete an approved practical legal training course in order to become admitted to practice. USQ Law graduates have the option of completing their practical legal training through a one-year traineeship in a law practice, or through a practical legal program offered by USQ s preferred provider or another institution that offers a practical legal training qualification. Duration Mode of study Entry requirements Alternative entry Program articulation Master of Learning and Development 1 year full-time, up to 5 years part-time Online 3-year bachelor degree or equivalent Students who do not meet the requirements for normal entry may apply for alternative entry if they believe they can demonstrate that they have qualifications and/or experience that might be considered equivalent to those required for normal entry From: Postgraduate Certificate in Learning & Development; Postgraduate Certificate in Education; Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics This program is designed for those wishing to respond to emerging educator roles and opportunities brought about by changes in workplaces and communities. Within such an environment, individuals shape personally relevant study from formal and informal programs. A central tenet in the Master of Learning and Development is your cultivation of a critical and reflective approach to the literature and its inherent conceptual frameworks. The program therefore keeps pace with the rapidly changing education environment and the educator s expanding and evolving role. You will be able to customise your study by selecting courses from other faculties as part of their learner-designed program. This flexibility encourages you to focus on specific areas based on your personal and professional needs, industry requirements and future career aspirations, and is ideally suited for you if you are from a non-traditional educational setting which does not require teacher registration. NOTE This program does not in itself qualify graduates for teacher registration with relevant teaching authorities. To qualify for teacher registration in Queensland, please refer to the Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching program. Professional experience Some Faculty of Education courses have a professional experience component. Under the terms of the Commission for Children and Young People Act (Qld 2000), students undertaking professional experience are considered to be volunteers engaged in regulated employment. As such, all students working with children must apply to the Commission to be issued with a notice that they are suitable to work in child-related employment. As part of this application, the student must consent to the Commission conducting a criminal history check as the key element of the process of determining suitability. All applications for a suitability notice must be made at the local campus of the University at the commencement of their program. For further information, visit the Commission s website at www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au/employment Students undertaking professional experience outside of Queensland will need to check the requirements for professional experience in their state or country. What does university study cost? There are two main costs incurred for university study: program fees and textbook purchase. Program fees There are a limited number of Commonwealth supported places available for Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens (resident in Australia) and Australian permanent residents (resident in Australia). Students are required to pay the Student Contribution Amount associated with these places. The Student Contribution Amount is charged per course/ per semester. Additional places which are not supported by the Australian Government may be available; however, these places will incur full tuition fees. Fee assistance for postgraduate study The Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) is a package of loans available to help students pay their Student Contribution Amount or full tuition. It includes: FEE-HELP for eligible students paying full tuition fees HECS-HELP for Student Contribution Amount. FEE-HELP for direct postgraduate tuition fees Under the FEE-HELP program, Australian citizens and students holding permanent humanitarian visas are eligible to receive a loan of up to a Government-determined balance to help pay postgraduate tuition fees. The loan allows them to defer payment of postgraduate tuition fees and to commence repayment via the tax system when their income reaches a certain level. New Zealand citizens and other permanent resident visa holders are not eligible for FEE-HELP, and must pay their postgraduate tuition fees upfront each semester. HECS-HELP for Student Contribution Amount In a few postgraduate programs at USQ, Commonwealth supported places may be offered. Commonwealth supported students are required to pay the Student Contribution Amount associated with these places. USQ s 2012 Student Contribution Amount rates can be found at: www.usq.edu.au/fees Tuition/direct fees for postgraduate study Tuition/direct fees will vary for each course, but are the same, regardless of whether courses are studied on-campus, offcampus via distance education or online. The following table shows estimates for tuition/direct fees for single-unit courses. Fees will vary for courses that are worth more than one credit point. Fees for research courses may be higher. Current fee information is available from the course feefinder, which you can find at: www.usq.edu.au/fees International students If you are not an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa, you are required to pay international student fees. The USQ Story The people of the Toowoomba region founded the University in 1967 out of their passion to provide the best possible educational opportunities for local students. Like the mythological phoenix rising from the ashes, USQ has transformed into an internationally recognised University. No longer only inspiring local students, USQ has actively removed the barriers to learning for people in all corners of the world. The story of the phoenix is captured in our motto Per Studia Mens Nova meaning Through study the mind is renewed, which also mirrors the transformation process of our students as they rise up to fulfil their potential through their learning journey with us. USQ s purpose is to continue to inspire this transformation in the lives of generations to come; empowering our students to fulfil their personal and career goals through study.
