T R A V E L S T U DY M AY 2 0 1 3 PAGE China During May 2013, Dr. Roy Darville of the Department of Biology and Chemistry, led a group of five students on a three week travel-study course to China. The purposes of the course were to: learn about the biology of the giant panda, study various parks and environmental education facilities, gain an understanding of Chinese culture, and to provide ministry opportunities. During the trip the cities of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Ya an, and Beijing were visited. The highlight of the trip was the three days that the class spent working closely with the highly endangered giant pandas at the Bifengxia giant panda center. Students learned how to take care of the pandas and watched the baby pandas play in the panda kindergarten. In Beijing the students visited many cultural sites including the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Great Wall, and the Beijing Opera. The class attended church in Guangzhou and Beijing and built relationships with Chinese college students. The next biology trip to China is scheduled for May 2015. Please contact Dr. Darville if you are interested in going on the trip. 2

P A G E 3 Ecuador The purpose of the class was to compare the community health care programs between Texas and Ecuador. Why did we choose Ecuador? Both Ecuador and Texas have large Hispanic populations and large rural areas. Ecuador has private, social and welfare medicine. Texas has private and welfare medicine and, with Obamacare, will soon have socialized medicine. Our trip schedule was packed with various activities and many different sites. We began our journey by taking a plane from Houston, TX to Miami, FL to Quito, Ecuador. We stayed in Quito and toured different medical facilities May 14-17. The morning of May 18 th we joined with Steven and Carol Thompson of Global Ministries International and traveled to Tena, Ecuador and the Jungle Camp. During our stay at the Jungle camp we conducted 5 health fairs for the children of Compassion International. On May 23 rd we traveled to the Mountain Camp called Chacauco near Patate, Ecuador. There we participated in a children s camp, traveled to Apatug (a Quichua Indian Community) where we conducted a health fair and toured a beautiful town called Banos. We saw a total of 680 people via the health fairs. May 27 th we returned to Quito where we rested and shopped until we dropped. We had several adventures and made lots of new friends. God blessed us every day! T H E S C H O O L O F N A T U R A L A N D S O C I A L S C I E N C E S N E W S L E T T E R

Graduates: Where are they now? After graduating from ETBU in Fall 2010, I pursued a master's in Kinesiology from the University of North Texas and spent two years working as a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion, and Recreation. During this time, I taught various activity classes (i.e., weight-training, Ultimate, and racquetball), and I served as a lab instructor for a health and wellness class. After graduating, I had the opportunity to continue my education at UNT by pursuing a doctoral degree that integrates my interests in psychology and kinesiology. Specifically, I am pursuing a PhD in Educational Research with a concentration in the PsychoSocial Aspects of Sports and Exercise. It is a collaborative degree between the Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion, and Recreation and the Department of Educational Psychology at UNT. It focuses on issues of research methodology, development research, measurement, and statistics through the lens of sport and exercise. Over the past 3 years, I have had the opportunity to present research at several national conferences, and I am currently working on preparing my first manuscript for publication! -Mitch Barton Mitch Barton P A G E 5 Possible Careers in the School of Natural and Social Sciences Psychology Major: Career or vocational counselor, School Psychologist, Counselor, Engineering Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist, Sports Psychologist, Industrial-Organizational Psychologist.
