7 EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION AND PROTOCOL The Office of International Education (OIE) plays a significant role in the University to assist International students. For assistance during emergency situations, we are the main point of contact for both parents and students. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the individuals below in case of an emergency. 9 SERVICES PROVIDED BY OIE We offer parents and family members support to understand University policies and procedures. We also provide critical support in times of emergency. GENERAL ASSISTANCE We assist with general questions or concerns related to academics, immigration status, tuition payments, and health & safety concerns. If there is a necessity, the office will assist families in reaching out to students. We can provide a support letter to the U.S. embassy if you are planning to visit your student to join in their graduation ceremonies. EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE We can help in emergency situations in a variety of ways, such as the following: Can assist as a point of contact for families. Translation services (if needed). Letter of support to the US embassy for emergency visa. Assisting with airport pick-up and arranging accommodations during emergency situations for immediate family.

11 LIFE ON CAMPUS Students at Ferris State University live on a campus that is an open and safe community with valuable services that are available within the campus. Ferris State University has its own police force to maintain safety and security of students and others. The University has its own health care center with physicians, nurses, and counselors to assist when students need health care support. The local hospital is less than a 10-minute walk from campus. Students have access to gyms, exercise centers, swimming pools, and sports facilities on-campus. Students also have access to campus museums, educational centers, and art galleries among other cultural events and activities. The on-campus living comes with excellent dining services that include international cuisines. The International office also provides shuttle services to International students interested in visiting shopping malls in Grand Rapids twice a month.

13 HEALTH CARE AND HEALTH INSURANCE Parents and family members need to be familiar with basic health care information in the US related to their student. Students have access to high quality, basic health care support on-campus. The local hospital, which has access to urgent care and medical specialist services, is a 10-minute walk from campus. All international students are required to have health insurance. The cost of health care insurance per semester is approximately $500 per semester. Ferris State University s preferred provider for student health insurance is HTH worldwide and students are automatically enrolled in this insurance every semester. Students may opt out of this insurance and opt for another provider that meets the University s requirements. To opt out of HTH Insurance, students have to fill necessary forms each semester and obtain approval from the Office of International Education. Students are provided a medical insurance card or policy information. They are required to carry them at all times in case of an emergency.

15 U.S. UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION Undergraduate education at Ferris State University has many components. GENERAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM General Education curriculum is unique to the American university education. General Education is designed to prepare students to be successful in today s diverse and globalized world. This allows students to have a broader understanding of the world. All undergraduate students are required to have approximately 30 credits (varies with major) of general education courses. Students will take classes in writing, communication, and other courses from a wide-variety of disciplines to create a well-rounded college graduates. INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES Many majors require students to gain internship experience as part of their graduation requirements. It is typically required in the third or fourth year of education. MAJOR COURSES Each major requires students to gain depth knowledge in their chosen field of study. Students are required to take several classes in sequence extending four or five semesters in consecutive semesters. Not all major courses are offered every semester. Students must pass courses in sequence in order to graduate in a timely fashion. Students may choose the electives that interest them the most from their program.

17 UNIVERSITY FEES AND PAYMENT OPTIONS The University issues electronic billing statements though student s University account. Students can view their balances and make a payment at any time online through E-bill on their University online web portal (MYFSU). Online payments can be processed with a credit card, electronic bank check, or wire transfer. Students can also make payments in person at the Student Services Office. Students can pay tuition and fees in full at the beginning of the academic semester. Students can also choose a deferred payment plan. Ferris offers 3 payment plans to pay total semester charges. University online web portal (MYFSU). Students who do not make required minimum payments by posted due dates may have their course schedules cancelled, so it is important that your student understands payment procedures and due dates. BUSINESS OPERATIONS FEES A 2.75% convenience fee will be charged on all credit card transactions. There is a 2% late fee added to any past due balances. Your student s classes may be cancelled for non-payment. If their classes are cancelled, there is a $100 late fee to re-register. A fee of $30 will be charged to enroll in a deferred payment plan. 19 EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES WORKING ON CAMPUS? F-1 and J-1 students can work on campus while studying at Ferris State University. During the semester, students can work up to 20 hours a week. During the summer break, students can work up to 40 hours a week on campus. These jobs give students the opportunity to experience working in the United States. WORKING OFF CAMPUS? In general, foreign students are not permitted to work outside the University. For academic training, the US government provides authorization for internship experiences. These experiences can be paid or unpaid by employers. F-1 students can request work authorization to gain practical work experience to sharpen their skills. These are temporary work authorizations for specific periods of time. Work authorization is approved by the US government, primarily, for internship experiences.
