Over het IJ Festival is in collaboration with Europe by People/ FabCity looking for ten (international) theatre makers for the Over het IJ Sea Container Project, which will take place at Kop Java-island in May/June and in July at the NDSM-wharf during Over het IJ Festival 2016 (8-17 July). Dear student or recently graduated theatre maker of any (international) artschool, Over het IJ Festival has started the selection process for a special edition of the successful Sea Container Project, which the festival yearly produces over more than ten years. The Sea Container Project is the playground of the festival, from where many young theatre makers have started their careers within the festival or within the theatre field in general. The Project is an invitation to practise working site specific and to show your work to a critical, but open minded and enthusiastic audience, that adds to the development of your artistic work. In Spring the festival will organize a special international edition of the project in collaboration with Europe by People / FabCity at Kop Java-island. FABCITY During the Netherlands Presidency of the Council of the European Union, from April onwards, a remarkable society will arise on Kop Java-Island in the river IJ, named FabCity. It will be inhabited by young students, professionals and artists, creating a self sustaining city in which they will work, create, learn, build, perform, research, and show possible solutions to universal problems in everyday living. They will create new social, economical, logistical and political systems. Over het IJ Festival connects their Seacontainer village to FabCity and asks theatre makers to develop a Sea Container performance on the site in collaboration with and inspired by all temporary inhabitants and visitors of FabCity. During FabCity the performances will be created and developed, during the weekends open for the audience as an open lab. The audience is invited to join the process and to share their ideas with the theatre makers. During Over het IJ Festival the Seacontainer Village will be replaced to the NDSM-wharf and the at Java-island created performances will become a part of the festival programme. All graduate students and theatre makers of 2016 and all who graduated in the years 2014 or 2015 from artschools in The Netherland, Europe or anywhere else in the world, are invited to apply for this special project. From all the applications the artistic team of the festival will choose 10 theatre makers to join the programme.

OVER HET IJ FESTIVAL With a unique contemporary programme and mingled audience is Over het IJ Festival the site specific theatre festival of Amsterdam. The city and all connected stories, questions and developments are the starting point of the festival programme, presenting work of theatre makers with a connection to urban themes. The festival takes place every summer at the NDSM-wharf, the shores of the Amsterdam river IJ and the neighbourhoods of the North part of the city, but also other parts of the city can become involved as playground and inspirational source. The performances of the theatre makers, presented at and often also developed for a specific site, create a unique festival, in which the connection with the city and the inhabitants will be expressed on a specific way. The festival is known for the possibilities it gives to young theatre makers to develop site specific work. Collaborations between emerging and arrived theatre makers create a fresh and innovative programme, in which the artists can experience in developing a new way of creating theatre in connection tot our lives and surroundings. How to apply for the Seacontainer Programma 2016? THEME We invite graduates or recently graduated theatre makers to develop in two phases a mini site specific theatre performance, with or within a seacontainer. Starting point will be the following theme: The (European) City of tomorrow Cities are the future. Collection centres for people and production, knowledge and creativity, problems and progression. This is where (sh)it happens, and where it will happen in the near future. Predictions are within 35 years, more than 75% of the world population will be living in cities. This is exactly the reason why FabCity has been set up as part of Europe by People, the Amsterdam EU2016 Arts & Design programme. Inspired by the Fab City initiative that started in Barcelona two years ago. From the 11th of April till the 26th of June, FabCity will be a temporary living lab on Kop Java island in Amsterdam. Even better, a campus for and full of people that want to be part of sustainable and local solutions for our global urban problems. Problems of which everyone politicians, scientists and citizens acknowledges the urgent need for collective action. We have exhausted the resources of our planet, and gaps between races, genders, classes and religions continue to exist and even grow. At the same time, we are developing new technologies, means of communication, transport and forms of producing energy and food. Our urban environments are complex, manmade systems, bringing out the best and worst of human beings.

Problems are magnified in cities, the pressure cookers of our society. FabCity, a campus for urban innovators, is also a pressure cooker, where in a confined space and in a confined amount of time, a creative and innovative force of young people the rulers of tomorrow co-create examples of how things can and should be. An interconnected, hyper connected and self-sufficient society, built by and on people. Investigating our everyday basic human needs: energy, food, housing, healthcare, education, privacy and human interaction. Using what is locally available; from produce to knowledge, technology and creativity. FabCity is about collecting and sharing data and information, learning from each other, creating a community in which we are all connected, both digitally and spiritually. It not just about developing the new it is also about showcasing what is already there. All over the world and in the Netherlands, solutions already exist. Local companies are finding and producing new raw materials through recycling. Individuals are thinking up solutions for our housing problems, creatively avoiding red tape. Small co-operations are creating new ways for producing and distributing food making us healthier and happier. The new citizens of our cities aim to be more than just consumers who eat, drink, work, party, produce waste and shop. They want to be creators, producers, constructors and conservers. They re building our new cities by transforming and upgrading infrastructure, changing the way we move around, redesigning and renewing neighbourhoods, public spaces and the way we live and interact, inventing ways of saving and producing energy. They give us hope. People want to take responsibility for their environment, for their own and other s well-being, for our next generation, for our planet s existence. They can not and will not wait for our governments to implement solutions people want to be part of the solution. Solutions that are often as simple as they are genius, stemming from an urgent and human need and applied on a human scale. A scale people and not just Europeans can relate to. Over het IJ Festival challenges the artists of the Sea container project to give the audience a new (theatrical) view on the contemporary city and of the possible future European City, but most of all of their desired city. Within FabCity Over het IJ Festival gives space to artists of the Sea container project to develop their vision on their role in society, their position in our constant changing cities and their European city of tomorrow. What can an artists change or cause, in an artistic way, but also social, economical or political? What can an artist add tot the connection between city, inhabitants and art, are important questions that will be included in and part of their research. Artists can reflect on reality, change perspectives and renew ideas and visions about our urban questions.

At FabCity the artists will be asked to loose the old systems and to look for new solutions, new connections in close collaboration with the scientists and developers, who are all temporary working at FabCity within the areas of data&media, art&theatre, energy&off grid, water, food&green, digital fabrication, mobilty and transportation. The artists of the Sea container project are asked to relate themselves to these themes. Next to this students of Hogeschool van Amsterdam will work at specific cases in which they can collaborate with the artists. THE PROJECT We ask you to take part of the whole trajectory of the project. The project will take place in the period May / June at Kop Java-island and between 8 th and 17 th of July at Over het IJ Festival. After the selection we start the project with a workshop, during one day. During the project you will be coached by an artistic and production team. The next central questions will be continually asked: what is your connection to the theme, how do you communicate to your audience, what will be the form of your performance, with whom do you collaborate? Another important thing is the development in working site-specific: What brings the seacontainer and what does it means for your performance if you bring décor pieces within your space? The most important question is: how do you involve the context of FabCity within your performance and later on the context of the NDSM-wharf? The performance will be developed at FabCity. From the 23 rd of May you will start the theatrical translation of your concept, from that date the audience will take part in your development during the weekends. This gives the possibility to test your work to an audience and to practice new materials. In July you get the change to play your 15 minute performance during Over het IJ Festival, 5 or 6 times a day for about 15 spectators each time. This creates a change to share your performance with a wide audience. GENERAL INFORMATION Every theatre maker will have a personal artistic coach; Simone Hogendijk (dramaturg, artistiek leider Over het IJ Festival), Petra Ardai (theatremaker, Tg Space en artistiek coach a.o. DasArts) and Maurice Bogaert (visual artist, lector at the AHK and artistic coördinator of het Atelier Oerol / Over het IJ Festival). The producer will take care of the practical development and support and during the last phase of the process there will be a technical team available. Every participant will receive a compensation of 1000 euro. There will be some budget for décor, props and technical equipment and eventually travel expenses. Over het IJ Festival will take care of the basic infrastructure, like electricity and a backstage space with water and catering facilities.
