Fact Sheet for Bachelor of Applied Management TAFE Queensland Brisbane (TQB) has a formal partnership with Federation University Australia (formerly the University of Ballarat) to deliver the unique and innovative Bachelor of Applied Management (BAM) in Queensland, starting with courses delivered at our centrally-located South Bank campus. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) This FAQ sheet is designed to assist with general enquiries, but further information can be obtained by contacting the Course Coordinator, Val Elshani (07) , or ing [email protected]. Additional information can be found at Q. What is the duration of the program? Experienced professionals with a Diploma and Advanced Diploma (or the equivalent), in an approved study area, can finish the Bachelor of Applied Management in one Academic Year of flexible study (approximately 12 months). If you have completed your Diploma and Advanced Diploma then you are probably already two-thirds through a Bachelor Degree! The full Bachelor of Applied Management is a three-year degree program. Previous studies containing some management content (University, Diploma and Advanced Diploma) and relevant industry experience (two+ years documented professional experience) can be academically assessed and, subsequently deemed equivalent to, Years 1 and 2 of the degree program. If you can satisfy the academic entry criteria (either through previous studies, deemed equivalency, or RPL), combined with the required professional experience, you will then only need to successfully complete the 3 rd year of studies with us to attain the full degree. Q. How will the program be delivered? The 3 rd year of the Bachelor of Applied Management is delivered in a flexible learning format using a combination of face-to-face workshops, online learning/lectures and directed activities/forums. Each course includes 36 hours of specific instruction, comprising of 12 hours of workshops (delivered in two-to-three hour interactive modules), 12 hours of online lectures and, 12 hours of directed activities. (Note that both TAFE Queensland Brisbane and Federation University Australia refer to a unit or subject as a course, and refers to a degree or course of study as a Program ). Q. Where will the program be delivered? The Bachelor of Applied Management degree is to be delivered at the TAFE Queensland Brisbane s central South Bank Campus (Brisbane). Depending on the number of courses being offered in any Semester, workshops can be either two or three hour durations, over four-to-six individual workshops. These workshops are usually on Wednesday evenings, and may include an occasional Saturday. In Semester , students will attend six workshops on selected alternative Wednesday evenings (6:00 8:00 pm) for each of the two courses being offered, with the first workshop starting on 4 th March.
Q. What courses (units) does the program comprise of? The Bachelor of Applied Management comprises of eight (8) core courses (units): Project Management Marketing for Managers Strategic Human Resources Management App. Principles for Responsible Bus Practice Accounting For Managers International Business Mgt. Entrepreneurship Applied Workplace Practice Q. What is the proposed timetable for 2015/16? The 2015/16 Academic Year runs from 23 rd February 2015 to 27 th February The final year of the degree is delivered over a three Semester per Academic Year timetable for students. This program offers a flexible delivery which maximises study opportunities while maintaining a work-life balance. Teaching and learning focuses on integrated interactive workshops which will facilitate peer learning promoting both students and lecturers to share ideas and experiences with one another. Online learning resources will support the additional reading, knowledge tests, reflective learning questions and case studies that form part of each course. Orientation will be held in the first week (0 Week) of any Semester, with workshops commencing the following week. Workshops for Semester 1 begin 4 th March Q. Are the courses delivered sequentially, and/or in what order? Delivery of the Bachelor of Applied Management degree courses (units/subjects) will vary each Semester, but are scheduled, linked and rotated in such a way as to offer the opportunity to complete one-year of studies (8 courses) within three Semesters. Students will have the option of studying two or three courses each Semester, with the capstone Applied Workplace Practice course generally offered every Semester. Q. What courses are being offered this Academic Year (2015), and when? Semester 1 Semester 2 Semester 3 _ Project Management Entrepreneurship Strategic Human Resource Mgt. Marketing for Managers Accounting for Managers Applied Principles for Responsible International Business Mgt. Business Practice Note: Applied Workplace Practice course generally offered every Semester. Q. How will the courses be assessed? In general, assessments are divided into three-to-four components: There will be two-to-three report-style assessments for each course (independent and/or group), and a qualifying final examination at the end of the Semester. Q. Are study hours are expected outside of workshops and online activities? Yes. Generally you can expect to spend 4 8 hours per week on each course s activities, depending upon what is being covered at the time. Preparing for your assessments may require additional study time. (Note: Work-life-study balance is possible.) Q. If my life situation changes, can I slow down and/or extend my studies? Yes. There are only two courses which are strictly structured in the Bachelor of Applied Management: Project Management must be completed prior to taking Applied Workplace Practice, with Applied Workplace Practice intended to be taken in your last Semester of study. It is not guaranteed that every course will be offered in every Semester in an Academic Year, but missing a specific course s rotation should only mean deferring studies for a limited period until it appears again. It should be noted, however, that the Program may change over time and you may have to adjust your studies accordingly.
Q. Can I complete the program without attending class? As the classes are focused around industry learning from industry, not attending the limited number of workshops involved would severely limit the effectiveness of your studies. This program is delivered using a blended learning model which includes 12 hours of workshop delivery, 12 hours of online delivery, and 12 hours of self-directed learning per Semester, for each course. This blended delivery is designed so you can optimise study while maintaining a realistic work-life-study balance. The workshops are aimed at assisting students to apply the knowledge within their work environment, and provide a forum to share ideas and experiences with peers. These workshops are scheduled for Wednesday evenings (6:00-9:00 pm) and on limited number of Saturdays (9:00 am - 4:00 pm) in 2015 (times, days and number of workshops dependent upon Semester). Students can have access to library resources and lecturers prior to workshops (Upon notification/appointment). Q. Are there any full-time places available? Yes. In the Bachelor of Applied Management, full-time studies are subjective as the applied focus of the program means that the normal professional activities you usually engage in have relevance and form an integral part of the degree. The degree is specifically structured for students who already have work-life commitments and, accelerates your study opportunities by combining previous, existing and ongoing experience with structured foundational studies. Q. Are there any part-time places available? Yes. The degree is specifically structured for non-fulltime students. The Semester timetable has been designed to allow students to complete their studies and the degree in one Academic Year, but students may opt to extend this period (some conditions apply). Q. What happens if I don t have a Diploma or Advanced Diploma? Admission to the 3 rd year of this degree requires you to have satisfactorily completed either two years of relevant university studies and/or (in combination of) a VET Diploma and an Advanced Diploma (or their equivalents) in a relevant discipline (e.g. Business, Management, Project Management, etc.). Additionally, you must have a minimum of two years of relevant industry experience in an appropriate professional field. The Course Coordinator at the TQB School of Business will be able to determine if you have the appropriate prerequisite qualifications and experience. If necessary, TAFE Queensland Brisbane can help you meet the program s admission requirements via a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or skills recognition process and may also offer an accelerated Diploma/Advanced Diploma study option for eligible individuals (Fees apply). Arrangements should be made (and admission requirements completed) prior to start of the Semester, and prior to enrolment. Your professional experience and educational background can contribute to the recognition of TAFE qualifications, but you should apply for RPL before you enrol in courses in the Bachelor of Applied Management program, and you must complete all requirements prior to completing the degree. Only students who have completed all requirements will be permitted to enrol in the Applied Workplace Project course.
Q. Can I study individual courses/subjects prior to getting approval or fully completing the Advanced Diploma? Yes. You can enrol as a non-award student into most courses being delivered. Each course completed, and passed, would receive full credit if later if you are able to articulate into the program, but degrees will not be granted to those not enrolled in the BAM program you must be enrolled in the BAM to receive it. Q. I want to enrol and I have some prior studies and professional experience, but not an Advanced Diploma qualification. Can I take some 3 rd Year BAM courses while I earn my Advanced Diploma? Yes. While students are encouraged to previously complete all the proscribed entry requirements for the Program and, should have sufficient prior professional experience, some prospective students may conditionally be permitted to enrol into individual courses as a non-award student. Each course completed, and passed, would receive full credit if later on they are able to articulate into the Program. Students must formally enter the Program to be able to qualify for the degree prior to completing all the required courses, as the Degree cannot be granted retrospectively. The Course Coordinator will be able to advise you of entry conditions and restrictions. Q. Can I apply for credit into this program? As you are going directly into the 3 rd year of the Bachelor of Applied Management, you already have. The applied degree program is a three year degree. The Diploma and Advanced Diploma are deemed to be equivalent to Years 1 and 2 and this is the maximum credit available (no further credit is granted for any of the 3 rd year courses). If you are wishing to transfer in credit from prior university studies, normal academic transfer arrangements apply and certified copies of Academic Transcripts will be required for review at Application. In addition to the necessary industry experience, you will be required to have at least two years equivalency of prior academic studies (plus industry experience) or a combination of previous professional experience, prior academic studies and Diploma/Advanced Diploma (or the approved equivalency) for consideration. Entry is presently into the 3 rd year of study only. Q. How do I apply?* Application is easy and simple: To apply you will be required to: 1. Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa. 2. Provide evidence (a transcript) of completion of a Diploma and Advanced Diploma in an appropriate field; and/or provide evidence of prior academic/university studies. 3. Apply directly online or complete a Higher Education Direct Application form, and forward the completed application form to the TAFE Queensland Brisbane (School of Business) at [email protected] For a copy of the current Application form please go to 4. Provide a portfolio of current and previous work and professional experience (Resume/CV). Experience can be paid or voluntary, but should represent a minimum of two years of supervisory/management/professional experience. This will be provided with the Direct Application form. *This information relates to domestic students only and special conditions and/or fees may apply to nonresident students currently in Australia under an Employment or family sponsorship residency status (e.g. 457 Visa holders can participate in the BAM under some conditions, but are subject to full fees).
Q. How do I know I have been accepted into the program? If your application is successful you will be sent a Letter of Offer inviting you to enrol into the program. Enrolment is to be completed entirely online, at your convenience, although there will be the opportunity to enrol during the Orientation Week period. Q. When do I enrol into program? After applying, the Letter of Offer will contain information on how to enrol online, prior to commencing studies. Q. What fees will I pay for this program if I receive an offer to a Commonwealth Supported Place (C.S.P.)? If you are offered a Commonwealth Supported Place the current (2015) program fees are $1, per course for students (based on $10, for one year of full-time study). These fees are set by the Federal Government. The Federal Government requires you to make a financial contribution to each course of study you undertake. Alternatively, if a Commonwealth Supported Place is not available, then the fees for one Academic Year of full-time study will approximately be $12, for 2015/2016 ($1, per course) for domestic students. (Note: Program fees are subject to change upon notice) Q. How do I pay for my fees? Payments are made directly to Federation University Australia. An enrolment is only confirmed when the appropriate enrolment documents are completed online, approved and lodged on the specified dates. Students will be issued with an invoice to their student address after enrolment, and this must be paid by the specified date. You may also locate a copy of your invoice within Federation University Australia s My Student Centre. Fees can be paid by using any of the following payment systems: BPay, bank deposit, credit card, cheque, and money order. HECS-HELP (C.S.P.) HECS-HELP assistance helps eligible students enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place with a loan to cover their student contribution amount. For more information go to: Q. Will I have to purchase textbooks for this program? There will be approximately five to seven textbooks required for the entire 3 rd year of this program and they will cover all eight (8) courses (units). The estimated total cost of these textbooks will be around $1,000 for the entire program. (Be certain to keep all recepts for tax purposes). There will be no additional learning materials fees charged for this program. You are able to access online resources through Federation University Australia. A range of library and study support resources are available from TAFE Queensland Brisbane s modern Library and Resource Centre, situated in C Block at our South Bank, Brisbane campus. You must get a TQB Student ID Card to access services. Q. Who issues me with my Bachelor of Applied Management degree? After successful completion of all of the requirements of the Bachelor of Applied Management, you graduate with a degree that is issued by Federation University Australia, and is recognised worldwide.
Q. Can I go on to additional studies after I finish my Bachelor of Applied Management degree? Yes. The BAM is a fully accredited higher education degree and you can use the degree as a stepping stone to further postgraduate studies Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters-level study.ultimately on to PhD/Doctoral studies.
