1 MATH & SCIENCE 200 I Street NE Miami, OK [email protected]
2 WELCOME WELCOME Contact Math and Science Cunningham Hall 200 I street NE, Miami, Oklahoma [email protected] All of the science and math classes you enroll in at NEO will be small, with no more than 35 students per class (most being no more than 20.) Classes are taught by full-time teaching faculty, not graduate assistants. You will have access to the instructors whenever you need help. You will also be advised by science and math faculty who understand the requirements for the degree you seek and can give you professional advice on which courses to take and alternative degrees if you change your mind. With the help of your academic advisor, you can complete all the classes you would take at a university, for half the cost. All of our graduates transfer to a university to complete a B.S. degree. Many of them will apply to a professional school such as engineering, pharmacy, physical therapy or optometry after one year at the university. Many will complete a B.S. and then apply to schools of medicine or pharmacology. Some will complete a B.S. degree and enter the workforce. NEO graduates in math and science have been quite successful in being admitted to the professional school of their choice. We have several recent graduates that have become doctors, physical therapists, pharmacists, engineers, optometrists and dental hygienists. Some have become science or math teachers and others have gone on to graduate school. I attended NEO for two years and transferred to OSU in My experiences as a preengineering major at NEO gave me the solid foundation needed for earning my Bachelor s Degree in Mathematics from OSU and my Master s Degree from Pittsburg State. The instructors at NEO presented a great learning atmosphere and were the best instructors I had in all my years in college. I loved NEO so much that I taught there for five years and I still serve as public address announcer for NEO football and basketball. Once a Norseman, always a Norseman and I ll always be a Norseman! 5 PROCESS TECHNOLOGY GO-GO-NEO I like the hands-on, challenging work. I am 20 years old, just graduated from the PTEC program at NEO, making $40,000 a year with no student loan debt, good benefits and a chance to move up in the company. I also have the opportunity to move to other locations around the country or the world because I work for a global company. Process Technology is a good career. LAUREN LINDSEY, Process Operator Ceradyne-a 3M company graduate A process technician monitors and controls mechanical, physical, and/or chemical changes, through many processes, to produce either a final product or an intermediate product, made from raw materials. Workers are found in the oil and gas production/ processing areas, pulp and paper production, food processing, chemical manufacturing, nuclear energy industry, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and other areas where operations of systems require process control. Starting pay ranges from $15.00 an hour to $30.00 per hour. Overtime, experience, and nature of the process can lead to a yearly income of $60, to $120, Very High Demand for operators locally and nationally The process operator-technician is utilized in many industries. The job skills are becoming increasingly diverse and technical in nature while requiring more and more interaction in team environments. 8 PRE-MED Students in the Pre-Med program take basic science and other courses that will satisfy most of the requirements for admission to schools of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, physical therapy, optometry, physicians assistant and others. Graduates transfer to universities and complete the requirements necessary to apply to professional schools. It may require only a few additional courses (as in pharmacy and dentistry) or two years to complete a BS degree before application (the norm for medical school admissions). NEO graduates have been successful in being admitted to schools of pharmacy, medicine, optometry, physical therapy,
9 The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today GO-GO-NEO physicians assistant and others, both in Oklahoma and other states. The specific course requirements vary, depending on which school a student plans to attend after NEO and the professional college they plan to apply to; therefore, an advisor will assist them to assure they select the courses that best fit their needs. Natural Science faculty also advise students who are interested in pursuing other related careers. These include dental hygiene, radiology technologist (x-ray techs), mortuary science, chiropractic, forensics, etc. These students are advised to take courses at NEO that satisfy the requirement for the program in which they plan to apply. I received a great start to my education at NEO. I wasn t sure what I wanted to do so NEO allowed me to try different options before I decided to do Pre-Med. After graduation I attended Pittsburg State University and then Medical School at the University of Kansas. I always felt that I was as well-prepared for upper division courses as my classmates that started at the university as freshmen. At NEO I was also able to be involved in PTK and develop leadership skills. JOEL GRIGSBY, MD Anesthesiology and Cardio-Thoracic Critical Care University of Kansas Medical Center NEO class of 2000

11 PHYSICAL SCIENCE GO-GO-NEO The Physical Science program helps students seeking degrees in chemistry, physics, geology, meteorology, secondary physical science education (teaching chemistry and physics) and other related fields. Graduates transfer to a university to complete a B.S. degree. CAREERS IN PHYSICAL SCIENCE: Biochemist Chemist College Professor Drug Manufacturing Electronics Environmental Scientist Food Researcher Geologist High School Science Teacher Meteorologist Petroleum/Oil Researcher Physicist Solar/Wind Energy Development With the help of my professors in many fields of study, like Chemistry and Mathematics, I was able to perform well and connect with my professors. The professors, and the math lab, worked with me consistently and patiently allowing me to expand my knowledge and gain confidence in my work. I worked hard to accomplish my A.S. in Biology in May 2009, but with my experiences and education at NEO, I have continued on to pursue my Bachelors in Marine Biology at the Florida Institute of Technology.
